  • hey Marlin I know you because you came to my house my likes you

  • we have the same name!

  • @idfkandrew it's incredible!, cause there aren't so many andrews out there...

  • @armando1213

That is pretty cool. I recommend getting a teacher though. They can teach you how to make reeds and guide you as a player.

  • Oh sorry. I thought you were talking to me haha. My advice is to listen to your private teacher and see what they say. I know college bassoon performance majors who play on a Fox 220 or 240 until they go for Grad school.

  • Thanks for the advice but I'm happy with my Heckel

  • Nice name.

  • i wish i had a heckel..

  • @pumpkinsrsexy same! but i do love my puchner

  • Hey, this is really good. I'm a hopeful bassoon major, and so I have a couple questions for ya if you don't mind answering. :)

One, what brand and model is your bassoon? I've been working on a student model (something that I find quite disappointing) and yours looks pretty nice.

Two, how many years have you been playing? You have great intonation, and it made me wonder how long it took you to perfect that.

    Thanks.

    ~Manny

  • I play on a Heckel, but if you saw my other videos I'm playing on a Fox 220 in them.

At the time of the video I have been playing for 3 1/2 years but now I have played for 5 years.

Where are you thinking about applying???

    Marlin

  • i'm in love with you!

  • hahahahah thanks lolz

  • I LOVE THE BASSOON!!! 0:24 on is my favorite

  • Great playing. Not an attractive shirt, though.

  • hey i like that shirt......

  • hey how old are you are you going to college? which one? i assume you're majoring in bassoon.

  • hey david (i'm assuming)

I'm 18 (in the film I'm 17). I go to the University of Washington and I'm a bassoon major. I'm also from Southern California.

Same questions back at you. How old are ya? I take it you play bassoon also.

  • I'm a junior in high school and also want to major in bassoon and I'm looking at colleges right now. How's the music program and bassoon teacher at Washington???

  • Hey david,

The overall music program at Univ Washington is alright. However the bassoon professor, Seth Krimsky, is amazing. He is the reason why I chose to go to UW (even over other top ranked conservatories).

But anyway, where ya thinking about applying??

  • Beautiful bassoon sound!

  • MARLIN?!?! You did one of these!?!? AWESOME!!! :D

  • i was wondering if you had the sheet music or even the notes..... I love playing my bassoon. and i love this song. so if you have the music or can tell me where to find that would be great.

  • great job!! i luv ur vibrato

  • Way way nicer than the typical bassoon. Amazing tone and play style.

  • Absolutely beautiful Marlin, good job!

  • sooo smooth sounding, very nice

  • good sound my friend

  • wow i've never heard a bassoon sound so good!

    i play trumpet

  • this is better than everyone lol, HE ACTUALLY PLAYED THE FREAKIN TUNE, i am an expirenced trumpet player and i hate those other trumpet players who close their eyes and play really high pitched to show off, personally IT HURTS MY EARS, bassons rule, my freind is a basoonist by da way

  • That was cool!

  • Nice job!!! Oboe player here!!

  • You play really good.

  • great tone quality

  • hahahahaha ur playing the fag but seriously that was really good

  • at least he isn't a fag like you?

  • The bassoon is so weird.

  • uh...false

  • I agree, you rock on!!!!! love your presentation. love it love it. keep playing!

  • uh...true

    it's not a bad thing...

I was just saying, it's such an unusual instrument. There's nothing that resembles it or anything.

  • Your really good, basson is like the hardest instrument to play.

  • you're really talented! Do you want to study the bassoon after HS? Classical music? You should apply to Aspen Music Festival, if you do...I think you'd love it! Best to you...

  • Thanks!! I am applying to music conservatories for college to study bassoon. I went to the Tanglewood Festival last year. I really wanna go to the Music Academy of the West. That place is the shizz

  • I guess I'm more partial to Aspen because I teach there...:) Which schools are you auditioning for?

  • Really?!?!?! What do you play??

I'm auditioning for NEC, Colburn, Oberlin, Roosevelt, Rice, University Washington Seattle (amazing professor up there), and Cal State Long Beach (close to home and great professor).

  • Did you see the superbowl commercial? "I play the oboe." :)

So, since you are auditioning for Oberlin, would it be alright if I forward your video to George Sakakeeny? I played on a recital with him last weekend...he's a really great player and person, so I hope you get to study with him!

  • No I didn't see that I was actually on a plane to Chicago during the superbowl lol. Funny you mention George Sakakeeny, I just saw him like last week. If you want to forward it to him. I completely agree he is a great player, teacher and person, I really liked him.

How exactly do you know which school you want to go to? So far, I have loved every professor and school I have visited. I feel that my choice is going to based a lot on scholarship when I know it shouldn't be. Ugh it's so confusing!

  • Don't worry...you'll end up where you should be. Just go for whichever teacher you think is the best out there and the right one for you. And then, work your butt off!!! :)

You can find the oboe commercial here on youtube if you search on "oboe". It's really a good one...of course, I'm not biased just because I'm an oboist :)

  • blowin a long one... ehh

  • Hey everybody!!! I didn't win cause I'm not 18 : (

Thanks for all the great comments!! Glad you all like it.

Its not that heavy, just awkward to hold sometimes.

  • Dude. that was awesome..

  • awsome dude

is that thing heavy or what?

  • nice sound. bassoons are great!

  • That was so unique! I loved it.

  • Kick ass! Well awsome well done

  • Marlin--you did an awesome job. LOVE when you play the uptempo part. That ROCKS. You should win, man.

  • andrew marlin is a beast

  • you actually played that thing really good! I have never seen a good bassoon player before. Thank you for enlightening me!

  • Thanks!! On my other concerto recordings I had a student model bassoon, this is a pro bassoon. Do you play??

  • Oh yes, in fact i do, but not the bassoon, lol. I am aware however at the level of skill required to play it as well as you did. I understand the bassoon is not a very easy instrument to play, even though you make it look so.

  • Well it is like any other instrument with a few acceptions that make it difficult. Making reeds is a never ending process that can always be improved. Playing is pretty hard in comparison to other instruments, but I love it so it doesn't matter. What do you play?

  • Very cool!!! Awesome job! Hope to see you on the Grammys!
