and this song should not be reserved for our soil because there are still many Vietnamese who thank us and 99% of people who say they know this song only know the lyrics born in the usa and people question when he says to go kill the yellow man
This song is not patriotic nor is it unpatriotic this song came up in a very advanced american history class and this is probably the time I became a huge bruce springsteen fan because of the lyrics he writes this song was written for the troops who came back from vietnam and were turned down in every aspect of life when needed help and the american people frowned upon them and treated them terrible and the veteran affairs office did nothing to help them aka our politicians RIP Ronald cummings
Its absolutely patriotic/ but should be reserved for our soil. All points heard- all points respected- but when we decide to start acting like a family vs airing our differences to the world- we may have a chance at saving this great country- i lost a dear cousin in Afghan....all things since 9-11... Well Bruce - if you read uztune - i love you man- BUt THIS song deserves our soil only- OUR soil only- we all hear it WE MOST appreciate it R or L- but no one else gives an F about our blood shed o
@neocant1 your ignorance is bliss on what this song is about and vietnamese thank us to this day and this is a song that refers to how our soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen were treated by the people of america for there duty and how the veteran affairs did nothing to help them learn the lyrics instead of just born in the usa.
"Got in a little hometown jam Had them looters rif'ling in my home Reached my hand for a mobi phone Taken too by the hooded man" Born in the uk, man. I was born in the uk, man I was born in the uk, man I was born in the uk, man Born in the uk, man. Come back home to the smoking me-ess Armoured cop says "Son if it was up to me" Went down on the ground crying, man. He said "Son, you dont understand"
I noticed that the Boss changed lyrics of "10 years" to "30 years." It proves that he is always aware of and never forgets Veterans of Vietnam war. That's amazing and he has a real sympathy to people suffering.
redskins1111 do u even know that there are other countries beside USA in the world? what does anti-American even mean? if america does mistakes of course he is going to be against..wtf?
This is an anti-war song. Politicians and other idiots have hijacked the song to insert their own meaning into it, but Bruce wrote it as an anti-war song.
My favorite version of this song is when he sings it in the 2001 Live New York concert, it's amazing. He does the whole song much more slower and more emotionally, really brings out the lyrics much better. Check it out guys if you can, it's amazing.
I wasn't born there but it has been in my top 10 since I was about 10. The first line could be adopted by anyone who lives in the countryside all around the so called civilised world. GREAT SONG.

Priests were sent all over Europe with orders to destroy the ancient religion of the Goddess, create nations, and invent new languages for each new nation.Every language had to be based on the basque language because there was no other from which to work
there isn't much music out there that makes me cry, but there are some of Springsteen's songs that make me cry every time I listen to them. The words, the way he sings them, the way he plays- it's so clear how much he feels for people in pain
I´m never jealous, but when people say that they have been on a bruce springsteen consert Im almost cry in frustation because I've never been on one =)
And since I believe this is one of the greatest music consert of all time I adore everyone that was there that night :P
Fancythathat: If you mean that they're not party records, that's kind of true. But man, when you're going through tough times, Springsteen can save your life. And the live shows are the best of anything I have ever seen. But if you're just hating, well have a nice day anyway. Listen to what you love.

@nonofyall Good to hear! That's a mature attitude! You know what's good is good, it doesn't matter what "category" it falls into! Myself I preferred black music & rap when it was something different. I liked the Gap Band & rap like the early stuff obviously Run DMC was huge when I was a kid! I'm a big, mid-western, white biker & I have pretty eclectic music tastes as well! Appreciating different things instead of pigeon holing yourself is a sign of intelligence, so rock on!!! Take care
Bruce sings about the love of his country... but he doesn't like the way that his country supposedly disregards those that fight fir it. His countrymen weren't volunteers; they had no choice and disregarded when they came home. This was not America's finest hour. To all those right wingers out there: Bruce loves America!
Bruce can SING, and play many many instruments. He is gifted way beyond the average musician. Saw him in concert last November, and this man can sing, dance and perform longer than ANY Ive seen yet. He performed 3 hours straight...no breaks. He loves what he does, and it shows in his performance.
@bardostravsky I think he's actually one of the best vocalists, and he certainly was in his prime when he wasn't 52 (like he is here). He's not missing notes or anything here, and while I don't understand the certain twang/gravel thing he put into his singing at this time, he CAN sing. He does. But, you should also check out some other videos. Start with the ones from the 80s or 70s if you want. Even today though, even live, he still puts out.
People who argue that this is unpatriotic have got it wrong. American patriotism is its own breed - it's not about being in lockstep with the government, but admitting to the country's imperfections, blemishes and failures, and being proud of America despite it - even if that means disagreeing with the ruling party or politician. So when Springsteen sings out against the Vietnam War he's not being unpatriotic, he's confronting America's shortcomings and being proud regardless That's American.
Please. Patriotism isn't an organic thing. It's what you owe to shrewd moneyers and war-mongerers. It's nationalism painted a different color is all, and it takes a simpleton to walk around with something as insipid as PATRIOTISM tattooed to his forehead. That's what this song is about. It's SATIRE. The Boss has said it himself. Now, you go ahead and fling your jingoist crap at me, but it doesn't change it for what it really is. "Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious" -- Oscar Wilde
@billbenblue I don't know what dystopia you believe in where all pride in one's country is reduced to something owed "to shrewd moneyers and war-mongerers". Patriotism transcends politics because the government and country are not synonymous. There is something completely apolitical about the American spirit that resonates with me in the form of patriotism. And if you like Wilde so much (I don't), how about this: "Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing"
That's the difference between you and me, buddy. I don't endorse or subscribe to any "beLIEfs". If you want to believe in "patriotism", that's fine, I'm not trying to change your mind. Just accept it for what it is. Springsteen knew it for what it was, and that's why he wrote this song. That's also why he was offended when the Reagan administration completely misconstrued and distorted it (as you did) under the guise of "patriotism."
He is a total patriot. He constantly fights for what he believes is right. That's patriotism. Any dirtbag can wave a flag on July 1st. Means nothing. But he's got one of the best drummers backing him, after all !
I've just been in Spain (Barcelona) and i walked pass that stadium and i was thinking OMG Bruce has been right here OMG......By the way, that start when he says gracias and thanks everybody for coming to the show, That is not on the DVD is it? Ican't remember seein it!!
This song title is much misunderstood, it is not a celebration of the US involvment in the Vietnam war rather it is a recogntion of the sadness and difficulties Caused both home and abroad. It is not so much a celebration of what it means to be born in the USA but rather how sad it is when you do not receive all the postive elements of being a US citizen
This was hardly the stuff of "Morning in America." Springsteen rebuffed requests from the Reagan campaign to use "Born in the USA" as its official theme song, and responded to Reagan's New Jersey speech with a special dedication at his next concert: "The president mentioned my name the other day," Springsteen told the crowd, "and I kinda got to wondering what his favorite album must have been... I don't think he's been listening to this one.
@GLawrie63 I was just explaining to an acquaintance the very same thing the other night, it seems many people here this powerful chorus and are perhaps so captured by it that their brain switches off in anticipation of its return, I suppose it must knock 'em for six so much they are in no fit state to absorb the verses :-)
Back in the 80´s, Springsteen had a gig in Coblenz/Germany. One day later, the local newspaper wrote:
Those, who´ve been there now know why they call Springsteen "The Boss" and Grönemeyer just Grönemeyer (Herbert Grönemeyer is a quite popular german musician)
To me, Springsteen is the honest musician in the world. No scandals, no bullshitting, just great, great music!
@fancythathat Never mind dude, I guess he´s only known to germans. He´s got a horrible voice and some crazy ass lyrics (and not the cool crazy ass ones) to me he´s just a prick. I mean, there are some really good german musicians, but none of them is listed in the charts like Grönemeyer...
WTF is wrong with everyone calling him a "draft dodger"? He was in a head on collision with a Cadillac on his motorcycle when he was, I think 17...? If that's not a legit reason, what is? He failed his physical. He didn't live in a hole until the war was over. Get over it.
lol...the drummer is Max Weinberg from the E Street band. He has been with the band for 35 years...much longer than he was with Conan....and yes the studio version of this song shows that he is one of the best, if not the best, drummers of all time.
Thank you for sharing this, but are you born again?

American patriotism is its own breed - it's not about being in lockstep with the government, but admitting to the country's imperfections, blemishes and failures, and being proud of America despite it - even if that means disagreeing with the ruling party or politician. So when Springsteen sings out against the Vietnam War he's not being unpatriotic, he's confronting America's shortcomings and being proud regardless That's American.

@MrNever8
"Patriotism is a virtue of the vicious" -- Oscar Wilde
billbenblue 1 year ago
@billbenblue I don't know what dystopia you believe in where all pride in one's country is reduced to something owed "to shrewd moneyers and war-mongerers". Patriotism transcends politics because the government and country are not synonymous. There is something completely apolitical about the American spirit that resonates with me in the form of patriotism. And if you like Wilde so much (I don't), how about this: "Arguments are to be avoided; they are always vulgar and often convincing"

@MrNever8
" I don't know what dystopia you believe in"
That's the difference between you and me, buddy.

@GLawrie63 finally, someone hoo actually payed attention 2 more than the chorus of this song.
TheJohnny990 10 months ago

@GLawrie63 Thank you for clarifying that for people who dont know the true meaning of this song!

No scandals, no bullshitting, just great, great music!

fancythathat 11 months ago
@fancythathat Never mind dude, I guess he´s only known to germans. He´s got a horrible voice and some crazy ass lyrics (and not the cool crazy ass ones) to me he´s just a prick. I mean, there are some really good german musicians, but none of them is listed in the charts like Grönemeyer...
Lusth0g 11 months ago
WTF is wrong with everyone calling him a "draft dodger"? He was in a head on collision with a Cadillac on his motorcycle when he was, I think 17...? If that's not a legit reason, what is? He failed his physical. He didn't live in a hole until the war was over. Get over it.
Tigerpuffer 1 year ago
lol...the drummer is Max Weinberg from the E Street band. He has been with the band for 35 years...much longer than he was with Conan....and yes the studio version of this song shows that he is one of the best, if not the best, drummers of all time.
