  • "the royal anthem of New Zealand"? Wasat Mate? Youse canucks noes a lot about us, aye?

I thought both now had equal status, although God Save the Queen is rarely sung. It is probably only sung now on those very rare occasions when her Majesty is actually present, like the New Zealand Memorial service in London, where both were sung.

  • that's quite funny man :L

  • defend gaza

  • The greatest national anthem is a polish anthem

  • all anthems are amazing

  • im a kiwi for life

  • 2005

  • What year is this? anyone know?

  • My Favorites:

    Australia

    New Zealand

    Scotland

    My heritage!

  • why do singers have to glide onto the note from below? It may be a handy device for a soul singer,(used sparingly) but it sure weakens the strident composition here. Comments?

  • My favourite anthems:

    New Zealand

    Spain

    Netherlands

    Italy

    USA

  • i'd put the french one in there aswell

  • Although I'm an American I must say this is one of the most beautiful national anthems out there. The Maori verse is particularly lovely.

  • yeah I'll say :) I'm a new zealander and I'm pretty annoyed that high schools don't sing it as much as they should

  • et's name it the best anthem ever!! no comparisons allowed, it is absolutely inspiring

  • impresionante, vaya himno! es precioso! qué voz! SPAIN EXISTS!!!!

  • beautiful

  • I think it's really cool that they always seem to sing it in Maori and English. It's a beautiful hymn for a beautiful land.

  • That is always been our National Anthem, we don't 'sometimes' sing the English verse of the Anthem or vice versa. That is our full National Anthem, first half is in Maori, second half in English. Thanks, this is indeed a beautiful place to live. ;)

  • fantastic national anthem, beautiful

  • NZ anthem is awesome! makes me proud to be a kiwi, and everytime i hear it i get overwhelmed

  • KiaOra...The best national anthem in the world, lived in Australia for 27years but still call NZ home, the silver fern is on my heart.

  • Always for me too, I still get a tear in my eye, when I hear the NZ anthem.

  • you guys have a really beautiful national anthem.

makes my nipples hard, and i'm not even from NZ!

  • I love that language and the language doesn't look that hard. I wish she had song the entire thing on her cds.

  • I have just been sent this video form friends in NZ...I am a kiwi who lives in Australia, and have done for the past 15 years. Will you certainly know how to make a girl homesick, brought tears to my eyes....I want to come home hearing this...always loved our national anthem..tho' I never learnt the Maori words, as it wasn't taught when I was at school, but so beautiful..I will TRY to learn them, as I am an entertainer/singer....Thankyou so much for this heartfelt pride. Go the All Blacks.

  • Isnt it awesome how our nation embraces the maori culture...

Lyk, u dont see Autralians performing an Abo war dance/haka on the field ... or sing their anthem in Abo.. same goes for the Americans...

mean Aotearoa mean haha! (- Pacific Islander)

  • thats cause the Maoris kicked the shit out of the immigrants for it, its not like the european settlers were kind hearted nice, they tried to do what australia did and it didn't work, hmmm maybe a few clubbings in churches did the trick.

  • yeah the kiwis didn't treat the Maori well either, but they've made up for it now. Native Americans still lead second class lives here in the US.

  • oh god nz is a nice place i will never 4 get the 1 yr i lived there in chch what a country wow

  • You guys should be very proud of that anthem. It's very moving and includes all NZers. - (an aussie)

  • Respect to New Zealand!

  • the maori translation is different and nicer i think

but the both compliment each other perfectly

  • E Ihoa Atua >our creator ( Ihoa transliteration if Jehovah) O nga Iwi matou ra >of all people, including us Ata whakarongo na >you listen carefully to us me aroha noa >with unrestricted / unconditional love Kia hua ko te pai >may the fruits of our labour be blessed kia tau to atawhai >may your affections settle upon us manaakitia mai >help and look after us Aotearoa >the everlasting white cloud
  • Maori is more an interpretive than a literal language when you get beyond a certain level.

so there are also deeper meaning and connections to the maori words that maori speakers will understand.

  • Is Maori hard to learnÉ

  • just like anything it takes practise and training your brain to link new sounds to the vowels is probably the hardest thing for most people.

  • YES!

  • yeah well the maori verse or not the NZ people all know the haka word for word..

  • i really like it how lots of 'kiwis' (the european nzers) sing the maori words, i think it says alot about our nation and how much further ahead of the world we are in our respect of each others cultures, we got a long way to go but then so does the whole human race. just about every thread in youtube has the word retard in there somewhere but not this one (cept when i said it harhar i think we have one of the best anthems in the world cos it talks about peace and love

  • agree, The U.S. should be embarassed on how they treated the native americans.

  • oh yeah PRIDE COURAGE WE STAND IN BLACK! ALL BLACKS KA MATE!

  • the nga is probably a hard part to teach by simply writing but if people listen to how its prounounced kiwimatt's vid, they should hook on quick...

  • posting to hopefully help out..in brackets next to each line I did an easy pronounciation.

    E Ihoā Atua, (A E-Ho-ah Ah-2-ah)

O ngā iwi mātou rā (Or nah E-we - mah-toe rah)

Āta whaka rongona; (Ah-Ta Faka Ro-know-nah)

Me aroha noa (May Ah-Row-ha know-ah)

Kia hua ko te pai; (Kee-ah who-ah core tay pie)

Kia tau tō atawhai; (Kee-ah Toe Tore ah-ta fie)

    Manaakitia mai (Ma-na-ah-ki-tia my)

    Aotearoa (A-O-Tay-a-Ro-ah).

  • I agree bdlnz. I've been to a few rugby matches during the Tri-Nations and does sadden me slightly when I can see people sitting close to where I am, remaining silent during the Maori verse but then passionately singing the English Verse. How difficult is it to sing an extra 8 lines (which last about 40 seconds) for heaven's sake.

  • it's unfortunate but it's because lots of people are closet racists who don't want to accept maori language and culture is relevant to new zealand. they tend to be the same people who love everything british.

  • thank you mate, i was just telling gizo02 that most of us know the maori part. I moved from auckland to the states when I was 12 and I seem to remember most of the people I've met know how to sing our national anthem.

  • Yes I know that, but I wonder why many people are hesistant to sing the Maori verse when they know the words. Surely you're not trying to deny that at rugby games, less people sing the Maori part than the English part? The difference in crowd noise levels between the the two verses at any New Zealand game, home or away, is pretty clear.

  • Well if people know the Maori part, I wish they would sing it (the fans and the players). Watch the anthem part of any New Zealand match, and notice how a lot more people start singing once the English verse starts.

  • if you're from new zealand you should know that we learn the words of the anthem in primary school.

  • All younger people have learnt it. I was never taught the Maori part. People are afraid of mispronouncing it, I think.

  • I agree...the Tamariki learn it a such an early age and children sing both in Te Reo and English in their primary years but somehow only a perecentage of people sing the first half and then blast the English part... I have no idea why this is... I'm not even from NZ and I know the words and really love your anthem. I really can't speak highly enough about NZ but I love it and miss it and hope I get the job I applied for with the Crusaders next season! oh yeah... GO the AB's!!!

  • I love our anthem. I wish more people would join it during the Maori part though (the words aren't that hard to learn).

  • what are you talking about? people do know the maori part.

  • how beautiful...
