this is where the guitar skills are showing through! But this is great!!!! keep it up. getting my first shamisen in a week or two from 多田あつし。 cant wait he the man!
I think it's "Beyond The Yoshida Brothers" because if all you know of the Shamisen is your Yoshida Brothers CD this will take you beyond your experience.
Sugoii-ne! Yet, I respect the Yoshida Brothers for being able to keep such a traditional instrument alive in the eyes of our youth. But this take on Shamisen is a very contemparary view for us Americans to listen to. But you can never forget the roots of these instruments. I would not be surprised it Kevin recieved formal training in Shamisen. You can't read a book without knowing the author. I did enjoy it. I also think the Yoshida Brothers are amazing too. But both are equal.
Appreciate the great comment. If, by chance you really want to hear some really awesome shamisen players, look up Kinoshita Shinichi, Hiromitsu Agatsuma, Masahiro Nitta, Nitta Oyako, Takahashi Chikuzan, Shibutani Kazuo, Kaoru Osanai, Michiaki Shirata,
You are very welcome. I will definitley take a look at the other musicians. As a Taiko drummer, I feel a strong connection to the traditional styles of Japanese music. Shamisen and Taiko go hand-in-hand in making wonderful works of music. We have five Shamisen players in the group. I hope to one day be the only American Shamisen player in our group. I also love the Shinobue as well. Everything in the Japanese ensemble captivates me, and I only wish to learn as much as I can.
I think it doesn`t mean beyond as in better, I listen to Yoshida Brothers and Kevin as well. Yoshida brothers are better at tradiitonal sound but Kevin has a new approach to the instrument that is `beyond` what the Yoshidas are capable of creating. Maybe it just means that there is more to this instrument than what we see/hear when the Yoshidas play. But not exactly that one is better or worse. It depends on what you want to hear or how far you are willing to listen.
I think he is really an awesome player, but I just couldn't feel the real tone of the shamisen exactly because of the western kind of composition he did. It's a great player, but the song doesn't have the same feeling. He should work on that.

OH Man, What does all that kanji mean??
