Because the Government will grant a protest permit to virtually every group that applies for one. The KKK and Westboro Baptist Church can get them, and so can virtually everyone else. The main reason they require it is because they then set an area for the protest to take place, so that neither the protesters nor civilians are injured. Look at WBC - They always need police protection (granted by the permit) so they don't get killed.

Yes, everything is completely backwards. The government doesn't "permit" us to do anything. WE PERMIT THE GOVERNMENT TO EXIST. But since we're so backwards, we stupidly allow the government the ability to require and enforce permits. Most people's perception is that the government allows us to do certain things, but in reality it's the opposite. Somehow we've forgotten that.

@ager74 Erm, most cities in the world you are allowed to protest, but you have to inform the council beforehand. This obviously was a protest that was not informed by the council and therefore illegal. It isn't that hard to figure out :)

Actually LRAD speakers are hopeless despite the fact that they pioneer it back in the year 2000 during the US Cole bombing. Its only effective if its very near like 100meters even then by using a good earplug you will be saved. US Government spends all these unnecessary money getting non-lethal weapons to suppress uprising or demonstrations. Bottom line is don't worry if you face this round thing.

They didnt even use it in pittsburgh anyways. They only used the speaker on top of the swat truck. The LRAD is the one on the back of the humvee.
Personally the cops were fine. I was drunk walking around and they even gave me a ride home. Aslong as you arent doing something stupid, like throwing rocks through store fronts or at innocent bystanders, the cops left you alone.
