All I can say is HELL TO THE NAAAWWW... Scared me as a child gettin' up to get a glass of water at 11:00pm turned T.V. on GOT-DAMN Night Gallery soon as I see the intro of it I haul ASS (all of it) under da' blanket was VERY SCARED stuff like dis' need to come back on TV!!!
What was unique about Rod Serling, a true genuis, is not the obvious horrors you expect, as for many other writers, but the puzzling suspense Rod mixes in so deep, that makes the horror on its face, look like a ridiculous comedy. And then soon comes the unexpected twisted catches that scares one out of their skin, and can make a believer in many of the viewers on the phenomonon that he introduces.
like the little red room in the Amityville horror? or REDRUM from The shining? NIGHT GALLERY was a trully creepy show yall, used to scare the Hell outta Me as a kid of 5-6.
I only know that there is an unproven rumor stating as much.
Bill Weber claimed he helped create the story with the Lutzes (at a time when he was suing for part of the profits).
The Lutzes have always claimed it really happened, and have always maintained that certain parts of Anson's book were not true. But that was out of their control. Its no secret.
Most people who claim its a hoax point to the fictional parts of Anson's book.
But there's no way to prove the haunting was real, either.
well, i think the fact that the room wasn't on the plans means nothing sinister. the house was OLD, and maybe there were no original plans. an owner coming along even a few years after it was built could have had plans drawn up. or perhaps it IS on the plans...maybe it was originally nothing more than an alcove, and some xtra walls were added to make it a impromptu wine cellar or some other reason. so it was red. big deal. are fire trucks the devils playthings, too?
After the haunting, they made a list (on tape) of all the various things during their stay that they found strange, and the red room was one of them. Perhaps it had nothing to do at all with the haunting.
Perhaps there was some other logical reason for their dog to cower from it and run out of the basement, or for it to be painted all red and hidden behind a shelving unit. Who knows.
But the Lutzes never claimed it was a pit to Hell...
No. They called it a "red room" between themselves, not as a way of describing it to others. The "room" was really a very small space, about 3 feet tall so you have to crouch down to fit inside, and you could only stuff 2 people in there together. If it had a purpose, it was to store objects -- clearly not intended for people to be inside of (unless as a hiding space).
does anybody know the name of the painting? Rod serling calls it "she'll be company for you," but i think that is the name of the episode. i can't find the painting anywhere online.
ok just found this vid, ok the whole red room thing had been blown out of poportion, in the past red paint was cheaper and was used as we would us magnolia, so everyone had it on their walls, and the smell woild have been from the fact that the room haddent been aired in years . tats it no mistpry
I agree that the red room got far more attention than it deserved (becoming a "passageway to Hell" in the first movie, and a complete underground labyrinth in the 2005 remake), but the foul smell George mentioned was more than a musty odor you'd get from a confined space that hadn't had fresh air in a while. George described it as a horribly foul odor that came and went.
The significance as it deals with this episode of the Night Gallery, or its significance to the Amityville Horror, or its significance to this YouTube account?
Any and all I guess. I was just curious about the earlier comment "the red room lives on." So, apparently this episode of NG reminded someone of Amityville Horror?
Yes, this account is for posting different videos related to the Amitvyille Horror. And posting this clip was a goof cause they mention a red room.
Still, its interesting to see a mention of a mysterious red room made 3 years prior to the Lutzes' experiences. Some might say, "ah, so that's where they got that idea from," but that's not the point I'm making. As Rod Serling, himself, might say, "No point here - no point at all..."
The red room in the Amityville Horror story was something that was blown totally out of all proportion. In reality, Kathy Lutz discovered this tiny space seemingly hidden behind a moveable shelving unit. They found it odd because it was totally painted red, it had a foul odor, their dog would cowar from it, and it wasn't in the blueprints for the house. That's it. It was never a passageway to Hell or anything like that. They just found it odd.

This story was not one of the best on Night Gallery. I never understood it and it got very low ratings. Not Leonard Nimoy's finest hour here.

The Lutzes found it more "odd" than "sinister."
After the haunting, they made a list (on tape) of all the various things during their stay that they found strange, and the red room was one of them. Perhaps it had nothing to do at all with the haunting.

Which episode was with the toy horse that wouldn't fit back into its box and then grew huge and terrorized as per usual?
chrisgallo99 3 years ago
that was from a 1972 series called Circle of Fear-the episode was called Dark Vengeance--it starred Kim Darby and Martin Sheen

Yes, and the "red room" was a small space under the basement stairs. The DeFeo children stored some of their toys there.

maybe the previous tenants had sex parties and a debauched life style... or were involved in S&M...

I finally found the episode and I've uploaded it on YouTube.

Is it possible for you to upload the whole episode? I can't find it to buy and the one torrent I found seems to be 'dead'
The first season is at least on dvd boxset but it always takes forever for good old classics to be available.

From the opening of the story episode "She'll Be Company For You." It starred Leonard Nimoy.
