Shut up, haha, you're only mad because you think it's in 9/8. 9/8 would be like 3/4 if every quarter was split into 3 triplets. 5/4 is 5 quarter notes in a measure, which is what you have here. Actually I think someone mentioned 10/8 and that's actually more correct, but it's trivial
@robmadore1 It matters what time signature it's in because 4/4 is inescapable throughout modern Western music and this is a band that is happy to experiment with unusual time signatures. It's about progressive or experimental values and the creative aesthetic applied to music, it's an intentional choice used for effect by the band. It makes a more rhythmically interesting song. I'm being no snob, I'm not much of a musician but I am a drummer. "It's just music" - Please.
@iamrichardtheadult i'm a drummer too, i've been playing for 12 years, and i play guitar, been playing for 7. i can play in any time signature, and i'm not being cocky, i learned to play the black page when i was 15, go to berklee. radiohead is one of my favorite bands, no one can touch them. it just pisses me off when people debate about time signatures, it doesn't matter. this is in 5 btw for anyone wondering. all a song needs is a consistant groove and this song has it right here.
@iamrichardtheadult and nothing grooves harder than 4/4, you can play anything in 4/4, ever listen to messhugah? they never leave 4/4, but there songs sound like there in anything but 4.
For me, I percieve the album being about the different stages of life as you grow up. Everything is peaceful and perfect at the beginning. Than the insanity of reality that is kept from children sort of begins to seep through on National Anthem. Than existential angst of being alive. Morning Bell for me seems to be about divorce...that's just my interpretation though.
@hippunkhopnroll nice way to see it! It's really a great record, and because of that i think it's open to a lot of interpretations... i like yours, it also explains the title of the song Kid A
@hippunkhopnroll As with all Radiohead music released after OK Computer, I'd say it goes deeper than that. I think it depicts a dark future for all mankind, sorta of "what happened after no one heard the protests made in OK Computer". Keep in mind that there are various hints of Orwellian influence, a fine example being the Animal Farm reference in Optimistic.
morning bell - this song starts out relatively normal and is the main character's original personality, untainted, fighting against his second personality. The second part of the song, the creepy last half, is the other personalities responce. The second personality seems to over come the normal, with the disturbing sounds taking over the normal sounding guitars.
Motion Picture Soundtrack - the character accepts his fate as being utterly insane.
Idioteque - another crazy and frantic song, seeing the character in his worst. Seems to have had influence from the media/internet to put him in this frenzy "everything all of the time" and "this is really happening", reference to how interent/media shows us all this things that we are powerless to stop or control.
continued one more time D: sorry youtube sucks with this comment limit.
to me this album is all about a schizophrenic guy, think about it kind of make sense.
Everything In Its Right Place - Introduction to a character who is living rather normally, though something seems to be split "two colors"
Kid A - A very unsettling song, the introduction of his second personalilty.
The National Anthem- The character starts to have a mental break down, siginfied by the general chaos of the horns and track. "Everybody is so near, everybody has got the fear."
@CaptainPengu Who cares? Radiohead is pretty popular and people find music through the media whether it's a movie, montage, ad, simple youtube search, word of mouth, etc. They obviously like it because radiohead is GOOD.
@juanfranciscoh Well, that was a pretty tongue-in-cheek thing I said, sorry if it was difficult to read (it is the internet after all, can't really blame anybody).
Though I feel the media exposure really just makes the songs end up like "Creep"... and that whole can of worms. Where people only know one specific song and all that. Getting a more widespread appeal is great, but it's a shame when people don't go any deeper than one song (though this is subject to the contrary of course)
I wasn't sent here, I found it myself, and @BR0skiEs, personally it's all about musical discovery. This right here is like looking at a grotesque painting. Just look at the lyrics; "Cut the kids in half." Thom even said that the song was about cannibalism. People like it because it's like a high class desert - there isn't many musicians who's able to do what Radiohead does.
@MusicManiac2k9 Not really, the main reason not everyone listens to it is cause it is never played on the radio. Half of my friends just like the music, not really the lyrics. I can see what you are saying how its aquired taste cause it not exciting. But if you showed this to any teenager and told them that not everyone listens to this he or she would listen to this everyday. But overall i my opinion it is not a aquired taste, listen to other bands for that. Not gona say cause im kinda a hipster
@Mokurentate I'm tired of all the bullshit interpretations, if they knew that Thom Yorke used a method called Dada poetry to make this songs they wouldn't talk shit. SO I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU, SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE MUSIC!

@brownmist123 A musical time signature where the beat is counted on a quarter note, and each bar contains five of these beats.
