  • Doing it that way is not only a good way to break your arm or wrist but also a good way to throw out your back.

  • @edisonphonographs I should have mentioned that provided the spark timing is retarded the engine should not back fire. If it backfired while cranking this way it would probably snap one if not both of your arms. By only pulling the crank upward with only your left hand with your thumb alongside your fingers you prevent injury should the engine backfire as the crank will throw your hand out of the way. The best way to prevent getting hurt is to be careful and do it the right way.

  • @edisonphonographs "The best way to prevent getting hurt is to be careful and do it the right way." amen to that, sir.

  • Aren't you supposed to find top dead center before you start cranking? That seems to be what they do on other videos where the car actually starts.

  • Hit the 1911 thing and watch this. lol

  • o yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • I thought hand cranks were declared obsolete in the 1930s.

Never seen a 1937 Chevrolet hand cranked.

  • @harley55100 they made them till 90's on some cars maybe even later

  • @harley55100 Hand cranked cars were made well into the 80's on Lada's

  • The car is a 1937 Chevrolet

  • that is really dangerous! well, its your arm, not mine

  • @PullinEasy I'm the guy behind the camera, It's not me trying to start the car.

  • You're lucky it didn't actually start. You're supposed to use one hand, and you're not supposed to grab it tightly You're supposed to cup the handle.

Hand starters used a clutch that disengaged the handle once the engine started. However, these are old ass cars and even at the time, they were primitive devices and were known for failing and breaking people's hands, thumbs, and arms. There are videos on YouTube of people both getting hit with starter handles and doing it perfectly.

  • @EntropicMisanthropic also, ur mom cups the handle.

  • @EntropicMisanthropic The starting cranks on antique cars are not forcefully spun by the engine because of a failed clutch but because the engine fired before top dead center of which ever cylinder was on the compression stroke forcing the engine to turn backwards. The starting crank will not release when the engine turns the wrong way and will be driven backwards forcefully. If the engine should backfire if you crank left handed and only pull up the crank it should miss your arm.

  • Yeah, really dangerous way to start a car, you always want to use just your left hand so if it backfires you don't lose your arm.

  • @Figilswif im left handed

it blows off my hand and i'd be screwed!

  • @atari26003 Naw it won't break your left arm if you do it right, watch the video "How to Start a "Model T" Ford...should be in the sidebar of this video. It'll show you what I'm talking about.

  • 1937 Chevrolet.

  • OMG no two hands just no!!

using a starting handle like that could loss your thumb if your not careful if it kicks back like it did

  • I wish my truck came with one of those.

  • they start very easy by hand if the engine was tuned up right.
