  • So what the protesters are saying is:

Free speech is ok as long as you agree with me!!

  • this wasn't that bad. I say this as a devout Catholic. It's a good way to reflect on the humanity of Jesus who didn't sin but was tempted.

  • funny how you have freedom of speech in the US, UNLESS it's about Christianity. US citizens don't get THAT upset when they see Muslims portrayed as vicious murderers or when Buddhism is mocked. The outrage comes from the fact that people in the US can be intolerant to an obscene degree and then they talk about Christian values (love your neighbour, etc.) when in fact it's all about money, control and avoiding critical thought.

  • @Regenmacher175 Your statements are actually ENTIRELY backwards. These days, the assault on Christianity is largely overlooked and often even encouraged by those in power. It has become perfectly acceptable in our society to demonize Christianity, but haven't you noticed that if anyone on the media even dares say ONE bad thing about Islam how much of a backlash there is for it? Our society is VERY sympathetic towards muslims and hardly at all for christains. You've got it all backwards.

  • The Last Temptation of Christ is the most amazing movie ever created.

  • This was just silly, these people seriously need to grow up.

  • ive just watched the news and saw muslims burning our flags in our streets because people are wearing poppies to commemorate the fallen soldiers ...what is going on

  • Paul Schrader is such a badass. Fuck yeah!

  • The Church plays semantical games? It is amazing how many people are totally ignorant of the development of early christianity in the late roman world yet they comment erroneously and spout inaccuracies. The Church understood Christ's divinity far before the Council of Nicaea - 325. Just read the writings of the Church Fathers that predate Nicaea and the Gospels themselves explicity reveal the hypostatic union of Christ being divine and human.

  • The ending is the best thing I've ever seen. But you got to watch it without one break

  • Hypothetical:

IF I were supreme being-the son of God-and able to raise myself from the dead-what fear would I have of dying?

This film shows Jesus as WE are-weaknesses,flaws,faults and all. It is Jesus' acceptance of the human condition and his example to bear these weaknesses and rise above them-in fact rise above and LOVE those that harm you, that makes the Christ myth so powerful...and Im an atheist....but its a great story!

  • Brilliant film!

  • What is the name of this documentary?

  • Fiction, based on fiction, causes an outrage. How immature and childish is that? Times like that make me embarrassed to be an American. You have people on their knees trying to telepathically communicate with invisible sky creatures. Stand up, and grow up.

  • That dumb nun obviously never gets out. Has she not SEEN any FRENCH cinema!??

  • Christians often put aside Jesus' human nature (that is a wrong thing to do), but this movie puts aside his divine. Go figure.

  • Hey Scorsese. Remember that scene where Jesus goes into the temple and the money changers are there and Jesus starts punching them out and starts dumping over the tables and then he just loses it on that one guy?........Was that your idea?

  • @CoolerKing37 Jesus threw out the sellers from the temple calling them "thieves" in a house of worship. Mark 11:15-19.

  • for the last time it was not the council of nicea that creted the divinity of christ because it the divinity was known as concept because christ had claimed to be the son of god. in this movie the events are similiar to the bible but put the basis on alternative events as "if it was different what was gonna happen?

  • People have used Christ so much to obtain power (as they've done with other faiths) that people mistakenly believe that faith itself is not individual. It is. If someone puts out their interpretation of someone else's faith, everyone goes wild. Is it not enough to live as an example of one's faith rather than forcing others to adhere to your faith? That's about power and control. Read your Bible. Jesus wasn't about power or control. Jesus was a libertarian. He gave man freedom to discern truth.

  • It's a good movie. I was a teenager in a religious family and I was suckered by the religious media at the time. I thought this was going to be some attempt to drag Jesus through the dirt, but it wasn't. It's strange. I consider myself a thoughtful person who wants to be open to any reasonable opinion. I can only look back at my younger self and shake my head.

  • I wanted to watch about movie about Jesus this Easter so i picked this movie. I'm so glad i did as i discovered a movie far more powerful, spiritual and meaningful than Passion of the Christ. This movie should not be seen as some challenge to Christian theology. It stays within Christian theology. It just takes a more analytical interpretative approach to the story of Jesus. Only those who are close-minded to any interpretation can take offense.

  • "It's a fiction".

The ENTIRE BIBLE is a fiction, Marty. Great film though. You did good.

  • lol some religious people are just stupid

  • Just bought a dvd copy of the film, gonna watch later...

  • @bluediamond27y Congratulations...

  • this movie is based off of a fictional book...well then again so is every religion lol sorry I couldn't resist

  • I really don't see how the movie was so bad. I mean it's not saying Christ's sacrifice was in vain or that he never went through with it. It is instead juxtaposing the life of the savior and the life of a regular man.

  • RELIGION SUCKS.

  • I can't help but think that most of the controversy would have been avoided had more of these people actually seen the film. Even more so if they were intelligent and open enough to comprehend the film. Christ is never shown sinning in the film, it's merely a film about temptation. It's kind of like how the NAACP protested Coonskin largely until they were able to see the film upon Bakshi's invitation and realised it was the very opposite of a racist film.

  • SCORCESE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. HE GREW UP CATHOLIC.

  • @sandroeleven Umm... have you actually SEEN the film?

  • I have not seen this film yet, but it looks absolutly beautiful. I really want to see it!

  • willem dafoe is awesome, and not afraid to take risks:jesus and the man in the movie ''antichrist'' are really controversial material to work with

  • ITS FICTION!!!!!!

Jesus warned us that there would be many false christs!!!

  • @brandisify

No he didn't - he said that many will come in his name, saying that Jesus was the Christ, and that they will decieve many. (i.e Jesus was saying that he was not the Christ but many will come later saying that he was - and they are wrong yet they will be believed)

  • Boy!! Rightwingers are dumb

  • The author was excommunicated by the Eastern Orthodox church for writing the book. He was a courageous, brilliant man who had a huge breakthrough of spiritual insight.

    His work strengthened my spirituality.

  • they apparently haven't seen The Holy Mountain.

  • how can a religious movie not include the FSM?? it's blasphemous!

  • Props to Scorsese for the courage to make this film. I'm a Christian and it only strengthened my belief after watching it.

  • Anyone know the name of that awesome eighties song near the end

  • the sad thing is this film was ignored for years and only made $8 million, yet a 2 hour snuff film made by a crazy Anti-Semite gets all the accolades by the public and makes half a billion dollars at the box office

  • @DarkProphet94 shows you something about america's sick culture. we don't like to think, but we sure do love violence.

  • @DarkProphet94

    ^^^

    This. x)

  • Where were these assholes when the Passion was happening??

  • @wesgriff1

they were in the theater masturbating

  • Faeden No

  • Beside this, let's go abroad and spread democracy and freedom of speech to fanatic countries like Iran...please, just give me a break, bunch of hypocrites!!!...

  • the catholic church is the most blasphemos, idol worshipping, child abusers, they need to repent badly or fear judgement of a righteous god

  • Even though Jesus is tempted off the cross he asks his father to let him try again. He fulfills his destiny and becomes fully divine. The film also deals with how the idea of Jesus is more important than Jesus himself, which I found very interesting.

  • Martin Scorsese was a drug user, why he never says about it?

  • @gvele89 Have you never taken drugs? Alcohol, Tobacco, Asprin????

  • JESUS IS RISEN

  • If Jesus was both human and divine, he would have to have flaws because humans aren't perfect.

  • Are the religious bigots in this clip really that brain dead? Jesus never really did get of the cross it was a dream suggesting how it would have happened if he did get off, and the Judas thing was to get you thinking. The movie is supposed to get you to think, hence why religious morons are against it, they are against thinking for yourself. Christian cult member idiots.

  • @Faeden- Catholics (or, I should say, a very specific group of Catholics) did the same thing with Kevin Smith's Dogma. They protested it without really knowing anything about the film. They never opened their eyes enough to understand how faith-affirming both of those films are. And then they go on their high horse.

Frankly, as a Christian, it's only one of many reasons that I will never be a Catholic. Hooray for Protestants!

  • @ogredm Well I am neither a Protestant, nor Catholic, I am simply spiritual, but agree with you. Its easier for the holier than thou flock to rant and rave, rather than to actually listen, observe, and to learn. And Dogma was a great movie, someone stole my copy of it though :(

  • Take it from me. I'm Christian and a big fan of Martin Scorsese and after I saw this picture, I didn't like it at first and I thought that it was blasfamous, but as the days went by after I saw it, I began to like it more and more, and I eventually just gave in and I came to the conclusion that the story isn't from the scriptures and it's from someone else's point of view. So the story isn't about the scriptures, you know what? Get over it!

  • To Bob Waliszewski,

Where in the Bible does it say that JESUS created the world and its people? That was GOD. JESUS is the SON of GOD. Jesus came AFTER the world and its people were created. Get the picture?

  • @SirCamera ...Sir, I disagree with you...John 1:1...(in the Bible) "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2. He was with God in the beginning. 3. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4.In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind"...doesn't get any clearer than that.

  • I laugh whenever I see people from the Catholic Church talk about morality.

  • "Funding for religious movies completely dried up."

-Snarl- Thanks a lot Martin Scorsese, everyone else on the film, and don't forget all the ridiculous protesters who made that possible.

  • the only thing blasphemous about this film is how hated it is, it is one of the most important flms of all-time

  • it's a great film in my own view.

  • we greeks are very satanic indeed...lol... i want t see that film..plz if someone can give me a link or something!

  • Luke 4:13: When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

Jesus was tempted in EVERY WAY!!!!!! But, in EVERY WAY, he resisted temptation.

Don't screw with the word of God!!!!

  • Fantastic movie!

It shows how Satan works. He is not a stupid devil. Very smart one indeed. Its realistic that Satan would try to corrupt Jesus, if you believe that both God and Satan exists.

In fact he will try to corrupt us all, perhaps disguised as your local reverend or an enraged film critic.

  • Isn't it pretty obvious that if Jesus Christ himself could pick one filmmaker to direct a film regarding his life, he would choose the director of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas?

  • wow i really want to watch this movie now, never knew this movie existed , and to hell with all the fanatics out there who cant stand to even hear of a possiblitiy that something could have happened any other way in the bible

    Idiot fanatics make jesus facepalm

  • 4:28

that little kid in the lower left-hand corner!!!

    WTF is he THINKING?????????

  • @ffejgib Practicing his archery, maybe?

  • Lol at the idiots carrying signs

  • These over zealous people play into the hands of over zealous and snearing atheists and non-believers(not that all non-believers are snearing but a lot are) but this film was made by a devout Catholic and reaffirmed mine and many others' faith as it verified,as an allegory rather than a presentation of truth, many Christian and specifically Catholic beliefs regarding redemption and Christ's undeniable purpose.

  • is this a christian movie and what is it about

  • Its about a sacred man reverting to a live of a normal family man. Just kidding.

  • in siskel &ebert's review siskel says he had a religious experience watching and ebert said it made him think about the christ in a more serious way than he ever had before. now to the religous, all they see is jesus having doubts. "how dare they" show the human side of man given such responsibility. but yet they themselves say he is both god and man? i can't help but conclude, the religious right's problem with the movie is with having to think! and thinking, to them, is dangerous to faith.

  • @avalanchesoul: They're problem was that they didn't understand the movie. They didn't realize that the ENTIRE POINT of the film is that Christ is tempted, but ultimately refuses it, forsaking what may have been a peaceful life for sacrifice.

It's just a classic case of how the Catholic Church is the worst thing that ever happened to the Christian faith.

  • @avalanchesoul Bravo! well said, it is dangerous to think and most religions are opresive, the catholic church had to come up with something like jesus christ to keep its people on its reins, perfect condition for explotation.

  • @tiacota??????????????

    I dont understand your comment.

The catholic church came later and twisted the scriptures.

I grew up catholic and I am finally a born again christian, and I cant believe all the nonsence the catholics

    teach.

  • @avalanchesoul I kind of agree with your point here. I've always believed that God is able to defend himself, and that we humans should stop trying to protect his personality so hard. I guess the fear of many Christians at the time was that this movie was making fun of Christ, but from the interviews it seems to me that Scorsese &C Co. were very earnestly exploring a theme and posing good questions.

  • JAJA I had fun washing this at least I saw americans make protests that actually catched my pretty eyes : \

  • good movie :)))

  • OMG, these comments over here, specially DavidVelezPerez! You are an total ignorant fool!

Haven´t nobody considered the idea that maybe Evolution and Creation-theory can be put to together?! Why does people always look things with black or white aspeckt? Like this film; it does´tn offence me or my believes, but still i don´t believe totally in this film´s theory. People, you can always combine ration and faith! Believe yes, but also ask and think youself!

  • If only the "official" Jesus were more like the one depicted in Last Temptation...the New Testament would have been so much more compelling, interesting, and attractive.

That opinion aside....the Christian hissy fit over this movie is depressing. If anything the movie reaffirms the Christian mythos as a wonderful and accessible thing...and yet they act like this movie has a scene where Jesus rapes a pig...

  • @Eldeecue then what do you think of the Muslim hissy fit over the South Park episode entitled, 200? You know the one where Trey and Matt received death threats?

Im not disagreeing that the Christians overreacted. I just want more ppl to open their minds and stop being so onesided. Just wanted to hear your opinion.

    Much love. be well

  • These people forget that Jesus is God in Human form. It is shown in the Bible, he tempted 40 days and 40 nights. We dont know how great were the temptations but we have example about temptations and how Jesus reponse to them. It was always God First not our Human needs. Jesus stated we didnt have to worry and He will provide for our needs. If we believe,Jesus is OUR SAVIOR!!!

  • I`m sayin` this as A Catholic so please keep that in mind.If there was A Jesus , he was A Prophet!Nothin` more!

  • I remember standing in line to see this film in Toronto, seeing all the Christian fascists outside telling me I would go to hell if I watched the movie. I have never had a problem with daring filmmakers or with Christ as portrayed in the Gospels. I was not expecting and I still do not expect anything intelligent from these people. God save us from your followers, I beg you! Scorsese intended no malice, but alot of malice is coming from those who claim to know Christ, but who clearly do not.

  • I think in this movie, Jesus is exhibiting all the signs of a painful, prolonged Kundalini awakening. The earlier tortured Christ has endured very nasty symptoms of awakening-Which can include facial pain as he decribes, amongst other things. Later, he emerges less afraid to face his destiny. It is worth looking into Kundalini awakening, a real phenomena-but rare, and noting the paralells.

  • i would like to no from what documentary this is from

  • Irony: Jesus protected from Christians.

  • I am an orthodox Christian and I absolutely LOVED this movie. Taking it as Martin Scorcese described it, a fiction that allows us to explore who Jesus is and the nature of human beings, I thought it was incredibly profound and moving. It is certainly more authentic than most so-called Christian 'art'. I cried with this movie, it was so beautiful.

  • "the most blasphemous, satanic movie ever made." I always thought that was "Battlfield Earth" LOL.

  • Hilarious!

  • @AndrewMann552 loooooooooooool

  • @AndrewMann552

    nice..

  • @AndrewMann552 Naw, it's The Last Airbender.

  • Jesus created? I thought it was god o.o

    make up your mind

  • Lord God who rules over all the way you judge is true and fair, jesus is holy one

  • I think we can all agree that Scientologists are insane and their opinions don't matter.

  • someday we'll all outgrow the need for an adult version of the imaginary friend. unlikely.

  • @nickotwincities God falls under every definition you can think of. Thus it is easy to call god an adult version of the imaginary friend. The hard part is to actually prove that god is an adult version of the imaginary friend. Without a proven definition, your would-be belittlement of the subject of many people's deepest beliefs falls flat on its atheist face. Better luck next time.

  • Was that Sister Wendy in the beginning?

  • Reactions are so depressing. This is such a great film.

  • This film is so blasphamous!!!

Who will rise up for Me against the wicked?

Who will make a stand for Me against the workers of iniquity? Psalm 94:16

  • It's necessary to offend to provoke debate. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Scientologists, Pagans, whatever, get the fuck over yourselves.

  • i totally agree.

  • i think the film exposed how hateful christians are and how their filthy bible has brainashed them

  • AGREED!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Oh noes, the little x-tian is mad at me.

I'm gonna cry now. Boo fucking hoo. :D

  • Generalization, much?

  • and considering Christ himself was condemned for blasphemy, I wish so-called Christians would be more careful before throwing that charge, especially regarding something few of them even bothered to see or read.

  • So, a heartfelt mediation on Jesus sacrifice (sacrificing the gifts God gives humanity) gets boycotted, but a spiritually empty piece of torture porn like The Passion is a blockbuster. Why are Christians afraid to consider that maybe Jesus was tempted to want what all God's children are offered (marriage, family, etc.) The fact of being confronted by that, seeing others take joy in it, and refuse it for yourself for a higher cause is the definition of sacrifice.

  • Thank you, ckel29. On every count.

  • God created humans therefore Jesus is the son of God as we are all sons and daughters of God as well DUH!! lol

  • Its actually a really good movie, epic even, but not my fave Jesus movie. I don't think its all as blasphemous as Xtian's make it out to be. Its a lot more flattering towards Jesus than say The Passion of the Christ which just shows was a lovely bloody hunk of meat Jesus made. This movie actually tried to evaluate Jesus as a human being, and to me that's cinema done well.

  • The movie was good but Martin is so overrated.

  • may jesus forgive marty 4 making this picture.

  • Amen

  • Does anybody know where you can find this whole program-the passion religion & the movies ?

  • i found it on "history channel international"

  • A masterpiece.

  • I don't like this movie, I will say what movies I like about Jesus: Jesus of Nazareth (1977), Jesus(1979), The Gospel of John (2003), these movies are good to see and to understand who was Jesus, and if we are christians we don't have to see movies like this last temptation of christ

  • i bet everybody is very interested in which movies you find good and which movies you don't.

  • This Film is Good, The Last Temptation of Christ. Indeed. It is focused upon the theme of the Spiritual Conflict, how man's struggles so much just to attain Adhesion with his Creator. Yeshua (Jesus), in this Novel and Film, Symbolizes all the Righteous in the world who strives day-by-day, and struggles with thoughts of Lust, Agony, Pride, Delusions of Grandeur while laboring hard just to attain adhesion with God. It is not a Blasphemous Film, Only those who are ignorant, indeed, would call it so

  • how is called that stupid nun that makes a lot of money in that religious channel

  • I watched this movie when it first came out. It was a disgrace then as it is now. This was truly a movie with satan's prints all over it. And how can anyone who claims to be a follower of Christ Jesus say they loved this movie...go figure? The events in this movie never, ever happened as it was portrayed here. Then the weak minded people are decieved with the DaVinci Code. That too had satan's signature all over it. Accept Jesus, read your Bible and Love as He loves us. Father Tessio.

  • Amen

  • Nobody has ever claimed this film is based on fact. The disclaimer at the beginning says as much. It's a film. It's not the scripture, it's just an exercise in belief. If you can't see that then I feel sorry for you.

Well, I'm sure you can continue to enjoy Mel Gibson's non-spiritual snuff film as a reasonable alternative.

  • "The most serious mis-use of the craft of film-making"

Meanwhile, behind closed doors, his favorite movie is probably the Terminator, because he sees the shootout at the police station as a symbol of his own fantasies of "utterly" destroying anyone who has an opposing view to his.

Talk about hypocrisy and blasphemy. He probably thinks he's getting brownie points from God for dis-agreeing with the movie's message.

  • Its is a very good movie. Not my favorite but good as well. Interesting. Religious people are always problematic ones.

  • A great movie about a powerful mythology.

Easily the best film about Jesus ever made, and certainly the most intellectual.

The Christian-produced 'Jesus Film' (1979) is strong too. 'King of Kings' & 'Jesus of Nazareth' is worth seeing as well.

    But 'LT' is the best.

  • "A great movie about a powerful mythology."

    My thoughts EXACTLY.

  • The only thing that the demonstrators forget about is what the God thinks about the Movie? Do they know for sure that the God hates the movie? What if Jesus himself is a FAN of this film?

I'm a Christian too, but I loved this movie and I'm a fanatic of Scorsese's films. 1st: it's just a fiction. 2nd: Jesus chose the 'right' thing at the end of the movie. 3rd: Jesus is more humanic, so he's nearer to us.

This is not blasphemy. This is art.

By the way: much better than Gibson's Passion.

  • The last temptation is one of my favorite movie (and book) ever.

  • The question is this why they allow this film to be copy in VCD & DVD. Is a fiction movie but many viewer watch the film because they have a copy without knowing what influence of the viewer how they think about Jesus on the cross.

  • Spirituality is beautiful, religion sucks! You can tell in 2 seconds that the nun interviewed at the beginning is NOT a spiritual person.

  • it is blashpemy. i wonder how people would react if there was a movie based on hitler and how the director decided to show hitlers good side and going against all history facts. it was a very poor judgment on scorses to make such a film. people say hes catholic, i cant really understand what was going through his mind. i watched the film and i was truly disgusted by it. thats my honest opinion

  • There is a film showing a little of Hitler's good side called Downfall and u know what it still doesnt change the fact that he was a monster. people are not all good or all bad they are capable of both.

I found this to be a very spiritual film BTW

  • Here's the thing Hitler had a good side, Even the most depraved individuals like Hitler have virtues.

And great saints had flaws. Paul was a murderer, Martin Luther King was a philanderer, and Jesus was born human.

The funny thing Jesus was condemned and accused of blasphemy by his own people. And he was mocked and crucified.

  • Free speech is one thing, but Jesus is another, ha? Talking about fake love and fake morality ..

Here goes: These self proclaimed guardians of truth represent exactly the kind of people that demanded the crucifixion in the bible! Because they thought they OWNED the truth.

And now, instead of meditating on their own symbolic role in that brutal crime against the man, they have the nerve to claim their part in creation of god ... He must have enjoyed it; after all- he asked for it, didn't he?

  • This movie is a very spiritual film, and an honnest way of a great filmmaker's quest,Scorsese,a very Catholic man himself, with humanity and God.

  • jesus as both man and god . the exploration of of jesus as man in this film is the focus

  • ok fine. But in making Jesus like man, it adds commentary to our relationship with God.

  • For those of you who speak of the good for this movie, stop listening to the lies in which Satan is speaking into your ears. It's bad enough that homosexuals are believing his lies that it's okay to be gay and be a Christian. Why doesn't Hollywood ever make movies that mock the Muslim religion? Satan is attacking Christianity big time. SAINTS OF GOD UNITE AND BEWARE OF THE FALSE BELIEVERS FOR THEY WILL LEAD YOU ASTRAY.

  • Did you even see the movie.? This movie was made 20 years ago...and it actually made me appreciate Christ more than any other movie. It's actually a love letter to what a great figure he was.

  • To call this work of fiction blasphemy is to completely ignore the value of the message in this Film.

Though Jesus may be blasphemously portrayed as a human, with human desires, it is his challenges of these desires/temptations to save humanity that brings this story close to home, in our own hearts.

Christ in this film is tempted, challenged but wins. When we are tempted/challenged we don't always win. Jesus's victory paves the way for our salvation...by showing the path we don't always take

  • ... perhaps because we don't think it is possible to take.

This path is necessary for what the "christ" in this film is aiming for, and perhaps what the true Christ was aiming for...Human justice and recognition of human brotherhood. Look at the movements of Ghandi, MLK, and Cesar Chavez...they all strived to take the path of Christ because they believed it was the only way for true justice.

Is the Accurate portrayal of Christ really important... or is it The Message?

  • In this film its The Message.

  • hæ
