  • damn, back when music was REAL. no autotune here fools.....

  • why not say he was one of the best artists ever instead of saying he was one of the best 'black' artists ever? color shouldnt matter anymore. white people owe nothing to black people but respect as if they were white or any other color. equal. stop using the race card already, its ignorant and weak.

  • Voice is amazing, percussion is amazing, bass line amazing = Soulful music personified

  • If you asked Curtis what time is was? . . . .and he replied "why it is six o' clock" . . . it would still sound like he was singing the best song you had ever heard!

  • curtis looks so unassuming, love this and Gypsy Woman. thanks for posting. "the aim of his flo is to move a lot of blow" lyrics for days man

  • YouTube! Put the original Makings of You with Curtis, not some dude with a two dollar guitar that sings like a migraine headache.

  • I can't help to listen this wonderful song in a cadillac, cutlass, regal or any motown's cars you can name it.

  • The gentle Genius was someone who deserved to have a #1 on The Billboard Pop Charts, and this tune was supposed to be it. Trouble is, People back in 1973 didn't have good taste. I loved the track, if that means anything.

  • There are 12 reincarnations of Curtis modestly disliking his own great performance.

  • @SkullFucked911

Aaaaaand finally we are made privy the reality of the situation. Well played.

  • Total fuckin' badass original!!!!!

  • this is such an all the time everywhere song

  • 10 people have no soul...

  • @devid1969 Together with James Brown and Sly Stone!

  • Curtis Mayfield - black Eric Clapton?

  • How unique is this sound?? Soulful, creative, deep lyrics!

  • I wish I'd be as cool as one of his butt's hair.

  • @F3FisGoodforYou HAHAHAHA!!!!

  • Curtis was so gifted and talented in the arts, composing and even singing with that beautiful voice. I saw SuperFly at the theaters when it came out, the soundtrack blew me away then and still does...another one gone far too soon... pEaCe

  • Classic music with a sweet voice. Most old schoolers and sing live. Groovy man

  • The great artists music works whether played live with the studio sweeteners this version kicks ass because of the attitude of his great backing band. Curtis Mayfield was the man and like Marvin, Stevie and many others their music was even epic live because of their humanity and SOUL they bought to their music.

  • Ron O' Neal playing the red guitar LOL

  • curtis mayfield was a genius...simple as that

  • all the movie and 70s versions had a classic appeal - i had to do a remix of this classic and hope that you allow it , its such a smooth pimpish vocal performance. it inspired many a hip hop rapper as well.

  • Amsterdam, 1973: Popped into a bar for a beer, and they had the Superfly album reel-to-reel. First I had heard it, and wow. Asked for it for Christmas when I got home that year, and Mom got it. Can't imagine Mom asking for it - but the math says she was only 55 then. Long gone now. Yikes. Thanks, Mom, and Curtis, too.

  • OOOO000ooowww supa flyyy ! das my jam

  • Curtis shall always remain as one of the best black artists ever for various reasons:

    1. Owned all his recordings unlike many black artists of that time.

    2. Was at the forefront of civil rights movement helping black people.

    3. Preached peace and love between black and white even after his own poverty, deprived upbringing.

    4. Produced, wrote, performed music and vocals of all his music.

An unbelievable phenomenon. Thank you God for allowing me to see him twice in London live. wow.

    RIP.

  • @schmatever lol do post this to every video? I am not

  • @schmatever lol do post this to every video? I am not saying its a bad thing but we know already :P

  • Very good!

  • Tight band!

    "That's what he's tryin' to do, y'all."

  • Dig it! Is that Matt 'Guitar' Murphy on the ES355 behind Curtis??

  • Those were the days! Thank you!

  • 4 votes negative...how the fuck can ya not like Curtis man!!!

  • @187freez racism?

  • @187freez They are deaf and blind for sure!!

  • @tpavan i hear ya mate! ya goddamn right

  • @187freez 4 deaf ppl maybe? Either that or slight mental retardation? Curtis RULES!! Move on Up is one of the BEST songs ever MADE!!!... this one is good too, of course! ;)

  • @187freez Peeps that don't feel Curtis M probably were just born or perhaps just don't like his type of music, it sure does not minimize his music one iota. I grew up in the South Bronx and he was just one of many I enjoyed. To each his own, we cannot let others hinder our personal taste in music. Just sayin.

  • @187freez if your not superfly

  • four people are neither super nor fly

  • i thought the next curtis would be anthony hamilton or musiq but i cant put that pressure on em.

  • 4 people ain't fly enough to thumb this down.....

  • All these assholes wanna walk around and claim they are they shit....Nah, CM was/is the shit. If you can't appreciate his tunes, your inept and tone deaf.

  • Thanks a million .... The REAL "King of Cool" Curtis Mayfield...

    Thanks for posting ... awesome X 1000000000

  • this was the decade when a million black men went to prison

  • weakness was.........

loss dont ask qiestions.........play for keeps

  • Man.. music has gone a long way... Thank God for that....

  • Curtis Mayfield had many gifts..He shared them with the world..R.I.P. Curtis Mayfield!!

  • dammmn. love that smooth ass voice

  • trying to get overrrrr, trying to get overrrrrrr, trying to get ooooooooooooovvvveeeerrrrrrrr!!!!!

  • this song brings me alltime laughting, very good song!

  • Oh Yea

  • Too much soul for one man.

  • Kudos for the guys that disliked this. Such amount of stupidity is epic an can only be achieved by birth right or severe alcohol intoxication.

  • @ClerigoPC lol....I'm drinkin' now an I love this! Must be stupidity by birthright :-)

  • Curtis un maestro de la música negra...

  • damn this performance is top quality.

  • wow l love this thanks for posting

  • The standard of what we saw as success those days and even today is still who has the largest amount of cash etc, but we should look at is the type of work involved which the black men employed at the time: support-service-based jobs. That sounds like heavenly dream work of angels and that other dimension dually present but invisible work. The result of the rewards can only be seen after death of the person.

  • Who the fark is the dork who disliked this video?

  • The greatest ever the late CURTIS MAYFEILD WE LOVE U BRAH

  • You know, many people view Curtis Mayfield as your Blaxploitation Icon, maybe at the time that is how it sounded and practiced, but through time specially in our high-tech conscious era, the concept of Superfly can be viewed in a different light signifying and inspiring a different kind of high not related to drugs. It is for all of us to research to deduce the code.

  • @waqoye

Wasn't it Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song that started the whole blaxploitation genre? That music was done by Isaac Hayes - Curtis Mayfield just added the falsetto voice and very specifically sociopolitical lyrics - his work was sort of "mature" blaxploitation music, fully realized - the message had been refined by then, i.e., the need to hustle in an unfair society, the need to get legit once a stockpile had been accumulated, the odds stacked against the poor Black man -

  • @SupernalOne actually earth wind and fire di the soundtrack for sweet sweet badassssss song before they became stars

  • @mjjcng8958

wow, that's news to me - I'll go back and listen

  • Trying to get over! SUPERFLY.

  • one loser doesnt like this huh??

  • @mlhall2003 He confused 'dislike' for 'dis-I-liiiiiike!'

  • Saw them in Boston back in 1972!

  • Hard to understand...do or die take from folks thru life or death...drugs kill...I miss Mr. Curtis Mayfield's message for all of us who may have some kind of addiction. Superfly and Pusherman....

  • Brings back fond memories of my Soul Train Hall of Fame collection. If they only made music like this now. *sighs*

  • "Real Talent"

  • A legend in his own time!!!! Wow he send a powerful message through of his music

    Awesome !!!!!!

  • @MsZag123 & GalaxyGuy12 -- check out JJ Grey and Mofro. For a long time, I've called JJ the white Curtis Mayfield.

  • This is one of my favorite songs ever! Thanks for posting!

  • Curtis Mayfield at the pinnacle. boy did this guy have a singing voice or what?

  • grande grande grande

  • His music is real, what he talks about happens everyday & it can be used as a guide to the streets

  • Magnifico.

  • UNDER RATED.......LET'S GIVE HIM SOME PROPS.....

  • No wonder Curtis wears glasses. His eyes are having a hard time focussing in that super psychadelic enviornment.

  • I'm old enough to remember seeing Curtis perform this on mainstream tv (and Freddie's Dead) when the album dropped---seared an impression on my cerebral cortex which I haven't shaken yet.

    One of the alltime masters

    RIP Curtis

  • DONT PUT NEW MUSIC AND OLD MUSIC AGAINST EACH OTHER APRECIATE WHAT YOU LOVE AND RESPECT THAT OTHERS LIKE WHAT YOU DONT LIKE STILL CURTIS CONTRIBUTION ARE OUTSTANDING NO MATTER

  • You know i dont understand why someone would dislike this song but at the same time im surprized not one ass hole hasent yet. Cause theres always some retard that dislikes a truely beautiful classic.

  • @fullmetalcandy can you please give me a list of names of the artist your talking about?

  • nothing better than this.

  • just a few instruments and tons of talent!!

  • GOD i love this version so raw

  • Totally cool, in fact ice cold!

  • perhaps his signature song.

  • Born in '73 & luvin every second of this FUNK oozing outta my speakers... :0

  • It's Superfly

  • Greg, Try'n get over!!

    ;-)

  • Oh what a tune............legend......

  • Happy Birthday Curtis...wherevere you are ♫♪ June 3

  • we need more of this stuff!

  • Saturday......8:17 PM...beer in lap....cruising the streets....Curtis Mayfield CD......It's gets no better than this maaaaaaaannnnn!!!!

  • @ALADEANs Until you get a open container ticket and dui. I hate alcoholics, nothing personal.

  • @TheTone714 Non taken......not all who drinks acts the same way! Some are cool, calm, and composed......some are violent, arrogant, gives the impression they are fearless, and i hate that. Anyway...it takes one to know one!

    Peace

  • Lord please send us another CURTIS MAYFIELD

  • @MsZag123 There can only be one James Brown, Freddie Mercury, Jimi Hendrix...so too can there be only one Curtis Mayfield. All I can say is THANK YOU to Ice T for introducing me to Curtis......

  • @bubbajoey1967 - I agree with you... BUT... I guess what our friend tried to say is that we could use a new Curtis Mayfield instead of Jonas Brothers, Justin Bibier and heavy shit like that! One way or another, we all agree is that GENIUS is not enough to describe Curtis Mayfield.

  • @MsZag123 -it's over baby girl. god even knows that he would not create another curtis mayfield because the industry has created this new age monster of bullshit & thug life. a genius like curtis should not even be considered to be put in this pot of bullshit that they call music today. i'm 43 & my parents brought us on this great artist. i still blast his music today. this is when music had substance, creativity, passion, love, & a damn meaning, unlike the shit they call muisc today. it's sad.

  • @str8outtatexas1 look man, while I agree Curtis is one in a million in terms of songwriting, there is plenty of music nowadays that rivals and is better than Curtis, not in pop music but in plenty of other genres. That style of negative thinking is what is turning today's music scene into a "new age monster of bullshit/thug life" as you so eloquently put it. Peace brother

  • @MsZag123 If he ever answers your prayer, gimme a shout if he needs a saxophone player. Oh, and you might wanna pray to the Muses, and Dionysos as well.

  • @MsZag123 u aint lyin.

  • @MsZag123 yeah, he can have justin bieber in return

  • @MsZag123 He did, He sent Al Green! In my ears, these two guys were the best of their time. They caught that moment in music history with awesome arrangements and that certain mellow groove. For the jump I liked Wilson Pickett and of course J.B. Nothin' like the 60's and early 70's.

  • @MsZag123 try steve spacek ^^

  • the musicianship was so tight in this performance. good ole barbecued beef spare ribs, 'tato salad, barbecued baked beans and dr. pepper soul!!!!!!

  • rest in peace gentle giant. love me some curtis mayfield music.

  • that's wtf i'm talking about! fried whiting hg fish, string beans, corn on the cob and banana pudding soul!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't swear, so I'll say it this way. Curtis was a heck of a man. Hit #8 in Billboard. God bless!

  • Comment removed

  • Curtis Mayfield was a bad man he could sing live !

  • A legend in his own time!

  • Curtis!!!!

  • ma questa è ricantata sopra!!! sembra addirittura il mio amico PIPPO!!!!!!:D

  • Thanks for posting this one :D

    Curtis is my fave singer/composer

    So underrated imo :(

    Peace

  • @Fjord76 90% of good music is from underrated artists. That's because being underrated means there are no damn shitheads from the damn music industry to chop your fuckin' brains with the: "play like this" and "dress like this" and "I own you" bullshits. It's sad they don't get the recognition and the money they deserve, but it's also good they can focus on the (may sound strange for music industry).. MUSIC!! And this is some fine, sincere, soulful music! Thanks Curtis!

  • @tibyv8 yeah i know,i meant that everybody's speaking about Marvin, Barry White or Al Green(which i also love) and it seems to me that people ain't aware of how much influence Curtis had on the music world (he influenced people like Hendrix, Marley who influenced themselves a lot of people)

  • @Fjord76 i agree. I also feel like people aren't aware of willie hutch either.

  • @Fjord76 u right with mysterious way of leaving like bob

  • @Fjord76 , damn straight, Mayfield was the sh*t back in the mid 70's, his music was in many films during that era. He even starred in a few films himself, with those glasses and that voice, it's hard not to recognize him.

  • Curtis É o CARA!
