why not say he was one of the best artists ever instead of saying he was one of the best 'black' artists ever? color shouldnt matter anymore. white people owe nothing to black people but respect as if they were white or any other color. equal. stop using the race card already, its ignorant and weak.
If you asked Curtis what time is was? . . . .and he replied "why it is six o' clock" . . . it would still sound like he was singing the best song you had ever heard!
The gentle Genius was someone who deserved to have a #1 on The Billboard Pop Charts, and this tune was supposed to be it. Trouble is, People back in 1973 didn't have good taste. I loved the track, if that means anything.
Curtis was so gifted and talented in the arts, composing and even singing with that beautiful voice. I saw SuperFly at the theaters when it came out, the soundtrack blew me away then and still does...another one gone far too soon... pEaCe
The great artists music works whether played live with the studio sweeteners this version kicks ass because of the attitude of his great backing band. Curtis Mayfield was the man and like Marvin, Stevie and many others their music was even epic live because of their humanity and SOUL they bought to their music.
all the movie and 70s versions had a classic appeal - i had to do a remix of this classic and hope that you allow it , its such a smooth pimpish vocal performance. it inspired many a hip hop rapper as well.
Amsterdam, 1973: Popped into a bar for a beer, and they had the Superfly album reel-to-reel. First I had heard it, and wow. Asked for it for Christmas when I got home that year, and Mom got it. Can't imagine Mom asking for it - but the math says she was only 55 then. Long gone now. Yikes. Thanks, Mom, and Curtis, too.
@tubewontletmepost yeah i do because i its so true and hundreds of people agree with it. Thats not including the many messages sent to me directly thanking me for pointing it out.
@187freez 4 deaf ppl maybe? Either that or slight mental retardation? Curtis RULES!! Move on Up is one of the BEST songs ever MADE!!!... this one is good too, of course! ;)
@187freez Peeps that don't feel Curtis M probably were just born or perhaps just don't like his type of music, it sure does not minimize his music one iota. I grew up in the South Bronx and he was just one of many I enjoyed. To each his own, we cannot let others hinder our personal taste in music. Just sayin.

You know, many people view Curtis Mayfield as your Blaxploitation Icon, maybe at the time that is how it sounded and practiced, but through time specially in our high-tech conscious era, the concept of Superfly can be viewed in a different light signifying and inspiring a different kind of high not related to drugs. It is for all of us to research to deduce the code.
Wasn't it Sweet Sweetback's Badass Song that started the whole blaxploitation genre? That music was done by Isaac Hayes - Curtis Mayfield just added the falsetto voice and very specifically sociopolitical lyrics - his work was sort of "mature" blaxploitation music, fully realized - the message had been refined by then, i.e., the need to hustle in an unfair society, the need to get legit once a stockpile had been accumulated, the odds stacked against the poor Black man -
Hard to understand...do or die take from folks thru life or death...drugs kill...I miss Mr. Curtis Mayfield's message for all of us who may have some kind of addiction. Superfly and Pusherman....
I'm old enough to remember seeing Curtis perform this on mainstream tv (and Freddie's Dead) when the album dropped---seared an impression on my cerebral cortex which I haven't shaken yet.

Curtis shall always remain as one of the best black artists ever for various reasons:
1. Owned all his recordings unlike many black artists of that time.
2. Was at the forefront of civil rights movement helping black people.
3. Preached peace and love between black and white even after his own poverty, deprived upbringing.
4. Produced, wrote, performed music and vocals of all his music.
An unbelievable phenomenon. Thank you God for allowing me to see him twice in London live. wow.
RIP.
