You are right. This lens is my favorite one. Super sharp with great color. I rent this lens twice for night time photography including Aurora Borealis (northern light) and other low light environment.
@vanzetti7 This will mount on any crop sensor dslr. The Canon mount of this lens will then work for all the xxxD lineup, which includes your 600D, the xxD lineup and the 7D dslr.
Thank you for the great review. I noticed that when asked about the Nikon 10-24mm, you stated that you prefer that lens. Can you give a bit more information about this. The Nikon is an F/3.5-4.5. From your review, it sounds like you prefer the F/2.8 of the Tokina. From what I have read, the Tokina seems to be a better build. I understand that you get a lot more zoom on the Nikon as compared to the Tokina.
hey man nice review! i have a question, i have D3100 camera and this doesnt have AF motor right. so do u recommend me to sell my camera and get d90 or just buy other lens like 10-24mm nikkor?
Thanks for letting us know it doesn't change in size when you zoom in or out. That was the deciding factor for me because if it did move I would have to re-setup follow focus each time I changed the focal length, but because it doesn't move I don't have to do that and can leave my follow focus set up as it is the entire shoot.
Thanks Tom. Great review. Mate do you have much knowledge on this lens versus the Sigma 8 - 16mm? Obviously the Sigma has some extra width, but a varied aperture won't be so flash in low light.
My application will be mainly commercial real estate, however i'm keen for some big landscapes.
@CharlieLovesYouFilms Maybe it is already to late.... but if you want to use the lens for filming I would definitely recommend you the tokina. I have a 7D and I use the tokina for filming. The 2.8 aperture really helps out a lot if you want to shoot in natural light!
Why nothing is said about chromatic aberration, which is absolutely horrendous in this lens, to the point that it is impossible to properly fix in software.
CA isnt a huge issue on my version, and not a big problem based on other reviews I have come across. CA will also be there when you push out to the super wide lenses, but I dont seem to have CA as bad as what you suggest you have with yours.
How would you compare this against the Tokina 12-24 since it also a UWA lens and has a F4 and is about $200 US cheaper. I have a D90 and I am trying to get a good lens for landscape. Please advice.
I prefer the 11-16 for lanscapes as you get that 1mm extra at 11mm, although not huge, it means that you can shoot at 12mm (and replicate the 12-24) and not be wide open. It also is fast at 2.8 - whereas f4 is pretty standard. This gives the 11-116mm more versatility as you can use it indoors at parties etc. I also have the 24-70 Canon, so Im happy to make do with the gap between 16mm and 24mm.
Does this lens have an issue with vignetting? I shoot mainly sports and I'm trying to decide between the 11-16 or Tamron's 17-50 to go along with my 70-200 2.8.
Not a huge vignetting problem, which is great considering its 11mm. Check out my sample images on Flickr. If you shoot sport I wouldnt think this lens woult be the best option tho...maybe a bit wide? Have you considered the 24-70mm? Do you shoot full frame or a crop body?
@TechStopsHere I shoot on a 7D, so a 1.6 crop. I think a 17-50 would go along well with my 70-200 2.8. I hear Tamron's 17-50 is good, but Sigma makes one that looks nicer. I would like something wide to use for sports or weddings if I wanted to.
For sport the the 11-16 will only be good for full stadium/field shots, and/or group and team shots. So you have to keep that in mind. You'll get some great shots, but its not your everyday sports lens. Its more of a landscape lens.
I just purchased this lens this past weekend and it is indeed quality. I replaced the original cap with a Nikon one since it comes off rather easily. Thumbs up!
I am very interested in this lens but i cant decide which one to get, either this or the Canon 16-35mm f2.8, I have a crop frame cam the T1i. Is the Tokina good for portrait?
you should do a review of the Tokina 16-50mm theres not to many videos out there of that lens.. it seems like a great lens, but i haven’t heard of too many people owning it.
thanx @TechStopsHere. I have the canon $100 50mm ƒ1.8, i bought a great Sigma 28mm ƒ1.8 as well, that is was is on my camera most of the time. I do have an old Tamron 70-300mm with no too good f-stop and it is a bit beat. Where I take most of the pics I can stand in front of the very lo stage and sometimes i get on the stage to photograph from the back. This lens is great to get the whole band in and the audience. I will order it soon and tell you about ti. thanx!
Thats a great canon body. How do you find the video capability? Im looking at upgrading to the 5dm2, however may wait until next year in the hope the mark 3 is released.
Thanks for the review. It is marvellous lens, tack sharp, fast and amazing IQ. I just borrowed one, before buying.
If you have a 77" CPL filter, can you do a review of how it copes with CPL filter.
I am thinking of getting one with Hoya HD (CPL), I am hoping Hoya being the parent company they are matched for each other. (reduced banding of clouds etc).
I use B&W filters, including the CPL. I'll do a review soon (subscribe to my channel so your notified when I post it). B&W made fantastic filters, but they can be expensive.
In the mean time check out some of the photos ive taken with this lens and CPL....links in the above video description box.
I tend to shoot concerts and club gigs at low or no light. The fast and constant ƒ really does it for me. Might wait till it's available at BH since its $50 less, but will have to see what it will run mi with a UV filter (this size filters star high). You review was excellent and has convinced me to pay a little more for a wider aperture. Thanx. Keep up the good work. BTW, could you email me you wallpaper (apple photoshoot) =) Thx!
the F2.8 constant is an excellent feature of this lens, and at 11mm its not mayched by any canon, sigma or tamron lens. However keep in mind its only 11-16mm - will this be enough for you for concert photography? i guess will be great for a full band shot.
