Oh my God... I have to do this for the production of FAME the Musical, and I don't know if I can hold my partner over my head! Amazing dance, though. Majestic and graceful.
Thank you so much for posting this. Norman McLaren and the magic of optical printing. I saw this in college and to this day it dazzles me with it's beauty. Simple light and shadow, soundtrack, and the beauty of human form/movement. Stunning.
@RayOddname Are you sure it's slo-mo? As a former dancer I'd say it looks like real-time to me. Just a slow piece of dancing, but their movements are normal.
@spence900 I'm sorry… now that you make me notice it, it sure is real-time footage! I guess I just wanted to answer to orangeblueandlavenda, 'cause I didn't agree with him about the dancers' "lazyness"…
@RayOddname - Oh goodness, I didn't even see that comment... absolutely right there is no such thing as a lazy ballet dancer! And it is quite as hard to dance slowly as quickly, and often harder. I expect orangeblueandlavenda would not appreciate the Rose Adagio for the athletic feat that it is :-)
@spence900 The "slip printing" that gives it the flow makes parts look slopwer than they are because they take longer than they would, normally printed.
everyone, go to turn me well jason parsons video and theres a song called pas de deux, is that the same song as this one? btw, there dancing in a white room in the video i suggested.
In my early teens, in Athens of the colonels regime, 1967, first year public tv, 5 hours program, B+W, I remember, to my surprise today, it was a sunday, round 5-6 o'clock, i came in contact with the genious of his work, they played the DOTS and PAS DE DEUX..... the best memory in a stressed from the politics life of a child. Thank you Norman.
And years later, in a digital form, not attempting to copy but to cherish this memory i say thank you with a short animation, ENERGY, dedicated to you...
Maurice Blackburn, the main composer of the National Film Board of Canada in the 50's and 60's mixed with pan flute and accompaniment by George Zamfir and Orchestra
It means "step of two" or "dance for two" in French. I have a video of many different Pas de Deux mixed together on my channel if you want to watch and be inspired by this beautiful art form.
I saw a McLaren retrospective in 1984 and remember being stunned by the experience. A quarter of a century later, Pas de Deux still stuns and inspires.
I remember seeing this in 1969 at a late-night art film show in Toronto. It blew me away then as it does now. It is interesting to note that neither computers nor video was used... it is all film.
Yes but with optical printer, Mc Laren was one of the first if not the first to use optical printer for artistic purposes and not trick photography or surimpression (in this case it surimpressions, sometimes as much as a dozen)
I first saw this in high school in 1976 and was amazed by it. I am so pleased to have found it again after 30 years and to be able to show it to my children.
Thanks for posting a fairly good version of it. Would you happen to know where I can find the movie "Lodela" or "Danse et Cinéma" from Gilles Péloquin?
This film is so incredible! I want to make something like it! Do you know of any other dance films that use stunning optical illusions and play with time/narritive the same way?
