@goddamneclectic Nah it was from Rain Dogs in1985. So even if it were an unused song from HA&V, it probs would've appeared on Swordfishtrombones rather than Rain Dogs.
'Ambulatory locomotion of the recipient of the bum's rush, involuntarily emulating a Flamenco dancer by dint of being simultaneously propelled forward and elevated at the seat of one's pants with one hand, and the scruff of one's neck with another. The expression recalls the supposed "custom of pirates, in the Spanish Main, of forcing prisoners wo walk while holding them by the neck so that their toes barely touched the deck."
I was listening to T.W in the seventies. While most of what I listened to then sounds a bit naive to me now the music of Tom Waits has lost none of its significance. If anything it's influence just keeps growing
For some reason I love that ending line where he says "even jesus wanted a little more time, when he was walking spanish down the hall" lol. Amazing song. Love it. But then again I have a hard time finding songs from Tom that I don't like. All I can really say is he's the best . I think he's incapable of writing bad music.
@gutaschlussel Horses can be trained to "walk spanish". They kick their legs out in front. It's what someone who was trying to run away but is being held on both arms, say by two officers escorting him the electric chair, might look like.
@kidcreole77 We do this song in our set, I always wondered what I was singing about, lol! My thought on 'his glass was full of sand' is that if an optimist says the glass is half full and the pessimist says it's half empty, if you think yours is full of sand you've got to be in a bad way...
(1) Walking (someone) Spanish- To force someone to leave, usu. from a public place, by lifting him by his coat or shirt collar to a walking position and propelling him toward the door (Source: Dictionary Of American Slang, Wentworth/ Flexner). Being in the act of doing something you don't want to do. Go to Tom Waits Library lyrics section for more detail.@BackToTheBlues
His geniosity,is almost comparable to his generosity to gift us mindblowing songs.

May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties' Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this track.

I cant tell if he makes more money off his music or off suing the big ass companies that try to use his music without permission.

Dim the lights on Broadway = electric chair?
Love this song, anyway.

@BackToTheBlues Glass is full of sand i think refers to an hour glass, or cutting life short. It's talking about an execution.
ta2rtist13 7 months ago
@ta2rtist13 I never thought of an hourglass. It's a clever bit of writing. As Ian Dury said "there ain't half been some clever b*stards.."
