I like both versions, Hiatt's and Mandy's. Hiatt's version has the ingredient of a classic and incomparable to Mandy's but I commend Mandy Moore for bringing this old forgotten song to life. I like listening to both.
I like John Hiatt's version and Mandy's but for what I wanted it for, posting as encouragment to my bf, Mandy's version works better. I don't think it means either artist is "better" just that sometimes different interpretations emphasize different meanings or stress different emotions from the same lyrics and perhaps should be apreciatted for those different aspects/reasons.
I prefer this cover version to the original, Mandy Moore does a brilliant job on vocals, i also prefer this production . It doesn't always work out that the original is best, i'm also a massive fan of the late 60's UK band Free but find Gary Moore's rendition of their song Wishing Well superior.

What a lot of people don’t realize or know is that she put a lot of risk in her career for the coverage album. She actually had to hide the production from the record company because she knew they wouldn’t allow her to do it. Instead make her do a pop album. And she didn’t want to do that anymore.
This however didn’t last long, and about half way through they found out. However, because it was almost done they said okay we’ll allow you to finish. After this album however, we’re dropping you. And, that’s what they did.
I'm sick and tired of people saying this version sucks compared to John Hiatt’s original version. To those who say that, think about this, if Hiatt thought Mandy couldn’t do it as good or better as he did it he wouldn’t have given her permission to cover it. Now yes you can have your opinion on whose is better. However, don’t go poorly commenting on her for trying her hardest to show respect for a legendary singer/songwriter.
Just thought that you should know-Once a song is written and published anybody who wants to can cover it without the composers permission can do so. The owner of the copywrite gets paid no matter who records it but it can be covered by whoever wants to.

Just thought that you should know-Once a song is written and published anybody who wants to can cover it without the composers permission can do so. The owner of the copywrite gets paid no matter who records it but it can be covered by whoever wants to.

@rwwilson21 You don't need an artist's permission to cover a song. Once a work has been commercially released, anyone can cover it. You just have to pay the statutory royalty rate, currently $0.09 per copy sold.

If he doesn't give permission they'll change the instruments and 1 word in the lyrics and produce it themselves without his permission. Yes this is a John Hiatt song and I love his version. Mandy Moore did a great job on this song though. She did this CD (Coverage) for all the songs which inspired her as a singer. It is a great CD!
