Experience scaled with your level in D&D 3rd edition (and 4th?).

Change seems pretty abusive when you always get enough turns to wipe out foes before they can act.

Aren't we just making it easier for Granorg to get through the mine by removing all the rocks? Heh.

  • HAHA HCBAILEY IS AWESOME

  • Army of Darkness reference 3:02?

  • Lost Odyssey scaled experience too... we the viewers really need to find a way to donate a 360 to HC.

  • 15:21 look at Rosch's expression haha

  • Watching this late, I was gonna say Pokemon Black/White but it was already mentioned.

  • pokemon, has done this exp scaling in black and white, and I think they had it in diamond pearl as well.

  • @HazreihelUchiha No, the exp scaling is new to black and white. It damn time they did it, to be honest.

  • @CastlePokemetroid Ah, I didn't get a chance to play a 4th gen as I did 3rd gen, so I was really glad they changed it for 5th. :D

  • @HazreihelUchiha It makes life soooo much easier, I'll tell you this much.

However, Gamefreak compensated for that by increasing the levels you need to evolve the newer pokemon.

Instead of the majority of the pokemon getting their final forms in the 30 range, it's now around in the 50 range, which is really annoying, since it already obsoletes the exp scaling.

The only real difference the scaling makes is that the older pokemon are easier to level.

  • @CastlePokemetroid well that's not all that bad, as once you have access to the dark grass outside the north east town you can get a pokemon from 1-40 in about 5 minutes.

  • @HazreihelUchiha I still find it annoying that these pokemon with only a single evolve form needs to be level 50 to evolve. That's ridiculous.

Only pokemon with two evolve forms should take that high of a level to evolve.

Vulaby evolves at level 54? I almost shat myself when I first saw that. That's way too high for something that should evolve at level 32. Not only that, but a whole list of pokemon evolve at extreme levels.

The higher evolving levels definitely obsoletes the level scaling.

  • as axemranger said a lvl 8 character can shoot straight to 50 in few high (60+/-) lvl battles if there is ever a need to

  • The Suikoden series has experience scaling as well.

  • 11:08 The .hack series does this. I remember Persona 3 and 4 also did exp scaling.

  • I was really expecting you to say, "Have a good day viewers....IF YOU CAN! MUAHAHAHA"

  • HCBaily, I must say thank you and damn you for introducing me to one of the best games I've ever played. Thank you because this game is awesome, damn you because I don't want to think of the hours I've spent on the game, and will probably continue to do so.

  • what you're describing in experience is also done in the .hack series video games. it takes 1000 exp to level no matter what level you are at. Experience isn't divided and it's done per character.

  • Haha, Army of Darkness reference!

  • is the experience scaling the same as suikoden ?

  • I'm not convinced Rosch is experience-scaling. His goes up by more than the others since at higher levels, you need more to get to the next. So a given amount of EXP is a higher portion of the difference between 10 and 11 than it is for 16 and 17 or whatever.

  • @ff2paladin Look closely at 10:33 and pause. Above the EXP bar and to the right, it shows the number of experience points each party member will receive, and then it counts down to zero as it fills the bars. Here, Stocke and Raynie both got 116 XP each and Rosch got 243 XP. That's more than double.

  • @HCBaily Maybe they see Melting Snow as something holy because they do live in a very dry, almost desert world that water can be scarce?

  • the only thing i dont like about this game so far is that it seems like the camera is too close and you cant see very far ahead and then i would get lost.

  • Pretty cruel of you HC, an earthquake AND a cliffhanger at the end =P

  • The entire Suikoden series scales experience this way.

  • those tnt barrels want me to do a barrel roll

  • HCbailly favorite quote "And they died..."

  • @SuperGreatmonkey I actually guessed that was gonna happen

  • arc rise fantasia has a very nice exp scale system

  • Hey HCBailly, I know you've been buying everything on screen, but I've messed up the purchases almost every single time. If you could also put that in the video description again that would be great :)

  • @nels00 I have in my text walkthrough on GameFAQs.

  • @HCBailly Great. You mentioned it, but is slipped my mind.

  • @HCBailly Would the Custom Lance even be worth purchasing at all? I ask because it seems more efficient to just skip it seeing as how Rosch is already very close to Stocke's Attack Power even at this low level. Also, the massive upgrade you can get from a certain event happening VERY soon.

  • @MisterCrim It's not critical. I figured that I had the money, so why not? After this point, money won't be a problem.

  • @HCBailly That's interesting. I can't seem to hold on to money in this game because I end up having to spend it all on either Mana restoring items or Mana crystals. Have you noticed if stat allocation is different each playthrough? I seem to have a lot more trouble with bosses than you do and I tend to be about 5 levels higher than you are going with, so I'm wondering if that would be why. I'm an RPG gamer primarily so I don't think my skill level is a factor.

  • Suikoden scaled the experience so that weaker characters could catch up to the main group within a few battles. There are some points where you can have a level 3 character gain 15 levels in one fight so that they quickly catch up to the other characters. It's one of the good things about the game when it comes to having so many characters to choose from.

  • I noticed that Fantasy Online scales the experience in a similar way, there is an exp multiplier if the monster is enough levels higher than you are. On the downside, you stop gaining exp entirely from monsters that are 10 levels lower than you are.

  • My characters are around level 20, I'm at the part where you collect firewood in sh and where you go to battle with the thaumachines on gran plain in ah. Should I grind? If so, to what level? Great vid as always HC :D

  • the way the 2 timelines affect each other is because stocke is in two places at once

  • @cobaltscarf That can't be, because else Stocke would meet with himself when he's making the original decision, whether to go with Rosch or stay with Heiss.

  • @whattheblox not necessarily i have an explanation but it would take more than 500 letters

  • @cobaltscarf Stocke's mind gets transferred between timelines, not his body.

In short, only his experiences time travel, not necessarily himself. It is not possible for him to be in two places at once, because he only has one mind and one body.

Not only that, but Ranie and Marco don't time travel. Only Stocke does. There's no way they can be in two places at once as well.

  • Well a bit of spoiler but the entire reason Stocke isn't leading anything is so he can remain in the shadows and work the White Chronicle's powers relatively unnoticed. The game goes to lengths to stress this point in a few of the endings as well as his assuming alias' later on in the story keeping his identity shielded from the Black Chronicle's Wielder..

  • So does this game have superbosses like Final Fantasy? Like a boss thats severely powerful to test your mettle?

  • @RoadlessEnt

    Yup.

  • @Cronauron AWESOME :D

  • I've forgive a lot of timeline nonsense for a great game... which this actually seems to be. I'm surprised I'd never heard of it before, it seems really fun and well-put-together.

  • I can't live without my word of the day....

  • my money is on them getting separated.

  • I don't know if this is a spoiler, but there are cockatrices in this game. They are the purple flame chickens later on in the game.

  • Actually, another game series which, in my opinion, did trhe experience gain system pretty well is the Suikoden series. Sure, every levels take 1000 EXP to gain a level, but the experience calculation depends on your character's levels and the enemy's strength. For example, bringing a low level character against end-game enemies will net him a TON of levels! I guess Radiant historia also does a pretty good job to bring low level chars to the point of your other chars.

  • paper mario's leveling system is alot like this game

  • HC, have you played Suikoden? The first game in that series scaled experience similarly to this game.

  • @JeffroTheMan1 Actually, all of the games do this. It's just a little less apparent in some of the newer ones. :P

  • HC, if you want another game that scales EXP then try Growlanser Generations. Growlanser has the best darn strategy RPG battle system I have ever seen.

Growlanser Generations is a package set of the 2nd and 3rd games in the series. The 1st and 4th were never translated. Also, the first 3 actually relate to each other. 3 is a prequel, but the 2nd game takes place exactly six months after the events of the first game, but from a new character's perspective. Don't worry about not playing 1 tho

  • I watched this video and realized the music had some similarities with the kingdom hearts soundtrack. The music in this LP is amazing which adds to the effect of the game for me.

  • I'll add the .hack series as an example of scaling experience, but it's somewhat interesting because it was only level differences that affected the experience--at least for the first four.

  • I'm sure this has been mentioned elsewhere in the comments, but the new Pokemon games use the same EXP scaling method.

  • WAIT A MINUTE! There are coacatrices in this game, their the fiery green chickens and they can stone you :P

  • @HCBailly Atlus did the same thing in the persona series with the exp scaling

  • Suikoden had Scaled XP as well. It was really easy to revisit an old dungeon, and have your big guys carry your little guys until they were ready to fight for themselves.

  • Why does some random grunt have a powerful sword? I guess since soliders have to buy their own stuff, he must be rather wealthy or spent all the allowence on the sword.

  • @ZergofImportance That sword ain't crap. When I first got it, I had absolutely no use for it.

Besides, the Aistel sword is standard stuff for Aisetl soldiers.

  • Word of the day: Circumvent

  • I love how nonchalant Stocke is at the end. "Damn. A cave in. Oh well, whatever I guess."

  • @HCBailly, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying about the experience scaling. Does the amount of experience you receive from an enemy decrease the higher you get in level, kind of like in MMORPGs? If you fight a level 1 enemy at level 1 you get 10 exp but if you fight it at level 2 you only get 5 exp?But does it also take more experience each level you gain? For example from level 1 to 2 it takes 100 exp, then from level 2 to 3 it takes 200 exp. Sorry to ask but it's not on gamefaqs.

  • @ashugart Yeah. When you're at a higher level, enemies will give less experience. This is done per character, so Rosch being in an overleveled party doesn't hurt him.

  • @HCBailly I'm a bit confused, so we went to the Heiss timeline and saved the merchant, but we went back in time altered the course of history where we went to the Rosch timeline, in which we never saved the merchant?

Yet the merchant is still saved, so does that mean the merchant would remember Stocke and the others at all? Do they ever actually explain this either?

  • @ashugart More specifically, in Radiant Historia, enemies in an area (at certain times in the story) have a level "cap" of sorts with XP. Using Alma Mine as an example, you'll notice Roasch is gaining about 240 XP or so from the battles while everyone else is getting about 110 or so. Rosch will continue to gain this amount until about lvl 14 or 15 at which time it will decrease to match the others. It works really well for this game and eliminates the need to grind lower characters.

  • @MisterCrim thanks!

  • Each time you say marco, i scream pole

  • @HCBailly You can only leave before you talk to the spy there. Once you tlak to him, you stuck there. But you can still leave just fine before that

  • Experience in this game is like in Dungeons and Dragons then, Enemies give a person experience based on what enemies it is, as well as the character's level in relation to them. :3

  • It's a load-bearing cave!

  • Isn't a basilisk a cockatrice? :o

  • @ShyBoy6D9 Other way around actually, A Cockatrice is a form of Basilisk.

  • If you are at all curious HC Dragon Quest IX also scales exp to give lower level characters more exp.

  • Experience also scaled in a similar way in FFXI. Though... it was kinda messed up how you had to be pretty skilled just to be able to kill a monster that checked as an "even match", especially at higher levels.

  • The first and second Paper Mario also implement a similar experience system.

  • That cliffhanger was pure evil.

  • HCBaily, most of Atlus' games scale experence like this one. For that reason and the fact that you their games need you to use strategies makes them one of my game companies

  • The experience scaling is definiatly inspired by the Shin Megami Tensei series, the first game to ever do it. Although not as perfectly as Radiant Historia, that is true.

  • @SilimsLetsPlays

Frankly, I don't buy it. I've been playing RPGs for over 20 years, and exp-scaling goes back to early 90s and probably precedes videogame rpgs altogether. What is your actual basis for claiming SMT did it first? Game, date, article?

  • @JohnRayJr SMT is, in fact, a 20 year old series. If you haven't noticed, this is the internet - just google if you want to find a source. If you're feeling lazy, look it up in wikipedia, I'm sure there's something on it there as well. SMT was the first videogame to have scaling exp - though it was more of a diminishing return to punish overgrinding at first - and that's it.

  • @SilimsLetsPlays

I know how old SMT is. I was there. I did in fact google it before I posted my comment.

So basically, you're just talking out of your ***. Get back to me when you actually have some evidence. It's the internet, so I'm sure you won't have too much trouble.

  • "We are the melting snow...!" Well-----I guess you can easily overcome the enemy if they're laughing at you :/.

  • In regard to your comments about the scaling of the experience system, I believe the Suikoden series have a similar feature.

  • @nidhoggg1

They do, but since there are 108 characters, the scaling is much, much stronger. For example, probably would have gained three levels from that first battle, not one.

  • 15:23 lol hornier, that was twice as funny for some reason, now that you mention Aht does remind me of Eiko, hopefully not too much like her that she'll call someone a bimbo out of jealously like Eiko did,lol that's still surprising to me ^_^

  • You do a great impression of evil Lord Kefka too.

  • Could you show the equipment setup in the video description?

  • "We are the melting snow!"? That's the worst battle cry I've ever heard. I prefer the battle cry from the Immortal New Reign :

"We are the vengence of souls went in silence,

We are the rage of the heaven in flames,

We are the pride of the earth's holy dyin',

We are the angel's immortal new reign!"

  • Nice cliffhanger, HCBailly. :D

  • @HCBailly Did you know that if the enemy you are targeting is at the bottom of the screen you can press the down direction to go to the top in one move instead of two? Yeah, I know it's not much of an improvement but it sure is a time saver.

  • why does this videos end so fast??? also i knew he was going to cliffhang there

  • When you pushing those barrels around I was thinking to myself, "Why doesn't he just roll those barrels?...wait...DO A BARREL ROLL, HCBAILLY!" But then I remembered the barrels are filled with explosives.

  • @Begaria But that just makes it all the more amusing.

  • There are so cockatrices in this game. I just fought one the other day while getting a certain 'mark' if distinction, if ya know what I mean.

  • Damn you, Henri Cliffhanger Bailly!

  • @TrueSoreThumb isnt his name harris or something....

  • hcbailly will you ever lp a link to the past? most of the lps already out are either speed runs or not that good :P

  • Pokémon BW nailed the Exp. system too, maybe a little too well though (easy level 1 -> 40 jumps in some cases)

  • video+ minecraft/skyrim= instant like

  • That is my new battle cry WE ARE THE MELTED SNOW

  • HCBailly, I bet your happy about the Bears getting that big win over the weekend. The Bears are really dangerous if Cutler gets some protection

  • The Suikoden games (at least 1 and 2) have a good way to balance the Exp & Level too =]

  • @Filipe304 Suikoden 3 and 4 also do this. Underleveled characters catch up very quickly.

  • I am addicted to this Lp -_-

  • Ok. Quantum physics dump to try and explain what's happening with the game's time travel mechanic based on what i think is happening. To use a metaphor, let's take a river and a rolling bridge. Each bank will be a timeline and the bridge will be the chronicles and their wielders. Things affected on one bank can travel across the bridge in part due their being a third timeline with it's own baggage and affect the other side. So if you remove the Black Chronicle's influence on side, both banks are

  • HCBailly, how does it feel to do recording like this as compared to all your other LP's?

  • @ytilaud I've gotten used to it. It does take longer to edit the videos this way, though.

  • The Suikoden series scales experience somewhat like that. Which is a God-send since there are so many characters and sometimes you have to bring off the wall people to main quests.

  • @HCBailly if you ever do an LP of Lufia Ruins of Lore when you return to Parlacyte with Dekar you may want to throw in a clip for Steiner shaking his hands at Zidane

  • HCBailly, you could just enter the Alma Mine node, but walk out of the mines before continuing forward, as compared to entering through the start point again. Seems like a faster way to clear the side quests. Just an FYI.

  • @lecmg No, remember I showed that when I first got to the Alma Mine? Stocke basically said he couldn't leave.

  • @HCBailly The invisible plot wall barring you from the outside doesn't pop up until you walk up to the agent and initiate the cutscenes. You can actually walk out of the mine immediately after you teleport to the node

  • @HCBailly I took my game out of storage and tested this out again. You could teleport to the node and still exit as it would drop you exactly at the entrance of the mine, but not directly into the plot. As long as you don't proceed forward to continue with talking to the contact and exit the moment you teleport to that node, you can still do the side quests.

  • @HCBailly If you make the correct decision, you can then leave the mines before traveling deeper into them.

  • Awesome cliff~hanger HC.

  • Do a barrel roll!

  • I know you don't play Pokemon, HCBailly, but Pokemon Black and White does the same thing with experience as this game does. It's very handy~

  • @KirbyChan Very true.

  • 13 didnt appear in the box? aww too bad

  • Oh good, It would seem that my sub box is working again.

  • I like how you avoid spoilers enough to keep us viewers interested.

    :-)

  • Is there maybe a Minecraft reference in the title? °O°

  • waiting all day for next part:) great work Bailly
