If you guys are wondering why Phil "calls," on the turn and folds the river is because he already thinks Bob has made his flush on the turn. He's thinking if the board pairs he can make a full house which beats the flush. Since the Queen came out, he just flat out thought he was crushed.
I don't get Phil's play. If he doesn't plan on check/calling the river, why doesn't he lead out with a pot controlling bet, say around 2.5k? If you get raised, you're either getting an abnormal bluff by some old chump, or he has you crushed. If you bet out, you might even get him to flat call with a low flush, whereas if you check, he'd make a much larger bet with the exact same small flush. I'm puzzled, Phil.
So why make a bad call on the turn if he thinks the guy has the flush alread? He's thinking he's a 4 to 1 dog and he makes a call for 2.5 to 1. He really thinks he's going to stack some old guy nit if he fills up on the river? Implied odds don't dictate a call and the pot odds weren't right for him to call. The only way he should have called is if he thought he could have been good. Which means he shouldn't have planned on c/f'ing the river. Either that or he felt like spewing chips away.
i really have no idea what was going through the old guy's head on that hand. the whole table was in on the hand and galfond bets into all of them. theres no way he has the best hand with 7's, so what was his plan: wait for a heart to hit and bluff at it when there couldve been other people with hearts?
Has less to do with who wants it more and more to do with who doesn't understand the value of their hand, and who can make a proper read on a known fish. The straight draw got there, the flush draw got there, and a known chaser bets at a draw hit, pretty standard fold, really. Phil Galfond would destroy Bob Bright under any circumstances given any decent amount of time
when a guy bets 75% of the flop at those stakes with that size pot and you got trips, you call. period.
