ever have questions about your pedals like how to get that sound you want, what to use to mad your pedal, or even how a chorus is different from a flange? the Junkie is the one to ask!! "Like" the pedal junkie today!!
@FenrisRagnaroek What is that supposed to mean? If you want distortion, this is not going to give a good sound because it is an overdrive pedal. If you want overdrive, it has plenty.
Turn the drive up all the way and tone where ever to get a pretty cool thrash metal sound, I think. I play it through a 50 watt '67 Fender Bassman with a 2000 Squier Standard Strat. It's not as cool as fuzz, I guess, but super overdrive is more affordable by $60. I play mostly blues rock.
If u turn up your guitar along with a 50 watt tube amp and volume on the pedal turned less than half, it kicks ass for most anything. Turn the drive up all the way and tone where ever to get a pretty cool thrash metal sound, I think. I play it through a '67 Fender Bassman with a 2000 Squier Standard Strat. It's not as cool as fuzz, I guess, but super overdrive is more affordable by $60. I play mostly blues rock.
This is my favorite metal pedal. You just gotta put its drive at 4/10, level cranked, tone 4/10 or 5/10, run it into a tube amp with a fair bit of drive on it. Badass tone.
Hello, all. This is kind of a stupid question, but I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to pedals. I'm looking for a pedal that provides distortion, but also gives me a variety of sounds (think of Weezer, Green Day, Replacements, etc.). The catch is that I need one that's between like 30 and 50 bucks. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!
I'm thinking of using this pedal for more so a booster than an overdrive pedal. I've heard some positive and negative thoughts about it. I think it would work well added to an already high gain(high drive, already overdriven amp, etc. Whichever floats your boat) amplifier though. Any tips or comments?
my guitar not the expensive one(suitable for beginner like me). . .but im planing to use this Boss SD-1 pedal..im wondering how is the sound going to be..is the sound going to be like the quality guitar?
as for the tube screamer type thing i personally use a boss od-3 it does the job really well :] i do like the soft clippin on this tho its rather nice :]
hey man i play blink 182 all the time, i just got the pedal today, and yea its almost perfect, its doest have a lot of distortion but it sounds just right
yep, i have one and turning up the drive and tone reminds me of blink, sounds really similar to the "solo" riff on anthem I , dammit intro and that "i wish it hasnt been so bad" (i cant remember the name,,,its in enema...mutt i guess ...) anyway, yeah, go for it,
Of course this pedal isn't good for metal because it's an OVERDRIVE pedal, that's like saying OMG I crank my tube amp and it's not good for jazz. Of course not, you need a solid state amp, like a Roland Jazz Chorus. If you want something for metal buy a DISTORTION pedal... or use this to boost an already distorted signal... OMG...
... overdrive is distortion, Distortion is when the signal is clipped to a point of no return. overdrive is a softer clipping from when you OVERDRIVE and Op-amp
so overdrive is just describing how you get distortion...noob
@ChrisONGuitar1 Man, technicalities aside. If you've done further reading of how overdriving an amp makes a signal heavier or softer, good for you then. But don't call me a noob. I'm just being practical; Overdrive = Soft clipping, Distortion = Hard clipping. Overdrive: good for blues, rock, etc. Rubish for metal. It's as simple as that. You don't need to be an electrical engineer, nor do you need to know much about how an amp works. It's just guitarrists' common sense.
@FanHalen5150 Would it? Then you would very much depend on the amp's tone. A ballsy amp will definitely give you a good metal tone if boosted with an overdrive pedal, won't it? But we're talking about amps like Mesa Boogie or Marshall kind of thing, right? I don't think you'd get a proper metal tone out of a Fender or Vox overdriven amp and boosted with an SD-1 overdrive for example. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I love learning about amps, pedals and stuff.
@xxxxneoxxxx I bought this one to boost my valveking and it's incredible! OD is a very good way to make a great metal tone even better, but it doesn't really generate a metal tone on its own
This thing is GREAT for metal as long as you know how to use it. Use it on a distorted channel and it screams. Just be careful because it causes alot of hiss but you can get used to it and turn the pedal off and on during breaks. hard to explain
I agree, with an already distorted amp it will add punch. I just don't want anybody disappointed thinking this alone will give them a "metal sound" although I use it through a clean channel and love the sound it produces for rock and blues. In fact, I took my DS1 out of my line and only use the SD1
If you buy this for metal you will be disappointed. This is an overdrive pedal which simulates an overdriven tube amp before the days of distortion pedals. The sound is great but don't expect any heavy distortion. I have a DS1 distortion pedal that sounds awsome but I bought it in 1986 and I've heard that the newer ones have a different sound but I can't imagine they're all that different. Boss all the way, I've been playing for 25 years and they've Never let me down.
totally man- boss is good for time based effects and some OD, but when it comes to distoriton EHX is the way to go. I've got the metal muff too and it just kicks ass. I used to have a boss OS-2, thought it sounded ok, but when i plugged in the metal muff i couldnt believe my ears.
ye youre right. but 2 days ago ive made some home recording with my gain pumped at full power :D:D and the recording sounded like blues -.-. so you lose a lot of gain during recording
the ds1 and sd1 are good for live playing but somethimes you realy need a lot a lot of gain... but then you will need a NS efect

@gusselinius Since when is it spelled snoop? Snopp is the correct way to spell it, you don't even pronounce snoop anything like snopp, it's just like snoop dogg, or snoopy.

I wouldent use it for grunge but, This pedal is a great boost pedal for a muff or any distortion really, I use it to boost a DS-1, DS-2 and Metalzone, but you'll probably want to mod it.
its great to kick in infront of a tube amp distortion too. fucking incredible for solos and heavey grunge stuff in that sense...good fuzz boost too, but u have to do that on the clean channel which is annoying cus fuzz pedals sound shit in distorted amp channels. just thort id share that with u lol...dunno why particularly, u seem NICE
Actually no. As a booster, you want it after the distortion pedal. Placing it before the distortion pedal just increases the gain (might as well just increase the gain on the ML-2). After, increases the output volume.
Certainly not this one. You may want to look at distortion and fuzz pedals instead of overdrive pedals. Check out the Crunchbox by MI Audio. There are some clips on YouTube. It is crunchy and very versatile - covers a lot of bases.
You are welcome, and see the comment above about tuning - my apologies. As for the single coils vs. buckers, that is very interesting. Hammetallica92 2 years ago
Basically: you play your amp with some distortion.
Then, when you want a boost, you press the pedal (with a tiny bit distortion and the level quite high)
this will boost the signal, giving you lots more sustain, volume, overdrive and you can adjust the tone too.
Nameless742 2 years ago
thats a great explanation. its perfect for solos or more expressed riffing. you can cut out a lot of mud and other junk with this pedal too.

The SD-1 would be a great boost pedal if you had a high gain amp already. I have a modded one that I use with my Mesa.
For straight up metal sound on a SS amp:
EH Metal Muff (it replaced my Metal Zone)
Boss Metalcore
Boss Metal zone
Stay away from the Boss Mega Distortion.
the Metal Muff is more versatile, it can go from bluesy rock to death metal. the metal core pedal is also decent if you prefer Boss.
I sold my Metal Zone and got a Metal Muff to use with my practice amp. Get the Metal Muff
