Check Wikipedia for "Reg Kehoe and his Marimba Queens". It has lots of info on this clip. And yes: it is reversed... it is a so called "Soundie", a 1940's equivalent of a YouTube clip. :D
@mkarnerfors "And yes: it is reversed" Hi, not trying to be a clever git or anything, but if by reversed you mean played backwards, it's can't be because at 0:59 seconds the bass falls into Franks hand, and if it was reversed it would raise up from his hand!...... if I got the wrong end of the stick ignore this post... :o)
Believe this or not, my dad actually dated one of those marimba queens! I still have a picture of him with that zany bass player taken on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. I thought he was kidding me when he told me about this band and dating one of the musicians until years after his death, I caught this clip on TV somehow. They were definitely one of a kind, that's for sure! Thanks for posting this.
@michaeljayklein : Frank di Nunzio,sr = zany bass player. The bass was custom made from sheet metal. Note, Frank's son has an account here on youtube ...he is Frank diNuzio, Jr. small world, eh?
I play slap bass and it is possible to get slap tripplets overhand while getting the notes. I have only seen one other bass player besides myself play the overhand slap tripplet. I love the back off the bass slap also. Great stuff. :)
The video was reversed on purpose. This clip was called a "soundie" and was played back on a machine called a panoram. The image was shot onto a mirror then onto a screen. When viewed this way, the image was corrected.
That's a wonderful clip! However, if you watch listen to the bass part carefully you'll hear notes that could not possibly be produced by what the bass player is doing onscreen. I think they just wanted some extra visual dazzle.
As explained on Wikipedia: soundies often recorded audio and video separately. The bassplayer most likely could go nuts like that and still play it... it's just that what we see here is not recorded at the same time as the audio and therefore they are sometimes desynced.
That's a wonderful clip! However, if you watch listen to the bass part carefully you'll hear notes that could not possibly be produced by what the bass player is doing onscreen. I think they just wanted some extra visual dazzle.
The bass player could only do one song per night. By the way, stickwithahit is correct - the video tape was inserted BACKWARDS. All of the marimbas have "reverse" keyboards.
The "soundies" were originally viewed through a contraption that used a mirror, and thus would reverse the image - to correct it, they were "produced" backwards.
The reason it's reversed is that the film was made as a 'soundie' for a panoram machine, a sort of early video jukebox. Try w,w,w,.soundies,DOT,net for more details. In order to get the correct distance from film to screen in a small machine it was projected through a series of mirrors, so it has to start out backwards. The reason the music doesn't always seem to match is that the soundtrack wasn't in sync with the picture on the film, and was dubbed on slightly ahead
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
And it's all reversed. Bass player is not left handed, and the keys on the marimbas are reversed too. Old film that was posted in reverse- like looking in a mirror. Interesting
My daughter came to me and begged for me to watch this. She was laughing until she cried from the next room for 40 minutes. The other people's comments were part of the fun. Now I understand why. Thanks for sharing! P.S. Check out the lady that shakes those marracas.
The bassist's name is Frank DeNunzio Sr. Apparently he just died in 2006. That guy is an animal. Check out Milt Hinton for more upright bass slap stuff
This clip is backwards...ie bass player playing with wrong hand, marimbas are the wrong way. High notes should be to audience left, not audience right...Funny what putting the film in backwards will do...
Meh, lots of upright string players played that way back then. Just check out any video of harp players rom the 30's/40's (Marx brothers, Three Stooges, et al).
The dude in the video isn't doing anything on that bass in any way related to the song. I doubt he's an actual bass player at all, prob'ly just some wild and crazy dude from Central Casting.
Actully, the film is flipped, the marimbas are backwards. When playing one, the higher notes should be on the players right hand, and to the viewers left side.
