  • Not reversed but mirrored

  • This what heaven is like

  • Those hometown faces with the mallets had some hot bodies.

  • Check Wikipedia for "Reg Kehoe and his Marimba Queens". It has lots of info on this clip. And yes: it is reversed... it is a so called "Soundie", a 1940's equivalent of a YouTube clip. :D

  • @mkarnerfors "And yes: it is reversed" Hi, not trying to be a clever git or anything, but if by reversed you mean played backwards, it's can't be because at 0:59 seconds the bass falls into Franks hand, and if it was reversed it would raise up from his hand!...... if I got the wrong end of the stick ignore this post... :o)

  • @mkarnerfors Oops... got it now, viewed from behind... ok I never was over bright...:o)

  • can somebody tell me why the low notes are to the right?

  • @jukuro9898

The footage is most likely flipped.

  • @jukuro9898

These were "jukebox films" & viewed on a back projection system, popular in the US in the early 40s

  • @jukuro9898

These were "jukebox films" & viewed on a back projection system so would be seen the right way round. popular in the US in the early 40s

  • Yes!!! My drum teacher... it's true.

  • is that the go compare guy on bass?

  • Niech bas razi was, razi was prądem!

  • I could watch this video all day. Super great.

  • Believe this or not, my dad actually dated one of those marimba queens! I still have a picture of him with that zany bass player taken on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. I thought he was kidding me when he told me about this band and dating one of the musicians until years after his death, I caught this clip on TV somehow. They were definitely one of a kind, that's for sure! Thanks for posting this.

  • @michaeljayklein

my Mom was a Marimba Queen! just kidding

  • No, the drummer needs to be in THIS Band. Fuuuuuuunny

  • Wotta bunch o' cuties! Those girls look like a lot of fun!

  • I play slap bass and it is possible to get slap tripplets overhand while getting the notes. I have only seen one other bass player besides myself play the overhand slap tripplet. I love the back off the bass slap also. Great stuff. :)

  • i EXPECTED AN ALL GAY GUY BAND!

  • Gay weren't invented back then :D

  • wooh great , check the awesome bass

  • Fantastic. Every aspect of this is amazing and lush.

I turned on MTV the other day... it wasn't half as exciting as this.

  • The video was reversed on purpose. This clip was called a "soundie" and was played back on a machine called a panoram. The image was shot onto a mirror then onto a screen. When viewed this way, the image was corrected.

  • That's a wonderful clip! However, if you watch listen to the bass part carefully you'll hear notes that could not possibly be produced by what the bass player is doing onscreen. I think they just wanted some extra visual dazzle.

  • As explained on Wikipedia: soundies often recorded audio and video separately. The bassplayer most likely could go nuts like that and still play it... it's just that what we see here is not recorded at the same time as the audio and therefore they are sometimes desynced.

  • That's a wonderful clip! However, if you watch listen to the bass part carefully you'll hear notes that could not possibly be produced by what the bass player is doing onscreen. I think they just wanted some extra visual dazzle.

  • I have never seen a bass player play like that. What a headcase..lol

  • The bass player could only do one song per night. By the way, stickwithahit is correct - the video tape was inserted BACKWARDS. All of the marimbas have "reverse" keyboards.

  • Wow that is some kind of slap technique. His spine must be made of rubberized titanium--Id be in the hosp lol Great work

  • The bass player is fantastic

  • i bet the bass player sleeps well

  • 1:09 to 2:24

  • Cah-racks me up every time!! I love the bass player...He is soooo seriously wailing on those strings...Who put a nickel in his piano?

  • He's really getting in to it isnt he?

  • Has anyone noticed this video has been rendered BACKWARDS... To my knowledge there has never been a "reverse" keyboard percussion instrument made...

  • I did notice that. The bassist is even using his right hand on the finger board as well. It threw me off for a second.

  • The video IS backwards, but not rendered so....

The "soundies" were originally viewed through a contraption that used a mirror, and thus would reverse the image - to correct it, they were "produced" backwards.

  • Marimbaroll

  • HAHAHAHAHAH!!!

  • theres reg

  • worlds first headbanger

  • I want this band at my funeral!

  • White people are crazy.

  • Love this soundie but the bass player was WAY over the top! Fun though.

  • Who knew they had crack in the twenties?

  • whats up wit the bass player? lmao

  • He's got the vapors : o

  • Ahhhhh

    That bass player is halarious

I want to play just like him!

    lol

  • OMG talk about stepping outside ones self while playing, He freaking rocked dat bass fiddle

  • This guy was before his time.

  • regarding the comments about the image being reversed. Get the F*#k over it. Who gives a crap anyway?

What the video and enjoy it.

Do you think you impress the rest of us with your superior technical knowledge or something? Sheesh

  • The reason it's reversed is that the film was made as a 'soundie' for a panoram machine, a sort of early video jukebox. Try w,w,w,.soundies,DOT,net for more details. In order to get the correct distance from film to screen in a small machine it was projected through a series of mirrors, so it has to start out backwards. The reason the music doesn't always seem to match is that the soundtrack wasn't in sync with the picture on the film, and was dubbed on slightly ahead

  • wow gracias a dios que me tope con este video!

el bajista tiene la actitud mas punk rock del mundo!!!

  • And it's all reversed. Bass player is not left handed, and the keys on the marimbas are reversed too. Old film that was posted in reverse- like looking in a mirror. Interesting

  • the bass player is on crack

  • anyone know the name of this song?

  • A Study in Brown" is the name of the song.

  • That bass player is fucking rocking the shit out of his bass.

  • Rofl, yeah he is.

Rocked so hard, it almost made me pee my pants.

  • Im just amazed that he can play his bass with all those crazy antics

  • I think this is my definition of perfection :]

  • stupid.

  • I dont get whats so funny...?

  • My daughter came to me and begged for me to watch this. She was laughing until she cried from the next room for 40 minutes. The other people's comments were part of the fun. Now I understand why. Thanks for sharing! P.S. Check out the lady that shakes those marracas.

  • the ape on the double bass makes this all worth while!

  • what the hell is this?

  • That bass fiddle player DO get down don't he?!!! :-)

  • THIS VIDEO IS ROUND THE WRONG WAY - OBVIOUSLY THE XYLOPHONES ARE ROUND THE WRONG WAY .. lol

  • That bassist is the very definition of "flipping the fuck out on one's instrument".

  • If Heaven's not EXACTLY like this video, I'm going to be very very very very very very disappointed.

  • Very nice bass player!

  • Forget Wolfie, this guy should be Van Halen's new bass player.

  • Wow...them backwards soundies.

Disconcerting to watch, if you're a musician ;-)

  • SAY WHAT?

  • definitely doing it !

  • I spent most of today walking about with an exremely long face, until I heard the sounds(& learnt the moves)of Mr.Reg Kehoe & Company.

Who ever started this ball rolling, you got taste.L

  • The print is backwards as it was reflected by a mirror in the soundie machine so it came out proper to the viewer

  • that was sweet

  • It's like a 1940's flea

  • The bassist's name is Frank DeNunzio Sr. Apparently he just died in 2006. That guy is an animal. Check out Milt Hinton for more upright bass slap stuff

  • I'm in love with the maraca player

  • They ended the video too early... the bass player smashes the bass on stage then sets it on fire. I'm serious, he's Jimi Hendrix's grandfather.

  • That is some DOPE Slap technique I'll be sure to copy! Dude must be high!

  • what in the hell is this? haha

  • best....video...ever

  • Did anyone notice that the video is backwards?

That bass player isn't even pretending. He would fail terribly at "Bass Hero".

  • Yeah - it's a mirror image - right should be left.

Dang that bass player has chops and style -he kicks major buttocks

  • that bass guy it totaly me in like 5 years

  • that was completely insane. WTF is he on?? lol. Also did anyone notice the 'ladies' look like men? lmao

  • I thought the bass player was going to light his bass on fire.

  • Yeah he must have got a LOT of chicks with those moves

  • Ricky Ricardo would hollar..."bobbaloooooo"

  • Man was waiting for the bassist to start playing it with his tongue.

  • congrates on being featured on Yahoo's The 9..

  • I think I may have found a new favourite band! That was so refreshing and awesome!

  • coolest. bassist. EVER.

  • His name is Frank Denunzio, and he is indeed the first man to sip from the golden chalice of rock and roll.

  • That man may very well have been the first human to sip from the golden chalice of Rock.

  • This clip is backwards...ie bass player playing with wrong hand, marimbas are the wrong way. High notes should be to audience left, not audience right...Funny what putting the film in backwards will do...

  • ...I think the odd/hilarious part is just how hard this guy is rocking out while playing this kind of music.

  • That guy's great in the sack! I should know; he's my dad!

  • Now thats entertainment!

  • That bass player is a little ahead of his time. Headbanging etc doesn't come around for anouther 40 or 50 years.

  • What a hoot! How come you can't hear him?

  • Can't hear him! Check your speakers :)

  • actually, it's Flea's dad ... well maybe not, Flea's stepdad is a friend of mine and a great jazz bassist (Walter Urban)

  • He's probably knows he's about to bang some of those chicks

  • yeah, I thought he was going to reach out and grab one of the girls' tities while his hands were going all over the place.

  • I'm gonna work on that. That's what's been missing from my playing. That certain...flair. Jay Leonhart

  • WTF?! LOL... The bass player has got to be high on something. XD

  • Holly crap Rock on!

  • \m/ \m/

  • that dude's puck rock

  • weirdest thingive seen in ... yeah a long time, good post ! lol

  • Bass players aren't considered to be wrapped too tight as a whole...

I think I saw my mom in there...

  • That's Les Claypool's Dad.

  • think the fucker is humping the damn bass, lmfao.

  • hm. i think the bass player has wiplash.

  • Meh, lots of upright string players played that way back then. Just check out any video of harp players rom the 30's/40's (Marx brothers, Three Stooges, et al).

  • Wasn't that bass player in "Reefer Madness?"

  • omg omg thats a song i do not want yet will certainly have in my head forever and ever and ever and ever.

  • This guy was way ahead of his time.

  • this is fucking great...

  • ... *blinks*

I wonder if he had a headache afterwards?

  • rotflmao!!! hahaha i love it.

  • Hollar !!

  • Is this the first Coca Cola commercial? And isn't this still during the age they added real cocaine?

  • what a ham-rocker! anything for a buck back in those days I guess.

  • wow, that guy must be on some kind of wonderful drug.

  • too bad the bass is hard to hear. but still, that guy is an amazing performer

  • The dude in the video isn't doing anything on that bass in any way related to the song. I doubt he's an actual bass player at all, prob'ly just some wild and crazy dude from Central Casting.

  • I'm betting he and the chick on the far left have a thing

  • Sounds like a Super Mario theme.

  • dear god that was fantastic

  • That made my day

  • the worlds first headbang lol

  • The double bass is like a woman...she's big and fat and likes to be slapped!!!(a la Crenshaw)

  • I've got a Fever! And the only prescription is more bass!

  • Thanks you internet, that was a good 2 minutes of my life

  • geezer butler wannabe.

  • I watched the entire thing, and I didn't see any bass player. Just all those women!

  • He's playing an upright bass. He's kinda hard to miss!!!!

  • Cocaine's a helluva drug

  • wooooooo long live this video and the bassist

  • fuckin metal!

  • dat bass player's almost as good as Bill K!

  • WHOA!

the very definition of waaaay ahead of his time lol, he is DOIN THAT THANG!

  • Those chicks already look like grandmas.

  • pleasantly suprising, hilarious, and good

  • I think that Frank is copping a feel on the marimba player in the back row early in the tune.

  • Actully, the film is flipped, the marimbas are backwards. When playing one, the higher notes should be on the players right hand, and to the viewers left side.

  • Film isn't flipped, bass player is a leftie.

    And a baddass.

  • Film is definitely flipped, unless those are specially made backwards keyboards.

  • This is because original Soundie films were printed backwards so that they could appear correct when played in the Panoram machine (an early film jukebox).

  • Interesting. Didn't know that. Well, there's a correct (non-backwards) version posted on youtube, too.

  • You are correct ! Excellent vid though...

  • he's hitting all that shit

  • Dat guy's playings the bass likes Dethkloks!

  • wow that guy can wail on that bass

  • I guess they don't call them "Queens" for nothing. =D

  • amazing

  • I play bass like that when I take speed

  • He definitely gets my vote.

  • I think we should applaud that bassist, without his gutsy moves at the front of the stage we may never have had lead bassists in Motorhead and Winger!

  • That guy is way ahead of his time for heavy metal haha

  • Yeah, he wishes he was as awesome as Cliff Burton. AMEYERIGHT?

  • Original Soundie films were printed backwards so that they could appear correct when played in the Panoram machine (an early film jukebox).

And the headbanging bass player is Frank DeNunzio Sr.

  • Fascinating! Thanks for the nostalgie-tidbit! :)

  • Sheer magic!

  • did anyone else notice? Are the mirimbas backwards? small end should be the other way, like a piano. film is flipped? left to right mirror. Hilarious bit.

  • completly raw, hella hyphy!

  • As a percussionist, I can say that this is awsome! I wish I could play like that!

  • I absolutely cannot stop watching this crazy bastard.

    Hilarious style!

  • See, one can be so much more expressive with a double bass. Also, wasn't that lead guy in the Munsters?

  • Hooray, crazy bass man.
