  • good tenor I at 2:40

  • we did sang this song but a lot faster it sounds like crap slow

  • What is this song about??

  • we are singing this, (LHS Lyrics 2010-2011) and taking it a little bit faster. However, it's like watching gods and goddesses, wearing the same robes, singing the same music as us. we hope we do you all proud!

  • @preppybeast6293 Im an alumn of LHS and Lyrics ( i was a part of this choir actually lol) and it is great to know that you guys are doing great things! "gods and godesses?" lol wow i feel lowkey honored lol

  • basses are just wow ! amazing

  • I was looking for Elija Rock for my Chior homework..

Does anyone no the Elija Rock by Richard something?

    I forgot the last name!

  • The basses are fantastic!

  • I appreciate the fact that the choir has taken a different approach to performing this song. In music, especially spirituals, you have an implicit license to redefine/reinterpret another's music. And that is what makes music beautiful and exciting. Little nuances (or in this case, big nuances) adds excitement and cause your creative juices to flow! To the maestro -- BRAVO! Keep challenging... keep thinking out of the box... KEEP MAKING MUSIC!

  • okay hollisterbabee2, i'm sorry, but lyrics is amazing. this group of people went and toured AUSTRIA. i find it VERY hard to believe that a 7th and 8th grade choir could ever be better than a Grammy winning music program. i may be biased because i'm in the group now, but i wasn't then, and they sound fabulous. i would love to hear your show choir do it.

  • Okay, this was a decent rendition, but a few things are standing out to me. The tempo (in my opinion) is way too slow. The basses in the beginning are supposed to be singing marcato, not legato. The overall sound is a little too bright. And the soprano 1's who are hitting the really high notes slide way out of tune.

Also, I couldn't help but notice that you skipped the DS al Coda at 1:43 and went straight to the coda.

    Good job though!

  • the tenors are very crisp....love the crecendos...the shout needs work

  • heyyy...this is kinda catchy=) lol

  • We are doing this song in 7th and 8th grade show choir, and we are definatly better than this; just saying; We have never had a grade under a 1 in competition : )

  • @hollisterbabee2 lololololololololololololololololololololololololololol

  • the tempo is ok... but i think i like it better faster... and i just didnt feel anything from the choir. it was like a robot was singing it. very good, otherwise

  • and Uh that "shout" was kinda BAD.. U are suppose to Sing SHOUT..not SHOUT! lol! but Overall.. Nice Interpetation...

  • tho the Tempo is a bit slow.. I dig it.. Because When Done in its Original TEMP ppl tend to over kill and go too Fast... I Love how they Blend Exactly as the MUSIC was written. Great Job Students!!!

  • The song is just way to slow (traditionally much faster, and if im not mistaken it's marked much faster as well). Nice blend, but the vowels aren't tall enough to pull of a mature sound. NICE JOB BASSES AT 2:39!

  • actually the tempo is fine......you have option of taking the tempo faster or slower. Hogan left that up to the conductor

  • Comment removed

  • "Estimated" is the key word. Not definite. Look at the Overton High School Chamber Singers from 1995. We were the first group to perform the song outside of moses' group.

  • LOL.. lawd i felt like i was walking in a funeral precessional... it was just tooo slow... it was painful to listen to... and wassup with that soprano solo toward the end(SHOUT).. that was awful

  • I've heard the song both fast and slow and I think that when the tempo is at this speed, the song is much more intense. You can hear the words well and hear the amazing chords!

    Great job Lyrics!

  • exactly.......Overton High School Chamber Singers 1995 elijah rock

  • OMG Hogan would die if he saw this....tone quality is great, and it very well in tune, but it is missing the body of the song. To slow, the voices dont sound muture, and theres just no feeling from the choir.

  • It sounds like you mistook accents for staccato's a couple times, and the tempo could've been a titch fast, but overall this is exceptionally well done. good job! :)

  • Very INTERESTING interpretation! Especially the use of the portimento at the very beginning of the piece. This interpretation allows the listener to appreciate the complexity and beauty of Moses Hogan's dissonant yet lyrical chords. Despite having gone sharp, despite the occasional voice sticking out...Great use of dynamics, unified vowel sounds, blend, and consonant articulation!!! Overall AMAZING job!!!

    Professor Darius Thomas

  • i like this song i heard this for the first tuime sunday

  • I am sorry but I do not like this tempo at all...it doesn't even have the feeling of a espiritual anymore...if you guys would of done it faster it would of sounded much better...

  • the higher choir at my school sang this

    and they sounded fantastic

but they sang it A LOT FASTER

    its good though

  • other than this song being toooooooo slow... ya'll sounded good...

when my choir performed this we sang it way faster...

  • this song is supossed to be so much faster than this! it is supossed start out intense and dark and it leads to the chilling chords by the end of the song. this sounds like they learned it at the wrong tempo because the director wasn't paying enough attention and he just decided to roll with it instead of singing it the way the great Moses Hogan intended.

  • We did this song in our high school choir. We took a much faster tempo, which annoyed the living daylights out of me. Personally i love this tempo. As a Tenor 1 i love the way the one section came out. Very nice job.

  • Our choir is singing this for contest. The glissandos on yours are pretty good, but the voices are too bright for this piece. Your 'rock' and 'lawd' are wide and not open. I like it taken slower, though. It would sound a lot better if you darken it.

  • way to slow i wish the roosevelt a cappella choir was on here they sang this song the best out of what i heard

  • the song is suppose to be wayyyy faster!!

  • i never said they werent good they r im just saying becuz they r good they should be trying more challenging pieces and actually no we do it very well

  • k im in gr.8 and im singing this but then again i do go to an arts school but thats not the point they should be doing more challenging pieces

  • damn this is suppose to be really fast. your just dragging out a long song already

  • it's okay if you want to sing it in slow version. but not that slow.

i think it's better if you sing it lil bit faster.

cause this song tells us about spirit(not that kind of spiritual, but yes it's about spirit) and passion.

our passion to against the devil.

(well i guess i'm over reacting, lol. but please recorrect my comment, if i'm wrong)

but you guys did a great job.

    best regards from indonesia.

(i'm sorry for my english, i'm not good in it)GBU.

  • yeah. i agree with others. it's too slow.

and for the sopranos, you guys need to sing it 'darker'. but, for the part "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa", well done guys!

your voice was pretty clear. ;)

  • WAY TO SLOW!!!!

  • waaaaaaaaaay too slow

its not too bad but slowing it down so much takes away much of the power of the song

  • they need more soul, they needed to put meaning and emphasis.... too slow.... and they needed to sound waaaaay more soulful

  • .....you guys swelled rather well. but i wouldn't ever be able to sing it this slow. it kinda feels like it would put people to sleep.

  • ummmmm.... well 1 it was too slow......2 the sopranos were screechy and 3 it was TOO SLOW!

  • whoawhoawhoa...too slow!

  • Basses need 2 sing out as well as put more "K" sound on their rock. cuz it sounds like theyre saying Elijah Rah

  • it wasn't bad, for me it was slow but it was cool. on the oh's the slide down is on beat 4 not the whole whole note. it was neat but it was very young.

  • hehe thats my middle school! i was in MICCA on 4/4/07 if anyone has a tape of it and Norwood Womens Chorale please put it up

  • im in love song we sung it for all city chorus

  • For me it had a cool sound until the altos came in on the "come on sister"

you're sound went from fairly mature to preteen voices

it got a little better at the "if i could"

i think your vowels could improve

your dynamics in the begining were pretty unique though, so kudos for that

try not to accent the "i" vowels

if you want to see my schools version, you can check out my channel =]

  • Overall, it wasn't my favorite, but it did have many great high points. I performed this song with my choir this year and we took it at a slower tempo, as well as looked into the meaning of the song. I feel that if you really want to move the audience you must first connect with the music, then portray the feeling that it represents to the audience.

    Very good though!

  • hmmm i actually did like this slower interpretation of the song. I love it fast but i like this way as well. It sounds really cool when you go from the ritardando in the verses back to tempo on the TB part of the chorus at 2:38. The Soprano high notes at the end were a bit disapointing though. Good Job overall

  • I agree, I think the slower tempo produces a really cool effect, especially toward the end.

  • is this at an ACDA competition in kean university new jersey? cause thats the auditorium it looks like.

  • nvm, i don't read. lol sorry

  • i really like how its slower than the piece really is

i understand why you did it slower

he composed it so that people could get the feeling of the piece

  • yeah, the tempo is much slower than the version i know. but very very nice blend! great job. :) and a really nice sound from the tenors.

  • this isnt how the song goes its faster and better

  • Not really... my school did it slower like this, and it really helps you get the feeling of the song, which is kind of spooky and mystical. I've seen way too many choirs do it too fast and completely ruin the piece. Plus, we actually met Moses Hogan before he died, and he said he liked our version even better than his own choir. So it's not too slow. Now the vowels in this choir could use a lot of work...

  • Hmmm some parts I hated and some parts were amazing!

  • the tempo is too slow...

    that makes the song boring

and the second chorus?... after of "he's a conjur, Hallellujah Rock"...

    where is it?

  • Don't go to rough on KingK, he only tries to compensate for his small e-penis by arguing how good or bad we were on a YouYube message board.

Anyways, who gives a fuck what this gutless douchebag says? I'm sure he is some washed up prick who has some undeserved sense of accomplishment because he is at the top of his local church group. Point is WE know how good we were and that we worked hard to get to where we did. Lets not let some asshole make us think otherwise.

  • A little on the slow side but they blended really well. Amazing.

  • i remember the first time i heard this song. it gave me the chills. so well done and intenseeee.

  • my choir's practicing this now so the philly all city choir can perform on mlk day.

  • Good job, but I'm assuming that the choir director slowed you all done. It's a difficult song to do at the right tempo.

Well done. It's a hard song to do at the high school age.

  • ya. LHS rules

  • yall are great. an LHS in our state sang this but yall did it better...

    AWESOME!!

  • Sorry to say but King is right...I've performed this myself a few times..They don't capture the true meaning of the piece whatsoever...It's meant to be done MUCH fast, much more energy...

  • Oh, and by the way, I would take Mr. Thomsen any day over your conductor who probably gave you that fucking arrogent attitude of yours. Thomsen is the fucking man. You're a prick.

    Have a nice day.

  • Way to take it to him man. I would if someone was an arrogent prick regarding my choir. Fuck him, tweaking aside(Noone is perfect) you sounded great. Where do these assholes come from?

  • This group is from Longmeadow High School in Massachusetts. The conductor retired last year.

    Lyrics is Bad ass

  • Thanks for the info, but when I asked about assholes I was referring to the arrogent, over-critical creeps with the Mozart complex that get off on bashing everything they see on the internet because they have no friends or lives. It was a rhetorical question. Thanks!

  • KingK should shut the fuck up. It's that goddamned elitest attitude (OMG IM SO GOOD LOL) that leads him to post comments like that. Fuck you, asshole. You're basing your decision on sound that came from a camcorder. No one gives a shit if you think it's not good, asshole. We're in high school, and we did fine.

  • There is validity to your statement. Minding the profanity I understand your point. I base my opinions on very high standards. After watching this video I continued to watch other videos of this song and most were very bad. This choir is very good compared to the other choirs on youtube, although there are better recordings from some better choirs out there just not here. I owe an apology for my comment, and wish I could take it back. Baring that, there is still room for improvement.

  • i wish you guys did it up to speed

  • yeah kingk, the fuck are you talking about, you're in a "professional choir"...this is a high school group that meets, at best, 4 hours a week. Let's fight.

  • You are right, I was quite harsh and I apologize for my comment, no need to flip. Although, the time limit that doesn't mean the song can't be better, at contest you are given very limited time to work on your performance music but that doesn't mean it should not be good. I say that I am in a profession choir to let people know that I actually do know what I am talking about. Anyone who actually knows music will agree with me. Regards.

  • I was in the group when we preformed that. Not our best preformance by a long shot.

Imagine 25% of the members joining the group for the first team each year, will you?

Now imagine you only practice 3 hours a week on your pieces. Yes, we did not have it that tight, or even know the piece well enough to just get lost in the emotion...

But dont you ever dare to suggest that Mr. Thomsen resign. Those gold medals and the tears that the seniors cry every spring concert dont come from nothing.

  • From the perspective of someone in a professional choir and of a professional vocalist it wasn't good. Not much feeling, this choir didn't adapt to the style of the song. Their vowels were way to bright. Bad diction. Tenors went flat. Not impressed.

  • THEY ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL! SHUT UP! there not professional so for there level there amazing!

  • You are right to a point. I was quite harsh in making these comments and compared to other choirs on youtube they are actually pretty good. But they are not a top notch high school choir. Regardless of your opinion.

  • I seriously doubt that you are in a professional choir. The reason I believe this is that if you were actually around music for a large portion of your life, your original summary of our song would have taken into account the age of our group.

"Top notch"? We've been on two European tours in the past 4 years...perhaps we're not the best of the best, but we're very good.

So like I said, let's fight.

  • Just because you doubt it doesn't make in any less true. I have been around music for the majority of my life. I majored in music theory at Capital University. For the past 2 years I have been a judge at state contest and I have heard this piece as a contest piece for High School.

  • Age doesn't mean anything and obviously you don't know that. There are high school choirs that are better then adult choirs. Age is a horrible excuse for underperforming. Don't kind yourself, tours don't mean anything. Going to Europe just means that your school had the money to go there. Unless that is, you were invited to have a private performance in St. Paul's cathedral or the Sistine chapel.

  • "Age doesn't mean anything and obviously you don't know that."

Let that comment sink in for a second. You're saying that a group of teenagers with an age range of 15-18, many of which are loving puberty and constant vocal changes, have no disadvantage in comparison to an adult choir. Furthermore, in this age range, these kids are going through pretty minor stuff, like maybe, school, or uh, sports, negligible things. On the other hand, professional adult choirs do music...as...their...job.

  • ...but you're saying there's no difference. Well then that leaves two options. 1st option, I am right, and you are not actually a professional singer (and we probably shat on your chest in MICCA). Or, 2nd option, you're just one straight-up mother-fucking retard.

    I'm leaning towards the latter

  • I don't know why you keep bringing this up, especially when I have been right this whole time. I never said that HS choirs are better then professional choirs(a few are though). I said adult choirs meaning college level or church choirs. Yes, age doesn't make much of a difference younger voices tend to be more rich then adult voices, and you either know how to sing or you don't.

  • And another thing, being in a professional choir is not a full time job, it pays well, but I have another part time job in addition. Also, look at the comment right below this by jacer117. They agree with me too. Most of these other people don't know music.

  • Rereading previous posts, the major thing we did incorrectly was that we sang the song at too slow a tempo.

Anyhoo we've gotten consecutive gold medals at MICCA for over a decade now, have been on two European tours, our choral program has won multiple Grammy awards, and our alumni do not critique high school choirs and show off their fake credentials to feebly try to bolster their self-confidence.

    You, King Kong712, are pathetic.

    Goodbye.

  • It is nice to see that you are unable to except the truth. Your group is good but I feel this song is not the best evidence of that. Sorry, I don't like the performance, nobody will always be happy regardless of the talent. The tours don't meaning anything, my choir has done all that stuff plus one, don't think you are special. This is one of the better public school choirs that I have heard, but not the best. I still didn't like the performance.

  • And talk about boosting your own self confidence, you are the one who responded to my comment, and even after I apologize for my comments you continued your own little rant to feel special. I am sick of arguing with a stupid high school kid so please stop commenting.

  • it's kinda funny considering they won gold on this piece so..thanks :)

  • you know what you sound like to me? elijah rock, GULP, elijah rock...

haha, it's pretty funny.. but seriously this isn't bad.

  • My school is doing this song for our Winter Concert... As if anyone actually cares.. :)

  • that sounds horrible! NEW CONDUCTER PLEASE!!!! THE WHOLE CHOIR SOUNDS CONSTIPATED!

  • so true!!

  • the whole choir needs to train diligently on their basic vocal techniques, such as learning to breathing deeper and taller, pronounciation (as in practising appropiate mouth shapes when prononcing various vowels)

  • Their tenors are great as well and don't sound like prepubescent boys like ours did when we did this same piece for our highschool's jr/sr choir. We did the piece with the recommended speedy tempo, but there was definitely something lost. Good for the director for not sacrificing tone and over sound quality for speed, but these guys sound like they have the talent to speed it up!

  • samg7674--

I agree that the tempo is extremely slow and could stand to go much, much faster, but that's the only thing that I don't like about the performance. Their tone is great, and the have a nice balance.

  • en el verano cantaremos esta cancion en mi coro, encuentro qe esta demasiado lenta.

pero les saLe bien ;) saLuds !

    Panzhoo

  • Aah MICCA

    my favorite thing ever.

especially going two days in a row <3

  • hear hear

  • they did it slow because they arent black (dont have soul) but theyre still better than you. and are the most balla thing you can do with music.

  • this shit sounds slow and retarted...moses hogan turnin in his grave!!

  • heheh! so funny :) love it!!

  • LHS Lyrics rules!

  • I love this song. However, this version is slower than it's supposed to be, which makes it seem draggy. It sounded like they were trying too hard to make their words understandable. 4 stars either way though.

  • This is unbelievably random, but I was in the Newton South Madrigals who performed a few groups before the LHS lyrics here. We had to leave before awards and I was wondering if whoever this is stayed for awards and by any chance remembers what place the Newton South Madrigals got. No one will tell us and our chorus teacher doesn't know either!! Thanks so much!

  • Sorry Justine. I was there for the awards, but I don't remember what your choir recieved. I think it may have been a bronze or silver. I've searched the internet but haven't been able to find a breakdown of the awards anywhere.

  • u got bronze i think
