  • engineers thoughts " you know youve got a problem, when the crankcase has a hole big enough to pass a toyota through it"

  • 1:14 THIS is why you use an EMD...

  • 1:15 HOLY CRAP!

  • Are all GEs smokers/flamers? Just askin'......

  • You dont know anything about trains retard

  • @UP5140SD70M You talking to me, Little punk?

  • @UP5140SD70M Dude that was uncalled for. Seriously.

  • Now I know what GE stands for, "Great Explosion". EMD ALL THE WAY.

  • @traingp7 GP35, GP50, SD50, BL2, SD90/43MAC........need I say more? Nobody's perfect a-hole.

  • theres ur problem!

  • As I understand from searching UP Train Symbols, I found this train Symbol meaning.

    C=Coal

NA=North Antelope Mine (Powder River Basin)

    AE=Associated Electric (New Madrid, MO)

08= Leaving 8th day of the month

  • Just look at all the railfan dweebs wanting to make stupid comments that they think shows how much of an expert that they are. They make me want to throw up when I read their bullshit! Thats the main part of this hobby that I hate!!

  • at first it looked like a dash-8 now its a AC44CW or AC4400CW

  • @mark10788 Still a n00b I see, The AC44CW and the AC4400CW are the SAME THING.....

  • @ALS2001 Im letting you Comment to my channel again. lets all say this is a mistake ok?

  • @ALS2001 Thank you for helping me you are awesome

  • @ALS2001 ok i get it so will you stop being rude to me? <:(

  • LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Im still learning about locomotive models.

  • Never would have happend if it had the EMD 721 2 stroke engine in it. GE = General Explosions. Yep I'm a EMD fan.

  • @USATrainsGScaleGroup

Yea, it kinda would. People love skipping the maintence factor. You take any engine with poor maintence, results are poor perfermance. I don't have a 'favorite' manufacturer EMD and GE are both good. If I had to vouch, I'd go with GE; with their new ES (Evolution Series) locomotives. The ES44AC and the ES44AH being my personal favorites. I work with CSX Transportation, and you have to know your locomotives. I deal with EMDs and GEs enough to know, they both have problems.

  • @EdEddnEddy4 I have to admit there has been EMD VS GE fans for a while. However EMD was making good locomotives before GE made anything good. GE didn't even get heavy into the market until the Dash 8 was introduced. EMD was on the only manufacturer I'm aware of that had a 2 stoke diesel that was California Emmissions approved at one time with the 721e engine. Locomotives such as the EMD GP-9 still live on 50 years later and I believe those will out last the Dash 9 locos.

  • @EdEddnEddy4 You are confusing engineering design with maintenance. Yes if you don't maintain a engine it will blow. But if the engine was a engineering flaw then there is nothing you can do about anything happening. Yes EMD learned this the hard way with the SD-45 and the 20 cylinder diesel. The engine had a design flaw so they broke crank shafts and then EMD went back to the 16 cylinder design. The 721 was definately their bullet proof motor.

  • @EdEddnEddy4 When NS looked for "helper" locomotives they re-built thier own. They picked out the best chassis which was the EMD SD-50, but the motor was a fuel hog and prone to problems, So NS took SD40-2 engines and rebuilt them and put them in the SD-50 Chassis, they also put the SD40-2 fuel tanks on the SD-50 and revamp the entire interior. They called this model the SD-40E, they made 25 of them for Altoona, PA and I have pictures of them. Nice concept on NS part.

  • @USATrainsGScaleGroup

    I'd say.

  • This is an electric locomotive right?? Not a diesel?? LOL

  • @400exNick Actually, it's a diesel-electric locomotive. The diesel fuel is burned to make electricity that go to either AC or DC traction motors. (In this case, AC because it's a C44AC.) If it was an electric motor, there would have to be pantograph lines above it.

  • damn!!...i too have been a witness of railroad accidents..back in summer of 2007l,in tarboro north carolina,my hometown,1 of the local csx freight trains that crosses the town on a daily basis, crashed wit a 18 wheeler truck, the train split the truck in two!,the truck was carrying woodchips,my dad had called me about it that day..and today..some of the woodchips that were spilled on the tracks..can still be seen and serves as a reminder of that accident,

  • now thats gonna be expensive to fix.

  • This video gives me an idea for a story.

  • 6741 is not a AC4400CW is a Dash-8 or GE B32-dash-8

  • @mark10788 You seriously don't know ANYTHING about trains.

    You Fail Epicly....

  • @ALS2001 haha jim wat a dash-8 is he kidding?

  • @ALS2001 Dash-8s have the ditch-lights on the cowcatcher And this is the One and real truth i've been loving trains since i was a little kid Dash-9/C44-9W/AC4400CWs have their ditchlights on the front walk of the locomotive. P.S @Mom10788 Is my actual mom

  • Comment removed

  • @mark10788 You have no clue in the world about locomotive types. UP has never owned a B32-8. Get your facts straight.

  • @177987auprr1 I Know what a Sd90/43Mac looks like! I can tell a locomotive model while im on a car going at 60 MPH!

  • @mark10788 Obviously not a C44AC...

  • @177987auprr1 Careful what you say

  • @mark10788 No dash-8 has hi-add trucks

  • @MoPacBoy No Dash-8's haul coal trains on the Union Pacific. No Dash-8's had AC Traction either.

  • @mark10788 Thing is a B32 is a FOUR AXLE motor.. not a 6 AXLE which the unit in this video CLEARLY is of a 6 axle unit! IF IT REALLY WAS a Dash 8 it would be classified as a "C" model, for the 6 axles. But this is a AC44 and has been an AC44 since the day it was built in Erie, PA in March of 1996!

  • @mark10788

    Owner: Union Pacific Railroad Company

    Model: AC44CW

    Built As: UP 6741 (AC44CW)

    Serial Number: 49188

    Order No: -------

    Frame Number: ------

    Built: 3/1996

  • @mark10788 Learn your facts, or you will be laughed out of this hobby.

  • @ALS2001 Dude no need to be an ass.

  • @mark10788

You must have this locomotive confused with the GE Dash 8-40CW as both the AC44-CWs and 8-40CWs look similar with the wide safety cabs. But they can easily be identified by their boogies. You can automatically eliminate the option B32 as B represents 4-axles and C is what represents 6-axles which 6741 is, hint AC4400''C''W. The AC44 is also AC traction, hint ''AC''4400CW, where in other areas the Dash-8 series was only equipped with DC traction. Hope this info helped.

  • @EdEddnEddy4 You got that 100% right

  • @mark10788

Yea, nowadays GE locomotives look identical with only a few minor differences. Especially the Evolution Series (GEVOs) but the big equipment boxes make them stick out.

  • @mark10788

    Owner: Union Pacific Railroad Company

    Model: AC4400CW

    Built: 3/1996

Other locos with this serial: UP 6741 (AC4400CW)

  • typical GE

  • WOW, what an amazing catch!

  • holy sheep shit batman put that fire out FAST!

  • Holy shit is more like it.

  • your lucky that the engien pasted you before blowing in flames

  • the problem with electric rails is that they are much more expensive to own and operate not to mention the locomotives are more expensive and as US railroads are privately owned it wouldnt make sense to electrify all US rails. It was done in the early 1900's on the Northeast Corridor but after trucks and carsrevenue the tracks went into decay and the main structures of the Corridor havent been upgraded since the 50s?

  • You don't electrify the entire railway at the same time. You do it one section at a time.

But with that said, even electric engines can fail and catch fire.

  • I think this locomotive heard the news that Obama is going for relection in 2012 and threw a rod/piston after that! Lol

  • how the hell did it catch on fire

  • Hey, It could of been worse. If that were to happen in a desert like area some where near the south west of USA and about 100 plus miles from civiliation, now that would suck.

  • Naturally, it's a GE!!! Haha!!!

  • @TVRM610 Any engines can do this.

  • @Gman2A2 I am removing your comment. The last the the Japanese need is people talking crap about them because of the tsunami

  • @ALS2001 this takes throwing a rod to a whole new level lol. ive seen this video ages ago. but its the best one out there. as far as this subject matter goes.

  • Looks like this thing cracked after working too much. Not that this is anything new as this could happen to any engine after a while that is. At least it was repaired and the most important thing is that no one got hurt, which is what really matters.

  • Mmmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmmmmm Toasty!

  • are you one of those " train junkies " or whatnot ?? a friend in high school had a father who was all about trains. Can you message me at how or why you are into the "activity " I do not know what word to use :D Thanks

  • @brenthoser99 I think the expression you are looking for is called a,"Railfan."

  • Overall, I've had more trouble with EMDs than I have GEs. None will last long, however, without proper maintainance.

The Milwaukee Road tried to go electric and went broke in the process...

  • GE aint reliable? All UP locomoitves are 100% relilable. The computer told me so.

  • @northersteame wikipedia? XD

  • Nice Catch Just goes to show always have your camera ready cause u just Never know..

  • must of used nitrous lol...fried the rings...anyway good catch ALS2001

  • Wow nice catch!

  • I was on the North Coast Limited on one of it's last runs in the early 70's and this same thing happened out of Spokane, WA. Sent the Engineer to the hospital. Was not fun. I was in the VistaDome and saw a ball of fire erupt. Scared the C^%p outta me.

  • I like worn out engines, wars in foreign countries, and things that are environmentally un-friendly. I really do.

  • Return to strongback mountain

  • GE QUALITY AT ITS FINEST!

  • Not gonna happen in an oil-dependent economy...

  • Great catch, thanks for sharing.

  • @electricrailwaygod It may seem logical to electrify a national rail network like Those of Japan, Germany and France, however, in the United States, a single rail operator can operate cose to 15,000 miles. With over 40,000 miles of track in operation, it does not seem financially possible, considering all the yards, double-triple track lines in use. Were talking about a Quintillion dollars here! I do agree, the war that Bush started is stupid.

  • @ALS2001 first of bush you can't blame everything on bush. yes he was a bad president, but it was a bad time. 9/11 really changed his whole agenda and never really got to show us the president he originally was going to be. and about diesel trains, can't they haul more than electric? i am not sure at all. i like trains and would love to know if that would be a viable solution

  • @chillaxer1993 GN and MILW showed that electrification wasn't "feasible"...before the Arab oil embargo. Had MILW kept their wires up, they might still be around today. With wind generation popping up all over, it's getting to be time to bury the diesel once and for all time. A recent study by BNSF and So Calif Edison shows that Tehachapi could economically be electrified NOW.

  • @ALS2001 and obamas too. electrification does tehem the right thing to do , BUT like you said. cost is a factor. our rail system is probably 10 times the size of japans. if not more. als wonder what can an electric railway , how much can it pull?, plus is our electric generating capacity up to the task of "juicing" the entire system?

  • @electricrailwaygod It would be up to the rail companies to electrify the rails, not the government.

  • @electricrailwaygod Let me just point out that we still have locomotives that are 40-50 years old, such as EMD SD40-2's that are still in operation due to their reputation for good reliablitlity. It's just a lot of these newer GE locomotives have a reputation for being junk.

  • @electricrailwaygod These are NOT "old and worn out diesel locomotives" for your information, these particular locomotives are GE CW4400's and less than 10yrs old, which is nothing, in terms of overall longevity for these. A failed piston or rod bearing, is Extremely rare. Electrification has been tried and used in both the eastern and mountainous regions of the US...too many problems with it, besides, these are Diesel-Electric...don't need power lines, and much more versatile than Electric.

  • @electricrailwaygod That could happen with an electric locomotive as well. Gear boxes have oil in them. Electric motors have grease. Union Pacific has one of the newest fleets of locomotives in the country. Those units there were built back in the late 90s. What do you do if the power goes out? Ice storms, Severe thunderstorms, wind, hurricanes, these all wreck havoc on electrical systems. If the country was all electric, no goods could get around. We use to have electric here but costy.

  • @electricrailwaygod Union Pacific Railroad is a private company and not a government agency. Though it would be more efficient in many ways if they electrified, the cost of replacing the thousands of locomotives that the railroad owns with electric locos and then the cost of stringing tens of thousands of kilometers of overhead wire would bankrupt the company. Union Pacific is only one of hundreds of private railroad companies in the USA.

  • @N1JIB They'd save money in about 5 years, getting rid of all this GE garbage they wound up with, all because it was a little cheaper than a comparable EMD. FDL engines have been crap from day 1...but then again, I guess you've never had to baby a U33C up Beaumont with a fire extinguisher by the seat the whole trip. GE = "garbage engines"

  • @electricrailwaygod and i guess Japan is covered with millions of solar panels or dams to power your grid.... riiight. You're obviously burning fuel to make the electricity. Powering the entire US rail grid with electricity would be wholly inefficient and we'd have to start a lot more wars to get more oil.

  • @electricrailwaygod Our govn't doesn't run railroads, the private sector does. When a govn't DOES run a railroad, you get the disaster called Amtrak. All govn't has to do is lower taxes so businesses have the capital to maintain locomotives better, build locomotives stronger, and operate railroads cheaper. In this country our govn't causes more problems for businesses then they solve. The last thing we need is govn't running railroads!

  • @mikebri527 You're full of crap (on a multitude of points), but that's self-evident.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 The only thing full of crap is you. Where is all your evidence to dispute my points? Where are all your facts about how great govn't runs railroads? Don't have any? Yeah, I thought so. Look up information about Amtrak (that is if you can read, I assume your mommy had to type your response for you) and you'll see how poorly it's run, just like everything else in govn't. Our railroads are the greatest in the world in spite of govn't, not because of it.

  • @electricrailwaygod How would it be possible (economically) to electrify long isolated heavy haul lines in the US, or here in Australia.

Take a look at Australia's Indian Pacific, and the vast tracts of sparsley populated barren inhospitable land it goes through, same for mining railways.

You have lofty ideals, but a poor grasp on the lay of the land.

  • @KG84C said, "You have ....... a poor grasp on the lay of the land."

And he also has a poor grasp on reality. :)

  • @electricrailwaygod Our railroads aren't owned by the government, they are privately held. The government can't force railroads to electrify.

  • @electricrailwaygod your stupid for even mentioning the war, and this is GE junk, the older thinner cabbed SD-series would definitely NOT have done anything like this

  • @trainguy3 Yup, GE is "Junk" that's why they out sell EMD by a landside. GE & EMD are both good companies who produce good stuff. Sometimes crap like this happenes and yes SD's have done this too.

  • @electricrailwaygod - "pursue stupid wars'- sounds kind of funny coming from Japan!

  • @electricrailwaygod Fuck off and eat a cat or do something halfway useful.

  • @electricrailwaygod Well JPN is a different country. Ive been there and its easier t build railroads because japan is small and slender. Smaller that the state of Cal. It's basically impossible to electrify all of the us railways like JPN. Except for Hokkaido which is not full electrified. God bless all those quake victims in JPN.

  • @electricrailwaygod These "old and worn out" diesel locomotives were built less than 10 years ago. Shaddup.

  • look at the fat man at 1:08 "should i tell someone....... heh effort. nvm"

  • wtf caused this mess?

  • delayed reaction?

  • wow. that's crazy.. almost happened in front of you.

just something funny you guys should enable captions. it down right funny. around 2:08 it says large airplanes on that side

  • GE = Gonna Explode

  • @Dockshund That is some funny shit...

  • alco wouldn't have had that problem...RIP Alco...and steam ftw! suck it diesels.

  • Comment removed

  • ive seen this video long long time ago before i was on railfanin business , grat lucky catch

  • Typical G.E.... :p That was crazy though

  • very good video. U got everything. very nice and congrats on makeing the news. Hope the wife was not pissed.

Just a tip. If you got the time scout the area out a bit and you can avoid most things like trees.

  • cool video

  • Excellent! thanks a lot for this footage!!!

  • Looks like the 6741 will keep the boys at North Little Rock busy for a while.

  • @UFOSPACE1999 You are no longer welcome to comment on my videos, hoosier, I am not a damn redneck, bitch

  • @ALS2001

great video, he's an asshole, and y'all say redneck like its a bad thing. lol

  • @ALS2001 no offense buddy but u do sound like one, but ill take your word for it sorry if i upset u

  • This proves GE's are very bad the AC4400CW Is the worst followed by the Even worse ES44AC/DC/C4 THey totally will blow up

  • You guys crack me up. One guy on here said " You guys are lucky, it almost melted thru the gas tank".

    hahaha.

  • Typical GE Crap! SD70ACe's all the way

  • Good position, good time, good person. I saw real blowing engine block (V8 82L) :D

There was explosion and ball of fire, but on this video is some fire

  • wow this is one SWEET video! AMAZING catch on camera!

  • man.......that sucks really bad.........half of the ge engines been going bad.......that would suck if it happens to there new GEEVO's...........well nice catch anyways........

  • At 0:58, 6741 (in TF2 Spy Voice) - I appear to have burst into flames! :O

Pretty weird experience, but a lucky catch :)

  • thats the problem with diesels

  • LOL. . .job interview.

  • Somebody stop that train the engine's on fire!!!!!!!

  • its GE all the way man none of that EMD look at the rosters GE out beats EMD

  • @brandynkjackson This video makes your comment invalid

  • @brandynkjackson finally someone who is fan of ge the gevos r the best loco running right now

  • @mjet401bnsf As long as the turbos don't blow up on them ...

  • @brandynkjackson GE LOCMOTIVES SUCK ASS!! EMD's LOOK COOLER, SOUND BETTER, AND ARE THE MOST RELIABLE!!!

  • ебланы... ждать пожарных. у самих огнетушителей нет ?

  • GE = General Explosion

  • Glad to see the Fire Department not parking their trucks on or near the tracks. Too many times I've seen them (and police) get hit by trains for not thinking about OTHER trains. Nice job guys :)

  • You are so lucky to have caught this on video. What did it sound like when the Piston blew?

  • Why did they not use the onboard fire extinguisher?

  • @VanWADebbie because engineers and conductors are not firefighters. The onboard fire extinguisher is for extreme emergency situations where the crew is in peril (ie, the cab is on fire and fire is blocking an exit). The railroad does not want you attempting to put fires out as that is a big liability. They don't want lawsuits on their hands after a crewmember gets burnt/killed trying to dowse a fire.

  • @mistertops What planet are you from? If there is a fire in the engine compartment you sure as heck better attempt to put it out or else you'll be getting asked questions by your management.

  • @GEES44DC You can do what you want, pal...but I'm just a lowly conductor, not a fire fighter. If I get hurt putting out a fire on a locomotive, the railroad is going to be paying out a lot more money to me than what it would cost to repair the engine. Management can ask all the questions they want but my union will back me up. Is it really necessary to put yourself in harms way to save a piece of machinery from fire? I'm not trained, nor payed to do that, nor REQUIRED to do that.

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • Fucking pieces of shit

  • @magwhb112 lol

  • Trains are cool when their pistols blow.

  • YES DEATH TO A POS UP LOCO

  • Dang old GE's...lol

  • y se acabó la tontera

  • Typical GE junk!!

  • Thats definitely what I would call dead bad lol.

  • Amazing catch, you should of sent this to the news

  • Stupid GEVO, get me a C44-9W!

  • C44AC's, both of them

  • What was the actuall cause? Dont appear to be a traction motor,no fire underneath. Was it just some excessive oil in the engine room? A few months ago,I had one burn on me,was put out before any heavy damage.

  • It sure is nice hearing the horn blowing in Kirkwood. Thanks alot great citizens of Kirkwood for making another stupid quiet crossing. If you don't like the noise do not live near the tracks. Good catch Jim.

  • Comment removed

  • looked like it through a rod

  • shit, you guys are lucky, it almost melted trough the gas tank!

  • So, did they bring another locomotive in to put as the lead locomotive?

  • Thats GE's for ya!

  • @macdogq at least it wasn't an sd90 otherwise it wouldn't have left the depot

  • @freedomunrestricted I have a buddy who works on GEs in Burnahm shop in Denver, Co., and he gets to play with GE parts all day, and said that GE have gone to Moffat tunnel west of Denver, and the new units at first automatically shuts down, because of overheating motors.

  • @macdogq Yea I get to play with GE and EMDs all day too, SD70m's are solid units. But large majority of problems I find or respond to on the main line are SD90s. But my comment wasn't so much directed at you but more for those who never deal with trains that have some kind of strange love affair with the sd90.

  • @freedomunrestricted I think SD 90s are well liked is because of their size.

    But SD90 have problems also.

  • WOW!

  • Good video till ya started talking...

  • new engine, prolly some paint....and some electrical wires....UP takes care of their locos...unlike conrail x.x

  • @furmaster212

    or a cyl. went bust...

look at the spilled oil flaming...

  • its the fireball express

  • you are right the fireball express

  • wow never seen that on the Jeff City Sub

  • poor scott an tim caught on tape

  • I feel bad for the train but nice catch bro!
