It's sad to see so many unenlightened people. Understandably Hopkins has an afinitey for Cooper being a fellow alcoholic..Maybe this was a gathering of alcoholic idolising one of their own..
it puts a smile on your face to see that Tommy was the best at a lot of things, he was a fine actor, a genius and magician and a fantastic prankster, try and find the video when he walks on the stage with a pile of plates its genius!
I'm from Rhydyfelin/Pontypridd but have been scudding around the globe for a while (now in the Philippines) and seeing Caerphilly Castle in the background is a treat..
AH's impersonation of TC was excellent. I was just watching him (AH) on 'Inside The Actors Studio' where his impersonations of others impressed..
Now - I distinctly recall watching TC on TV where he came onto the stage and did NOTHING. The audience were in fits at nothing. There's a star. Can't find it on YouTube.
I'm an American who first saw Mr. Cooper on Public TV here in New York in the 70's and I never forgot it. He was one of the first people I sought after here on you tube. I think it only fitting that someone who can make the world laugh (honestly out loud) should have a statue in his place of birth. God bless you Tommy and "Thank You Very Much".
That is the point I was making, he left when he was 3, but I think it is a Welsh thing to try to associate ourselves with anyone that may have passed through Wales at some point in their lives. It reminds me of the sketch on "goodness gracious me" where the old man claims everything to be Indian. My point was a little confusing.
I think the money would have been better spent on something in the community of Caerphilly and not on the statue itself. He may have been born in Caerphilly but once he left, like a lot of others he never looked back. The town like a lot of places in the South Wales valleys is in decline, just look at the surrounding estates. A bit of a pick me up but we need long term management of the long term problems.
Come on - he was three when he left...You can hardly blame him for not feeling so close to the place...And you have to remember that it was thepeople of Caerphilly who keep promting the connection with Cooper's birthplace.
In the newspapers featuring the article the following day, someone said Sir Anthony Hopkins looked uncannily like Frank Dobson. I saw the picture and I had to agree.
I'm a BUDDY HOLLY fan and saw his statue in lubbock texas...i'm now going to wales in the summer to see our own british legend..the statue of a man that bought so much joy, then and today...and it's a bloody bout time ....TC legend !!!!!!!
TC....Could make you smile and laugh without saying a word. And when the tricks went wrong, hilarious.

Such a shame that the people of Caerphilly chose to celebrate the life of the world's greatest comedian by inviting the world's worst actor!
