My favourite part by far is the courtroom scene in East Germany. It killed me how they had managed to lure the woman there and then had the trial in the closed off world of the GDR which effectively permitted them to apply their justice extra territorially. The carefully presenting of the facts of Mundt being an enemy of the people of the 'sacred' GDR by the zealous Fiedler was extremely interesting. I'm trying to work that angle into my graphic novel but having a hard time with the project.
Discuss what soap Alec Leamas thought would suit his bathing habits in Germany and how the problem of no hot water would be resolved. Explain what Leamas' boss, Control, knew of the hot water tank problem in Germany and how he planned to resolve it, and then decide if Alec Leamas was betrayed by his superior. In your conclusion offer some assessment of the bathing methods and hygiene that both sides used during the Cold War.
Odd combination of espionage and British kitchen sink drama producing a very fine film. Besides I've always been, well, very impressed with Claire Bloom.
@lotharrtheterrible Niles, I;m so tired of this. I've told you again and again in Group that I am not a homosexual and I don't want any kind of relationship with you but you persist in this bizarre behavior, including obscene jealousy if I even mention a woman's name. Please give the therapy a chance for your own peace of mind and please leave me alone.
@deriter64 LOL! That you took the time to think that up means I must have really, REALLY struck a nerve. You must have some deep seated emotional issues regarding sex.
Funny how many German actors are typecast. Peter Van Eyck (Mundt), an anti-fascist, left Germany before Hitler, became an American citizen, yet portrayed Nazis and East German communists in every other film!

Most movies are spoiled if you know the end, but this film is only enriched on 2nd, 3rd viewing.
The reason is partly the amazing cast: Burton, Bloom, Werner, Cusack, Hordern etc. And what a stroke of genius to cast the urbane George Voskovec as the East German Defense Attorney. J B Priestly said of the book: "Superbly constructed, with an atmosphere of chilly hell." And you could say that of the film too.
@mulbrogue Thanks I'll check it out. I was at Checkpoint Charlie in 80 and 88-90 and it really looks the way it did in 1980 down to the last detail. Great set design.
This movie so perfectly establishes the Cold War Germany milieu. The Pinewood Studios Checkpoint Charlie set is right on to every last detail. Well done and for the younger crowd, the way things used to be. Cheers.
Can't imagine this movie being made in color. The black and white tone reflects the loneliness and the dark moods of the character so much better. I love RB's performance and I love the background music.
@xingsheng1 more than the darkness of character, the hard, grittiness of the times. They woudl not have imagined the lives we lead today, particularly the young.
I just finished reading the book. Oh how I love this.

The Cold War was only about betrayal, & this was the best movie about the Cold War" "Whudda you think spies are!"

Burton is at his best in this film - he achingly portrays the toll that years of spying have taken on Leamus, and he mutes that famous voice to suit.

Excellent. A brilliant script and acting, a far cry from James Bond.
