  • how does an 8 year old learn how to play this

  • Hi, you are a genius!!! I do really need to get a teacher fast. It would help so much.

  • Hi, How do you get all this music? Also, how do you get these opportunities for all of these performances? I really want to start my music career as a flutist!!! I haven't had a lesson in 2 years and I've only started 3 years ago. The economy has made me not take lessons, so would you PLEASE help me!!!

    --Jason

  • @SuperPike8 Hi Jason, I think it's really important you get a teacher. Flute is hard and a teacher really makes things alot clearer. And the best way to get chances to perform is to perform wherever anyone will listen, church, school, senior centers, anywhere. The more you play the more people know you like to play and then you get asked to do other stuff if people like it. And join the flute club where you live so you know what flute stuff is happening. --Emma

  • @GeoRockMin flute club? What's that?

  • @TheHottchen Hi, Lots of cities and states have a flute club that has reciatls and competitions and a flute fair. It's lots of fun!!! Maybe there's one where you live??!!! --Emma

  • Was just wondering what flute you have!! and if you've ever played Troika by S. Prokofiev as i've recently just played it and would love to hear it played by someone else of flute!!

  • @nevie98 Hi, I have a Powell Conservatory flute that I love!!! I haven't played Troika but Prokofiev is awesome!!! Have fun playing!!!

    --Emma

  • Emma, how old are you now? (Not a personal question) Because this is really good and I think you must be like waaaaaaay better (if that's possible becuase this is too good. ;D) now.

  • @IBeMai161 Hi, Thanks for watching!!! I'm 10 now. I have some videos from a couple months ago, Gaubert Fantasie and the 3 movements of La Flute de Pan. Thanks again for watching!!!

    --Emma

  • Your amazing Emma! :D I do flute at band at school! I wish you could teach me! HAHAHA!

  • Hey Emma! Just stopping by and leaving a comment.

Around how much time did you spend learning this piece? Your fingerings are soooo amazing!! Did you do a special exercise for your fingers to play fast?

    Terrific playing, best of luck

    Haelin :):)

  • @dottiedal281 Hi Haelin, Hope you're doing great!!! It usually takes me 1 or 2 weeks to learn the notes to a song. And then a few more weeks to decide what the music says. For me fast fingers come from lots of scales and etudes every day. The Reichert exercises are real finger twisters. Have a fun weekend!!!

    --Emma

  • Hi I was just wondering if u couldent play the flute what instrament would u play! I think the oboe is pretty cool cause it has a double reed!

  • @makenaburke213 Hi, Thanks for watching!!! Yes the oboe sounds really great!!! If I couldn't play the flute I think I'd play some wailing jazz on the saxaphone.

    -Ms. Anne =)

  • Emma, you are an amazing flutist! Your technique is incredible, and you're only 8!!! I really enjoyed your interpretation too. You are a prodigy! When did you start playing flute? How many hours a day do you practice? It tooks a lot of time to play as you do...

  • @alestesia Hi, I really appreciate your comment!!! I started the flute when I was 3. This Image video was 2 summers ago when I was 8. I practice about 2 hours a day, sometimes 2.5. Do you play the flute too?? Flute is awesome!!! Thanks again!!!

    --Emma

  • Very well done! Amazing.

  • Bravo Emma!!

  • OMG YOU'RE ONLY FRIGGIN EIGHT??????!!!! holy shitzu you make 70 year old James Galway look like an ass. HAHAHA!!!

  • @lilmilyo Hi, Thanks for watching!!! I know you're only being nice and funny, but I can't even joke about James Galway. He's so awesome and the inspiration of all flutists. But I'm happy you like my music!!!

    --Emma

  • @GeoRockMin I wasn't joking about Galway either. You're a prodigy. I'm sorry you took offense to what I said

  • I could pass this song to play it myself? Pliis:)

  • I can spend the score plis

    From: Lauras *

  • I don't understand??

  • You are the best!!:)

  • How do you practice your scales? What was your approach to learning them?

  • I practice scales every day. I pick a key sig and do every major/minor, mode, and arpeggio in 3s, 4s and 5s with different dynamics.

  • Is this memorized?

  • Hi, Thanks for watching!!! Yes, I always try to memorize my pieces.

    --Emma

  • Great playing Emma! What grade is this piece?

  • Hi, Thanks for watching!!! I don't think I understand your question. :( Sorry!!!

    --Emma

  • Wow!

I am just shocked because you played it so amazingly!!

I am just asking but... how do you tell a story with a piece of flute music???

Sorry, I just wanted to know..

    From Haelin

  • Like with a book, you can read words or you can tell a story.. So I think of a piece the same way. I don't want to play notes, I want to play a story. Does that make sense?

    --Emma

  • Hi, Emma!!

You really helped me alot!! Thank you!!

I am playing with an orchestra in the opera house with my violin in June!!

If my parents record me playing I will upload it to YouTube!!!

    From Haelin

  • I am your fan O.O

  • Thanks!!! You're so nice!!! Have fun playing your flute!!!

    --Emma

  • wow you are amazing!!!!! I am 13 and i play the flute and im in grade five but you're only 8!!

  • So I've been listening to a lot of your videos and I mean, wow. You are REALLY good! And it's not just the way that you sound, your tone, or how fast you can hit the notes... The way that you let the song speak is amazing!

  • Wow, it's really nice of you to say that!!! The flute is such a magical instrument!!! I'm so happy to play it!!!

    --Emma

  • wow. she is really good i play the flute too, im in 6th grade and she plays way better than me!

  • She is incredible. Lovely interpretation, technique and sound.

  • Very nice.

  • Was this piece difficult for you to play?

Because you sound terrific it seems to me that you only took like 5 minutes to learn the notes!1

  • Thanks!!! This is a tricky piece. But the notes are just the first step. Then you have to decide what the piece says and how to say it. I like that part of learning a new piece. And you can use lots of imagination in Image.

  • yo emma its PJB this is the first vid i watched of you. good luck. also what state in america do you live in? i also made a video of me playing my flute so check out my page!

  • oh! i have a yamaha intermediate model!!! but i'll be getting powell soon because your flute sounds really good!! and it is powell!!!

  • Yes, I play a Powell. I love it so much!!! Everyday I find new colors in it!!! It's the perfect flute for me!!! What do you play?

    --Emma :) :)

  • you are incredible! I wish I could play my horn as well as you play your flute. I LOVE how natural it seems for you... I think a lot of people whom I go to school with (at a music school) could learn from your passion! :) keep playing, girl, you're amazing!

  • Thanks! I love playing the flute!!! But the horn sounds pretty cool too!!!

    --Emma

  • no problem :)

  • Probably played flute in another lifetime, no other explanation really. I hope if she ends up in an orchestra someday for a living she gets in a huge big major one that pays a decent wage. Otherwise ,forget flute as a career.

  • dear child, I have been playing flute for 20 years and I think you are great! Have you applied for any prep departments at any conservatories? You know Mimi Stillman was in the prep department at Julliard with Julius Baker....he discovered her at one of the NFA conventions! Great job at the NY convention, by the way!

  • Thanks!!! There aren't conservatories where I live. I had a great time at NFA. Did you?? Did we meet?? I met so many nice people. It was a flute wonderland!!!

  • BEAUTIFUL performance!!! You have a bright future ahead of you.

  • what book would i find this in?? i really want to play this. it is so pretty

  • Yes, it's amazing music!!! I don't think it's in a book. The music is available on FluteWorld or SheetMusicPlus. Have fun learning and playing!!!! --Emma :) :)

  • You're seriously like the reincarnation of Jean Pierre Rampal. :) I'm so impressed with your mature musical liberty. I studied flute performance in college and am jealous! Don't burn yourself out too early because you have a great talent that you don't want to let go to waste. Good luck and thanks so much for the music.

  • We are both so lucky to be flutists!!!!!!!!

  • Have you played Hungarian Pastorale Fantasie?? I think you would enjoy it!!!

  • I played it a long time ago when I was 5 or 6. It's in the Suzuki books I think. Yes, you are right, I should look at it again!! There's so much beautiful flute music to play!!

  • Thanks for the music!

    =)

  • i think that she´ll be one of the greatest flutists of XXI century! =)

Congratulations and thanks for the music!

    Débora from Brazil

  • Emma, your sound has improved so much!!! It sounds quite mature and full now - beautiful!

  • this is great.

how long does it take u to memorize a peice? how many times do u have to run through it?

  • Hi, Thanks for listening!!!! Usually I have a piece mostly memorized after three or four times through. Listening to a recording really helps too.

    Thanks!!!!

  • i have to play a piece about 50 times through before i memorize it!! youre amazing

  • that is a gorgeous sound....i love the sound of this solo too...after i finish with the poulenc and doppler...i'm thinking this one...i really like it...amazing once again emma!

not gonna lie...really makes me wanna practice...actually...i think i will! bahaha!

  • Your amazing. you have a nice talent. Very excelent job Emma.

  • Every one of the posting of Emma's performances have been phenomenal, but this one is insanely mature. I can only hope that Rachel enjoyed the experience as much as I did. (Tbanks, again, to Emma and family for making this available on YouTube)

  • GORGEOUS. Destined for greatness. I hope nobody ruins her. she's gotten better than the Chaminade days. remarkable. where does this girl live? if she keeps this up she will be a major flutist someday. check out the youtube videos of denis bouriakov, who just got the position of principle flute at the Met Opera, who is 27 years old. She might find much inspiration from this great musician.

  • Fabulous! can't wait to see you perform at Carnegie one day!

  • Haha. I just began work on this for my graduate school auditions (:-P)

  • Emma- It is very rare that a person your age has the technical ability which you possess. What is even more rare is the ability of such a young person to perform with the level of musicality that you do. It is absolutely astounding! Congratulations to you! Congratulations to your teacher(s)! Congratulations to your parents!

  • Wow. I am SO overwhelmed by you! I finished my music degree over a year ago, and played this in my 3rd year- it is an insanely difficult piece- how on earth do you pull this off at such a young age? What a talent you have, you will go SO far with the flute!!! Congratulations!

  • wow! how old did she start taking lessons? because that is one musical genius! dont let this drop Emma because you have a very bright future.

  • well.. this certainly rids of the silly stereotypes we label everyone with.. because they aren't American. Once again thanks Emma.

  • You are absolutely amazing, Emma.

  • Beautiful!! You are a rapid growing real genius, Emma!

  • You never cease to amaze me Emma. You're absolutely brilliant. Your tone is amazing, your musicality is amazing, you're so adorable. Keep it up! :) You've got a huge audience whether you know it or not!

  • Thanks for the encouragement!

  • So, I just got this piece from Flute World and I find myself learning it by watching an 8 year old. What is wrong with this picture? LOL Thank you so much, Emma. :-)

  • Hi A--, Emma thinks it's a funny story, too! Image is such a great piece. Hope you have fun working on it!

  • Ok, I saw the other videos. But this is it. I have to say... this is one talented girl. I'm undergoing my master's in flute performance right now. I just can't believe the level of playing of Emma. She does things that take weeks of practice for me, it seems so natural to her.

Do not let that talent go to waste! It's probably one of the most amazing musical things I've seen on youtube.

  • amazing! You are progressing so beautifully!

  • Bravo, Emma! That was so beautiful that it made these two old flutemakers cry!

    Thank you for posting it!

  • Your comment made Emma smile!

  • I am a retired flute professor, am I very impressed? YES. Congratulations!! If you need an adopted grandfather, just let me know.

  • Thank you! That's one of the nicest things anyone could say!

  • I was listening backstage also!!! I really like that piece! Great job!!!

  • I was backstage hiding. :) Hi Emma!!! Ready for school? :P I will always adore your playing. (And your memory)

  • WOW. GREAT sound, and I can't believe the improvement since the last recording!

I can't wait to see what the future holds for her.

  • Wow.. Bravo!!

  • Amazing!!

  • She looks like a little doll playing flute! She is just the cutest little thing! I would be just beaming all the time if I were her mother. Congrats!

  • You just keep getting better, when can i buy the CD? From a critical point of view ignoring your age etc i feel you just need to give the piece a little more space. Take your time to let the music breathe. But hey you've plenty of time for that! Principal of the Berlin Phil by 10 years at this rate! Bravo Emma.

  • Interpretation has come so far, and the tone improvement is amazing too. Thanks for yet another great video. You inspire me!

  • Hey there kiddo, truly amazing and memorized too. Can't believe how much you have accomplished in your short life. Absolutely FANTASTIC!

  • WOW I am 25 and I am not that good and I have been playing my flute for 12 years!

  • My goodness kiddo. You have such an awesome memory. I can't believe how much you have accomplished in your young life!
