  • 60's SAN ANTOINIO MUSIC Rulz!!!

  • What was the name of the dance hall in SA in that building at the corner of Martin and Zarzamora?

  • @pogoboy2002 I knew it as the VFW hall. It was run by the Veterans during the 60's. My neighbor was a member. I remember going to the dances held on the second floor of the building.

  • @pogoboy2002 It was the VFW. I don't know if it's still there. But it def was a Vet hall. Lots of dances there. I heard the Joe Bravo band with singer Tony Rico doing "Try a little Tenderness", those were magic nights of great SA music...

  • awesome tune pure gold.

  • Omg I used to play this song over & over, both A & B sides. My brother would let me listen to it. I still can listen to it & never get tired of it.

  • I saw them at St Francis in SA @ one of the weekly dances.. Late '60s early 70's.

  • EXCELLENT GROOVE HERE! THANK YOU FOR THE MEMORIES AND THE FUN,TOM D.

  • i love hearing this But i hate looking at the new youtube layout

  • This is a classic example of the fabled West Side sound. The record was cut at Abie Epstein's small studio on General McMullen Avenue (near Culebra Road) that was also the home of great recordings made by Rene & Rene, the Royal Jesters, Little Henry & The Laveer and many others. Viva San Antonio!

  • Superb

  • GREAT TRACK §§§§§§§§§§§§§§

  • Thanks for the info. I think that a deejay on KONO once said one of the members of the group was killed in the Viet Nam conflict. Is that true?

  • @thewoodlandsrails None of them died in Viet Nam as far as I know. They were all in the Air Force and two of them at least were air traffic controllers. Jack Martinez is the only one we have made contact with and he lives in Houston. Sure would like to know where the others are.

  • Were there two separate versions of this released by The Commands in 1964 and 1966? Were there different singers on the two versions?

  • @thewoodlandsrails The Commands version was released in San Antonio on the Dynamic label in early 1966 and was also released on the Backbeat label. The O'Jays released a version sometime later. Could have been in late 1966 or early 1967.

  • @jpm14308 dood the ojays no time for you was realeased in the 60s the commands version was realesed in the 90s look it up

  • @satch0phile Sorry to disagree with you. The song was written by Henderson and Peeples, two of the original Commands stationed in San Antonio's Randolph Air Force Base about 1964. The O'Jays covered the song later. I know this for a fact. I use to see the Commands perform this song live and I know the recording session backup band "The Dell-Tones" members personally. In any case, they both recorded a nice song.

  • @jpm14308 well i think the o'jays did the song first

you thought the comands did first

so lets look it upand get back to me

  • Comment removed

  • @satch0phile Hey's if you happen to own a copy of this you can clearly see that this was written by Henderson and Peoples on The O'Jays record of "No Time For You", Those two being members of The Commands, Just thought I'd put my two sense in. Both versions are pretty nice, This one got a lil more soul though!...

  • @jpm14308 I also saw them live in San Antonio while a high school student at Central Catholic.

  • only in san anto gotta love it !!! also from san antonio (little joe and the harlems).....puro san anto .....thx

  • Glad to hear this song, really enjoyed it.

  • I was in the San Antonio area when this came out and you could not turn on a radio without hearing this song. It came out the same time that Roy Head released "Treat Her Right",. Takes me back....I was surprised that it didn't become a national chart hit.

  • good song

  • 1951 lead sled cruising . Mr. Drag ass

  • I was stationed at Lackland A.F.B. when this came out. Still a classic

  • @gigiwoe Jack Martinez was at the show Saturday. He is the second person from the left in the group picture.

  • I'm a HS graduate from Charlotte, NC - class of '68. This was WAY big at the beach (for those who understand Beach Music, you'll know what I mean) and in Charlotte in 67/68. Have a copy somewhere. You can convert this to MP3 using Dirpy (google that). Great, Great record. And the flip is also good. (Hey it's Love). Playing it at our 42nd HS reunion in a couple of weeks (our 60th Birthday Bash - Myers Park HS - Charlotte, NC). Didn't realize this group was from San Antonio. Thanks!

  • @ppqptdf

I remember them playing this often on Oldies 93 in Winston-Greenesboro during my time in NC in the 90's.

San Antonio obviously WAS a Texas hot bed in the mid 60's for Beach-style music from the East Coast.

KONO 101 (San Antonio) plays very same music format as Oldies 93 in NC.

  • KONO 101 -- San Antonio!

  • This song was so popular on the radio back in the day!

  • This is one of the best song to come out of san antonio, they were all in the air force at the time. I saw the perform this song at a dance i went to, the royal jester back them up. they had white gloves on, i stood 20 feet from the stage. in 66 i was 14 yrs old and this was the greatest sound i have ever heard.

  • Thank You jpm14308 for clearing that up in my mind. Muchas Gracias

  • Wasn't it the Sunliners that backed The Commands on the recording at Abe Epstein Studio ?

  • love this song!!! my father is Victor Montez ... hes playing guitar in the back, great music!!!!!!!

  • this is the song of songs , this got me through alot of bad times . my father used to play it when we were young in the 80's and when i started to date in the 90's , and got my heart broken , this was there for me .

  • i got to see the group at a dance here in san antonio in66.can't believe they're music still moves me to get up and dance and sing right along with them, those were the good days!!

  • I married Jack 33 years ago...would love a copy of No TIme for You...Any idea how to get a copy?

  • @Remi8619

I have copy to give you, as well as a few pics and a great newspaper article from The Light. I met Isaac many years ago as a teenage disc jockey at KONO.

  • @45factory This song is big on "Beach Music" charts in the Carolina's.Would love to see the Pic;s if you could e-mail to me.

  • @Remi8619 Manuel "Bones" Arregon (Jesters Drummer) told me Jack lives in Houston. Does he know where any of the other original Commands are?

  • @Remi8619 It's been re-issued on "Wax Museum"label saw one on e-Bay for 5 bucks!

  • this song will always kick ass-needs to be played in the radio so it continue to live on..tejano stations especially! Great Sound to play for your lady and cruise in the park like brack in san anto, memorial park in hou-ston

  • This song will always kick-ass, needs to be played in the radio especially the so called tejano station so it can continue to live on and the new generation can experience what SOUNDS really were like to our dads n moms when they were young. I'm 16 and my dad tells me stories when he was my age and the songs he listened to during his junior high and high school days. Viva la musica and viva my parents!

  • west side san antonio shit right here....

  • I live in San Antonio! Love this song!

  • Thanks for posting this one. It helped me get trough basic training at Lackland AFB (in 1966)

  • thats right. proudhawkeye! i wuldint have any other way either... i love my city! puro westside!

  • So happy there's Youtube to discover such fantastic songs!

  • my all time favorite! im so proud to be from the westside of san antonio!!

  • There Hi quakatrine,

I proudly second that emotion, I too hail from my beloved Westside, although I have been living in Houston since 1990.

I always tell people that I meet that this college educated Barrio Boy with an advanced degree is from the Westside (Lanier Class of 1982) and I would not have it any other way!! Everytime I hear this song it reminds me of my barrio where I grew up and KONO, AM 86! QUE BUENO!!

  • Who was the lead singer for this song?

  • I believe it was Sam Peeples (left) He and Dan Henderson (right) usually sang lead. Jack Martinez is second from the left. I can't remember the gentleman's name between Jack and Dan. Anyone remember his name?

  • Since the commands were stationed in the air force, do you know if any of them had to go to vietnam or elsewhere?

  • Sam Peoples went to Thailand in 1967 and I don't remember if Dan Henderson, Jack Martinez or Emanuel Grace had to go, as I left shortly after Sam for Nam.

  • jpm this is Webtrain..(I played with Dino & The Deltones) I recorded a blues song I made up at home..I need assist how to upload to You Tube..also I have some old pics of the bands I used to play with in SA.. i placed i the movie

..i created it using windows movie maker

  • The one person we all forget was Emanuel Grace(4th Command).

  • @jpm14308 Peoples!

  • Second one is 'No Time For You' by the Commands from 1964. Dan Henderson on lead. This group was formed while the guys were in the Air Force stationed in San Antonio.

  • Bobby Ben was the singer of this song. He was sent to vietnam soon after. Bobby resently passed away from cancer God Bless Him.

  • Sorry, Sam Peoples was the lead and also wrote the song(1966). Sam and I were best friends at Randolf AFB. Sam wrote the song on a graveyard shift in the control tower, he and I were air traffic controllers.

  • Sam Peoples was lead. The record label mistakingly was printed Dan Henderson-Sam Peoples. The day Sam saw the label he was livid. Dan sang all the flip(Hey It's Love).

  • Great music...absolutely.

  • Great Texas Northern soul,Good Post

  • i use to see this cats at la villeta downtown. the commands were a few cats from lackland just passin thru. a great flashback.

  • loven this rOla .

  • Pache (Roger R.) was on drums on that recording..I played with him with Dino & Deltones 1964..and later with George Rivas...drummer I played with and had a lot of drive and great time was Bobby Solis,,rip..he played with the band I was with

a year before he was killed in the fatal car crash..

  • Who was all in the group?

  • For you music dudes out there. Listen to the

double hit on the Bass Drum. 1 slap on snare and 2 hits bass. Blues groups started using them alot.

  • I fucking love these words..

  • I've searched everywhere for this cut, where can I dl a copy??

  • can some one please tell me where i can download this song i've been looking for it for like 2 weeks now and i really want it thanks

  • Hi there Kissingsin,

Send me an email to Proudhawkeye and I will be more than happy to send you the song as MP3 File!!

  • ST Pius is having a Valentines dance Feb 2..with Rudy T (Reno Bops) preforming from 8pm-12am..cover is $12.50 a person..not sure if sold at the door...

  • That will be a good gig..I was playing with Ramiro Cerevra Orch between mid 1980's and Rudy T (of the Reno Bops would have a gig or two with us..he was also playing the bass..

also I played with the Felix Solis Orch '(70-80-90's)and we had Roger Alvarez (Roger and The Ethics) on vocals..I heard he had passed away..

I also played with George Rivas(Continental Orch) and recorded "Eres Tu" back in the 70's with Manny studios on Flores street..

  • Ok I will contact you..I just remembered,,a

senior moment...Victor's, brother used to play bass with Sunny & The Sunglows? Chente?

  • Yes. Chente is also a good friend. He and Rudy Palacios will be getting together to perform in March of '08 at an oldies dance. It would be great to get as many of the Dell-Tones together for a reunion.

  • Ohhhhh...I want to go! My mother raised me on these wonderful words/sounds. I can't stop frolicing. I blame it all on her and These Music Makers of the World. Thanks for your wonderful insight. I have been trying to find out if Victor Montez still performs. Do you know?

  • Victor no longer performs. He is in poor health. That's him playing guitar on this song. His brother Chente Montez and Rudy Palacios who played for Sunny & the Sunliners for many years will be performing on Feb 2 at St. Pius Church in San Antonio. Rudy wrote Smile Now Cry Late and Put Me In Jail. Should be a great dance.

  • Thank you for taking the time to share. I am saddened to hear about Victor Sr. His son is a awesome musician and i hope to hear more of him in the future. Is the St. Pius Church event open to the public? I will try to goggle it. Thanks again for sharing.

  • Hey Chente is my dad. I haven't seen him in a long time. I would like to know where you are going to play in March. Thanks

  • I played with Dino(Dimas Garza) & The Del Tones 1964, when I left the Deltones to go play with Litle Henry & The Laviers, most of the band went on to back up The COMMANDS, who were mostly in the military.

On drums was Roger Ruiz, Bass Pete Granato, Keyboards-Johnny Zaragoza, and I think Victor

L? on guitar. This song was recorded in San Antonio in 1965. Later Ernest Guribay (Randy's brother) went on to sing with the Commands. I have a picture of these guys somewhere.

    Bobby SM

  • Great info Bobby SM. I believe it was Victor Montez on guitar. Dimas, Ernie and I are good friends. I would like to talk to you at your convenience. Please contact me.

  • Recorded in 1964-released on a number of labels including Dynamic and Back Beat.

Very neat pic sleeve-never seen that one before.

  • Thanks for the info. I couldn't remember when I bought this back in the 60's. I know it was within days after its release.
