I have this disorder and its not healthy. It makes you depressed and disgusted at what you see in the mirror and makes me lift all day. Even with a ac joint injury I would feel small and do shoulders and raises. Very stressful and uncomfortable. I wear sweatshirts even when im hot cause I feel scrawny. Im 6'4" 235 pounds with 8% bodyfat but I still feel tiny and envious of others who may not be in as good shape. It sucks.
I too have BODY DYSMORPHIC DISORDER/MUSCLE DYSMORPHIA-(BIGOREXIA). I was clinically diagnosed with it. It is a REAL MENTAL ILLNESS/DISORDER. Bodybuilding is not a mental disorder BUT again, BIGOREXIA IS. For me, in reality im 240lbs and have a decent build, BUT my BIGOREXIA makes me think that im a 140lb anorexic person. Having " dedication, commitment, desire, are NOT MENTAL DISORDERS either, AGAIN, BIGOREXIA IS.
this video is the worst thing i have ever seen, some loser has TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS and im guessing its some sickly skinny dork who got beat up by a big fucker. Stop being jealous of people who have the will power and determination to become stonger and do what they can with their body. TAKE THIS BULLSHIT VIDEO OFF YOUTUBE NOBODY NEEDS PSYCHIATRIC HELP BECAUSE THEY WANT TO GET BIG!!!!!!!!!!
@wardude155 That's a lame ass comment because my professor actually sent us all the link to this video and she uses it for her teachings and this is extremely unhealthy. You're probably the skinny dork
This video is probably the biggest bullshit on youtube! Bodybuilder are always happy with what they have reached so far because only this optimism makes it possible to gain more muscel! (You cant build muscel when you have a depression it simply doesnt work!). This video puts a wrong view over people with the best discipline in the world! Your body is the only thing you really own so take care of it!
traptorolip - I'll take your coments with a pinch of salt thank you. I prefer to listen to those in the know with extensive reserach, for example: The Adonis Complex: The Secret Crisis of Male Body Obsession • Making the Body Beautiful: A Cultural History of Aesthetic Surgery • Body Modification
Harrison G. Pope, Jr., M.D, Katherine A. Phillips, M.D., and Roberto Olivardia, Ph.D
of course depressed people can keep bodybuilding if they think ultimately it will cure their depression??
its not depression, its simply wanting more muscle and doing anything you can to get it, giving up friends, family, school, work, anything to get to the size you want to be. i know this cause i have it, and alot of what he says is right. i refuse help, cause i know if i do, ill never get big.
I don't believe that there are such things. Americans were always know as lazy people, compares to others, but they are hypocrite. If your too skinny your criticize, your to fat you get critize, and now that your fit they call you Bigorexia WTF what is this world coming to. Man i Cant believe this shit !
Some of you need to calm down. Muscle dysmorphia (or bigorexia) is a recognized condition similar to anorexia. I suffered from this through high school. I couldn't meet a guy without comparing muscle size to him and worrying about who was stronger. Seeing muscular guys made me feel insecure, and I never felt comfortable taking my shirt off at a beach. My obsessive training messed up my left shoulder, and it affects me to this day. THAT'S muscle dysmorphia, not just going to the gym everyday.
194cm and my weight is 104kg:/ i only go to the gym 3 times a week, im ot going on supplements only tuna and creatine:D done this in an half year now;D
I dont think this video is calling all people who lift weights have muscle dysmorphia, but you cannot tell me there are people out there who take it way to far and make freak shows out of the body. You can type in synthol and see what I am talking about.
There is such a huuuuuuuuge difference between normal bodybuilding as a normal sport, that consumes no more than 1 hour a day, and those absurdly pumped up roidbots (not the fake photos I mean, of course)...
Let's not freak out on that one, guys. I work out regularly, my bodyweight is absolutely regular for my type (1.90m tall, 85 kg). Most of my friends are like that. I DON'T have 6 pack abs and my body is no freak show. Check it out in my profile!
well i just hate seeing that pic on articles about the topic. if they want to get good pics just go shoot body builders or somethin not some photoshopped pic of markus ruhl
yes another fictive sickness :)...its the same like the fat people cant stop to be fat :)...most of them of course :)...videos like this are lies and stupid...fake photos, and stupid talking about stupid people what ruined they life.Iam a bodybuilder and its simple my will to do this kind of hobby sport and lifestyle...because its all about this three things.
muscle dysmorphia is like the male version of anorexia, it's no v common but it is real. Not all bodybuilders have it, but when it becomes an extreme unheathy obsession then it's a problem.
if you saw the best lecturer of harvard for example.would you say that he has studying dysmorfia?NO of course not although he may study all day/.or if you saw a bussinesman tha works all day..is the same kind of thing.every person has some things that he wants to be better, just is different for every one.i really think that you have never tried that.you should try some exercise.dont look things in a conservative way.i would like an answer if you think i am wrong and tell me your idea about it
i am sure that you are the kind of guy that was always not the center of attention although you wanted to be.you have never done exercise and you dont know what is the feeling of that....and what is bad about perfection?everybody wants to improve themselves in different aspects, bodybuilding is justone.ANCIENT GREEKS said:A HEALTHY MIND CAN ONLY LIVE IN A HEALTHY BODY.and believe me they knew about sports...and someone who has a good body should be respected because he has hurt a lot to make that
bullshit, dont give me that... Thats not real at all, thats Photo Shop and the guy is Markus Ruhl, winner of the 2002 ifbb mr.olympia. That is not Markus. Think before you talk.
that is absolutely your opinion, and the very extreme case of it. i have muscle dysmorphia, but not to the extent that i will take drugs or count the gym first on my priorities. i just fit it in whenever i can and for as long as i can.
I obviously cannot say this for sure, but there is a good chance that you do not have dysmorphia. One of the main factors in any psychological disorder is that it is pervasive to the point that it interfers with the functioning of someone's life. You do not take dangerous drugs, or make negative life choices to ensure a workout, so your quest to be stronger is healthy. It's like depression, many people from time to time get sad, clinical depression is something entirely different.

Oh good grief!
"They dedicate their lives to weightlifting"
And what's wrong with that? I know so many people who dedicate their lives to sitting on their sofa *watching* sports on TV. What's worse?
"They are willing to break the law..."
What about all the people I see driving 100 MPH on the freeway who will eventually end up killing SOMEBODY ELSE?
There's nothing wrong with a guy trying to build muscle and be strong. People are meant to be strong.
