Akira didn't officially leave. Hes now freelance, his contract with Konami expired. That doesnt mean that he wont work on new SH soundtracks, though Dan Licht (Dexter) is composing the music for Silent Hill 8.

1. Silent Hill was originally inhabited by Native Americans, who performed rituals made of human sacrifice.

2. Settlers of Silent Hill were almost completely wiped out by a epidemic.

3. It was used as a POW camp during WW2.

4. A cult found out about the native americans and continued the rituals.

5. A drug war happened.

All those deaths and psychological traumas from those events has caused 2 dimensions inhabited by monsters and nightmares to exist.

Uh, the character wasn't Harry in the movie. Anyways, the mother and child were in a different dimension from the father's dimension. So one of the groups were still in Silent Hill's mist.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a POW camp for WWII, but was rather a camp for captured Southern soldiers during the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era. Unless they added this in Homecoming, which I haven't gotten around to finishing; the Reconstruction tidbit was from SH2, where they implied that the Pyramid Heads in the portraits are the wardens/executioners from the Reconstruction camp.

Yeah Akira left shortly after the game was released. He did say he'd return to do more Silent Hill as long as Konami contacted him (which I hope happens, I heard Konami just announced they've got a new SH in the making for the 360, PS3, and PC [hopefully it won't be like Homecoming...]).

For now he works at Grasshopper Manufacturer, Suda 51's company. He even composed some tracks for No More Heroes 2 (namely, the tracks that play during the battles with Matt Helms, Ryuji, and Alice).

@KAKURANBONI No it isn't true. Akira Yamaoka worked on Shattered Memories as a consultant and has said he REALLY loved how the game and story turned out and that he was genuinely shocked by the twist ending. He did the game's music and he is NOT leaving Konami.
