Basically it's for many reasons. It was written in a female's range, which explains why it is generally played by a woman, but also 1) the flying harness on a boy... not comfortable... 2) once a young boy's voice changes, he's out, that's why in Billy Eliot the minute his voice changes, they get a new actor to play him.

name is Jecko. Right? anyway, he supposedly gets stabbed in Part 12 by Peter Pan. Jecko goes in cabin and lets out a bloodcurling cry after Black Bill gets killed. But Jecko is alive in part 14? why?
I thought so. Because this one horrible cast I saw they pronounced it Seeko and ruined it. They ruined the whole musical. Turning Hook into a gay guy, making Peter Pan so feminine, making Wendy boring as hell. It was an awful production.
I love this Hook, he's third best after Jason Isaacs and Paul Schoeffler. But he says a line wrong, he says "Someone blew out the light", it's supposed to be "SomeTHING blew out the light"
Michael sprinkled the dust on her at the beginning, and she flew to Neverland sort of on her own, and spent most of her time with the Lion and Ostritch and Kangaroo. I forget how she meets up with Peter and the others, but yea I used to own this on VHS so I remember that much.....
Peter Pan does NOT HAVE to be a girl. Why the hell is Peter Pan always a girl! Peter Pan is supposed to be a boy!!! I love Mary Martin and Cathy Rigby, but it is not supposed to a girl! That has been my dream role forever and now it will never happen!
Stop being jealous- Barrie wrote the role for a women, it is to be played by a women. It woudl take a LOT of effort to train 5 different pre-teen boys to play a role that is far too huge for them.

@meganxhole thats not actually the reasoning behind why peter is played by a woman, it was because a woman was smaller and lighter to lift to fly around stage. and a man would be too big and their voices too deep. a woman was the right size, and voice was passable for a young boy.. and back when the play was first written kids wouldnt have been allowed to act on stage. same as to why mr darling and hook are the same actor, its how children portray thier father when he is mean, as the bad guy.
super !!! i really love this fight when the lost boys, the indians, and their animal friends fight against the pirates. Also, a final confrontation between Peter (Mary Martin), and Hook (Cyril Ritchard) !!!! lol

joev688 4 years ago
BECAUSE, Peter Pan is supposed to be a young boy.
Any older boys, mature enough to play such a role, are TOO mature.
And, a real younger boy might not be able to play this role because it's so huge.
So, a girl is perfect for the part.

No, a girl is not perfect. It's a bad idea.

a girl isnt perfect,
they are often well cast tho and do suit the role.
but young enough boys who can carry a show like this 8 nights a week are pretty hard to find!!
