Basically it's for many reasons. It was written in a female's range, which explains why it is generally played by a woman, but also 1) the flying harness on a boy... not comfortable... 2) once a young boy's voice changes, he's out, that's why in Billy Eliot the minute his voice changes, they get a new actor to play him.

Any older boys, mature enough to play such a role, are TOO mature.

And, a real younger boy might not be able to play this role because it's so huge.

Stop being jealous- Barrie wrote the role for a women, it is to be played by a women. It woudl take a LOT of effort to train 5 different pre-teen boys to play a role that is far too huge for them.

My dream role is to play Toby in Sweeney Todd, never gonan happen. Its feasible for a female to play him, but not done.

Tradition is a huge part of Peter Pan.

@meganxhole thats not actually the reasoning behind why peter is played by a woman, it was because a woman was smaller and lighter to lift to fly around stage. and a man would be too big and their voices too deep. a woman was the right size, and voice was passable for a young boy.. and back when the play was first written kids wouldnt have been allowed to act on stage. same as to why mr darling and hook are the same actor, its how children portray thier father when he is mean, as the bad guy.

super !!! i really love this fight when the lost boys, the indians, and their animal friends fight against the pirates. Also, a final confrontation between Peter (Mary Martin), and Hook (Cyril Ritchard) !!!! lol
