This is on the Bullet with Butterfly Wings single, so it's of the "meloncholy" erea. The cd of the single is probably my favorite out of the Aeroplane Flies High box set. It's got a bunch of 80's covers like Clones (we're all) and Destinations unknown. Check it out! (ps. please don't kill me over miss splellinks or other grammmatical errrors.)
i have to say i like this hazed out take of this song alot, i didnt even realised they covered it until i felt the urge to listen to the original on here then saw this in the suggestions. Is this around the time of "adore"
Blondie are in the rock and roll hall of fame and their on the rock star walk in Los Angels. I like this version intresting Debbie love the smashing Pumkins and the Pumkins were influenced by Blondie so NO one is gonna kick anyones arse
It's a "dream" - seems to me th SP had a great idea and I think it works. Is it "beautiful"? Does it sound like "Blondie"? No. That's because it's the SP.
I'm not afraid to stand my ground against all the people who hate this cover. its not the best cover ever, but its pretty awesome. they put a laid back, trip-hop, psychedelic twist on a cool song. its a good cover because it transforms the song in a good way, I like fast songs that are slowed down, and its just chill. most bands cover easy, obvious songs. how many bands cover use somebody by kings of leon, or a weezer song or bon jovi or something. this is awesome.
This version is absolutely amazing and so is the classic original. They are so different from each other, kudos to SP for making it so different but yet retain the vibe of the original. Both versions are brilliant!
from Gish to Aeroplane, I think Smashing Pumpkins covered what was remaining to be covered in Alternative Rock music grounds. I think BIlly was right to say Rock is dead, there's no more room for innovation.
I just don't understand this seething hatred of reinterpretations of other people's music. Because that's what this is, it's a reinterpretation, it's not a cover. A cover is an attempt to recreate the sound of the original artist. A cover is what you get when you go see an imitation Elvis. This is their take on this song. A song they obviously respect, or they wouldn't bother with it. Better or worse? You decide. But it most certainly doesn't subtract from the original.
@SwordsDragonsAndCoke lol, you're such an idiot its unbelieveable, me stating my opinion is not me being uninformed or unaware, its my bloody opinion, and what am i being informed of or being made aware of by listening to this song? im not so im not being ignornat
. its like me saying you're ignorant for disliking a particular thing or person
AND FYI, thats how opinions are stated you idiot omg, i actually can't believe your stupidity!
@SwordsDragonsAndCoke i dont think you're listening to a thing im saying to you...calling an opinion a fact is NOT being ignorant and even then, thats not what im doing.
if you look back at my first comment i didnt say "this song sucks because its nothing like the original, i said "its the worste cover of any song ever". and THATS my OPINION , i never said it was a fact.
in fact i respect the song because its so different to the original, dont like it but respect it.
@cloudnine500 no ive grown sick of arguing with a random person about the metaphysical definition of opinion, specifically one who tries to impress their opinions on other people as if they were facts
@SwordsDragonsAndCoke LOOL you're SUCH A FUCKING IDIOT I CANT BELIEVE IT! METAPHYSICS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS ARGUMENT SO SHUT THE FUCK UP WITH ALL OF THIS "METAPHYSICAL DEFINITION" SHIT, I AM NOT TRYING TO CHANGE ANYONES MIND, IM EXPRESSING MY FUCKING OPINION.
NOW DO YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY AND EVERYONE ELSE A FAVOUR AND GO FUCKING KILL YOURSELF
@SwordsDragonsAndCoke LOOL no no no i know what metaphysics is but i dont think you know what you're talking about when you say "the metaphysical definition of opinion" there is no metaphysical definition of a bloody "opinion" i gave my point of view of this cover and so is my "opinion"
How weak and embarrassing to do this to such a powerful and goregous Blondie song........ I hate when people do this to magical music. How f*cking weak and frankly, creepy.
You say it lacks melody, is out of tune, etc. So what if it does? It's the Smashing Pumpkins' interpretation of the song, and they expressed the cover in their own style. They're one of the most brilliant bands ever, and they maintained that title in every cover they've done; they're not trying to be something they're not by trying to fake Blondie's sound. This cover is original, and that's the point of a cover: Originality. Not being a poser.
Wow, you honestly don't hear any passion or feeling in this song? And you don't think it sounds dreamy? Thats pretty interesting. Thats like someone eating chocolate and saying ti has no flavour :P You should try to come up with a better excuse for not liking a song next time
Yes that;'s exactly like eating chocolate and saying it has no flavour....or maybe the fuck not. Honestly you need to get a grip on what "opinion" is. Personally I think this screws the song up and sounds only like someone dreaming on LSD. It has taken the liveliness out of the song and i P-E-R-S-O-N-A-L-L-Y do not enjoy it.
haha are you serious? *I* need to get a grip on what an opinion is? Listen closely, ok? Please try to stay with me here. Liking or not liking a song, that is an opinion. Claiming the song is missing elements. that is a criticism. Criticisms are supposed to be facts. inarguable. Its fine that you don't like the song, that is an opinion. However your claims lack merit. Therefore, you lack credibility. Which leads you your opinion, being worthless. Go back to reading Twilight. And get over yourself
ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS. If you are you need a better education and to listen closely. CRITICISMS are not fucking fact you joke, a criticism is what ANYBODY PERSONALLY dislikes about ANYTHING. Are you telling me that you take what every movie or music critic says in reverence as fact?? You're a fanboy who can't take it that someone doesn't like one song, and incredibly out of line to call anyone's opinion worthless. Total joke honestly fuck sake "criticism is fact"WTF is that about you idiot.
haha. You are beyond help, little girl, and way out of your league. As I have already stated, you can like the song or not, I do not care. And yes, for anyones critique to be worth while, professional, or not, they need to break down the work they are critiquing based on what is actually present in the peice they are attempting to analyze. You need to stop arguing for the sake of arguing. What I am attempting to communicate is not a difficult concept to grasp. Go bother your parents.
I don't care how old you are, I was referring to the capacity that you display. And I wasnt referring to youtube, I was referring to myself. And yes, in order for a criticism to be worth anything, it must be a fact. For instance "the guy rapping in this song ruins it". Is there someone rapping in this song? No. So is that criticism valid? No. Someone rapping in this song is not an "opinion", it is attacking an aspect of the song, that is not even there. You need to learn objectivity.
You need to learn that saying "this song has no passion" is an OPINION!!!!! And capacity that I display? Wow it's excellent how you can judge my level of intelligence through five 500 character comments on youtube. I couldn't possibly be the kind of person who's doing a fucking Law degree now could I?
Woooow an 18 year old attempting to acquire a degree in Law. I can not express how impressed I am. Expecially after I have explained numerous times what an opnion is, in terms a 7th grader could understand, and you still don't get it. Claiming the song has no passion is not an opinion. It is like saying the song has no drums. The song either has drums, or it doesn't. It is not for you to determine. They ought to explain this stuff in children's books, like Tiwlight and Harry Potter.
For a start you are very very wrong. I made a criticism of the song yes, a criticism that was my opinion and you need to accept this. I FELT THAT the song has no passion. And if you're stil not convinced I studied Eng Lit and half of the critics disagree with each other so explain how criticism is FACT. And whatever, yeh I have a few Twilight videos but the movie was shit and the books were overrated. Harry Potter is on the other hand excellently written so shows how much you know.
No, I am not wrong, I don't give a shit if half of critics disagree with each other. Am I supposed assume that they don't have shit for brains, because they are qualified critics? Am I just supposed to accept everything they say, because someone gave them a piece of paper, or a title? You're so far gone. Excellently written? Is it not a book about a bunch of kids fighting an evil wizard and casting spells and having little crushes on each other and solving mysteries? Pretty grown up shit.
For a start it doesn't matter what it's about it's about the standard of the writing you idiot. And so far gone??? Ok then, put it this way. Aristotle stated that a tragic hero had to be someone of high standing while Arthur Miller claimed the opposite. Two of the most famous writers in the world making two famous critical remarks. Which wrong is wrong then by your misguided standards?
Yes because now that I've finished school I still have homework... And look, you need to accept that saying a criticism was fact was a stupid thing to say. Whatever yes, you lovethis cover and I on the other hand feel it is a shadow of the original. What I said may have been a criticism in that it degraded the song but that doesn't make it fact and to argue otherwise is just stupid. I don't understand why you can't accept this it's simple. You l ike song. Me no like song.
What? I never said I loved the song, because, I do not. However, I will defend the song is someone is making false claims against it. I would defend something that I absolutely hated if people were making false claims about it. If people are going to make claims that are bullshit, I am going to call them on it, regardless of my personal feelings. Like I said, it is called objectivity.
No but in Artistotle's time he believed that it was. And the tragedies wer eusually about kings, e.g. "Oedipus the King" where as Miller challenged that idea with "Death of a Salesman" and Willy Loman.
And also the belief was that a king had further to fall and effected more people thus - Aristotle's belief had some backing. HOWEVER doesn't make him right or wrong.
Hey don't go using my not giving a shit about literary terms to try to come on top of this one. I'm not trying to debate. I'm saying, that if your comment was made from a personal position, it should have read "I fail to recognize the passion and feeling in this song" , not stating it as an observation, as you demonstrated by your initial comment. Please tell me this was clear enough for you this time around.
Saying "I fail to recognize" etc etc would stop it from being my opinion because in saying I was failing to recognise something would be saying it was there in the first place but I don't agree it is. Now you need to get off your high horse because you sound like an idiot trying to sound like an intellectual. I've grown tired of this pathetic arguement. Oh and sorry my literary comments were too high brow for someone of your calibre - didn't mean to belittle you with words you didn't know...
It IS there. It is impossible to agree or disagree with that term, because it is simply the way it is. Which means, it was never an opinion in the first place, you were just flat out wrong. Admitting to which is something you've obviously had problems with in your past. Which is unfortunate, as it makes it very hard to grow, if you are not aware of the areas you need to develope. Which means, you'll be 16 forever. Keep using school to make yourself feel smart. Cover those issues up!
I'm pretty sure it was commonly accepted that the earth was flat in those days. Are you saying that they weren't wrong, they just merely had an opposing opinion?
And also, not sure what the fuck your response about a law degree was about apart from some twisted and misguided form of sarcasm. And you need to take a step back here because you don't actually know an awful lot about what you're talking about - what with stating criticism is FACT, something I can't get over. Can you not understand that a critcism is relative??? If I say someone's hair is bad that's a critcism, does that make it fact?? Criticism is just someone's opinion - informed or not.
If someone's hair is awful (Its nice that you devote yourself to such rivetting topics) and you say that its awful, then that is fine. But if it is not awful, and you say that it is, then you are wrong. It is hard to get much more simple than that. Putting value to something that IS or IS NOT, is not an opinion. It is attempt to determine qualities in the subject at hand.
Ok bother my parents, well I only have one parent to start and secondly I'm 18 nearly 19 so don't patronise me with "little girl". And I'm fairy much aware that youtube is certainly not out of my fucking league. Secondly, you are the idiot that stated that criticism meant fact. And also, I'm not the one arguing here. I stated my own opinion on the song and you felt the need to attack me and tell me I was worthless.
I've never liked this version. Dar's voice is too creepy in the beginning.. If Billy had just done this himself or if she had sang the entire song the way she did her 2nd verse I'd like it more.
Thank you for posting this. I'm currently trying to track down all the B-Sides featured in TAFH. I'm actually only missing "You're all I've got tonight", so I'd be grateful if you could post that ;) Cheers.
No one is giving her a hard time, but if she's really interested in bands with female bass players, there are lots of great bands out there for her to check out.Who says the internet is not educational?Peace.
my bands bassist is a girl...so was the bassist from a perfect circle before she went over to being the other girl bassist from the smashing pumpkins\
This is like one of the only songs featuring D'arcy on vocals right?-Its better than Daydream I think? whata ya think? I guess Daydream is more original.
This is how covers should be done. With the original spirit of the peice still in tact, but with a grace and beauty that is uniquely of the band performing it.
Of course this version is more peaceful, that is what they were going for. Blondie's version is so different and anyone can easily say that they like Blondie's version more because it's more powerful and energetic. I like both very much but to say that one version blows the other one away is such an overstatement IMO. However this version's ending drags out so long and the electronic sound of it ruins the more natural feel of the rest of the song.
smashing pumpkins made 2 covers of my favourite band: blondie and fleetwood mac, now i understand why i liked them, they have incorporated some elements of this 2 bands in their music, obviusly mixed with others influences and experiences, what do you think?
This would have been great without the dreadfully annoying and distracting beat ~ I like their take on it, but the beat just sounds tacked on ...

You decide. But it most certainly doesn't subtract from the original.

sangel222returns 2 years ago
What? I never said I loved the song, because, I do not. However, I will defend the song is someone is making false claims against it. I would defend something that I absolutely hated if people were making false claims about it. If people are going to make claims that are bullshit, I am going to call them on it, regardless of my personal feelings. Like I said, it is called objectivity.
gongargongar 2 years ago
And also my point was that it's all about opinion and relativity. Aristotle can't be called wrong but he can't be called right either.
sangel222returns 2 years ago
That is not an opinion. Being of high standing is not a requirement of tragedy, or heroism, and thus not a requirement of tragic heroism.
gongargongar 2 years ago
No but in Artistotle's time he believed that it was. And the tragedies wer eusually about kings, e.g. "Oedipus the King" where as Miller challenged that idea with "Death of a Salesman" and Willy Loman.
sangel222returns 2 years ago
And also the belief was that a king had further to fall and effected more people thus - Aristotle's belief had some backing. HOWEVER doesn't make him right or wrong.
sangel222returns 2 years ago
Oh and also, it doesn't matter what it has to do with heroism - a hero and a tragic hero are two very different things.
sangel222returns 2 years ago
Hey don't go using my not giving a shit about literary terms to try to come on top of this one. I'm not trying to debate. I'm saying, that if your comment was made from a personal position, it should have read "I fail to recognize the passion and feeling in this song" , not stating it as an observation, as you demonstrated by your initial comment. Please tell me this was clear enough for you this time around.
gongargongar 2 years ago
Saying "I fail to recognize" etc etc would stop it from being my opinion because in saying I was failing to recognise something would be saying it was there in the first place but I don't agree it is. Now you need to get off your high horse because you sound like an idiot trying to sound like an intellectual. I've grown tired of this pathetic arguement. Oh and sorry my literary comments were too high brow for someone of your calibre - didn't mean to belittle you with words you didn't know...
sangel222returns 2 years ago
It IS there. It is impossible to agree or disagree with that term, because it is simply the way it is. Which means, it was never an opinion in the first place, you were just flat out wrong. Admitting to which is something you've obviously had problems with in your past. Which is unfortunate, as it makes it very hard to grow, if you are not aware of the areas you need to develope. Which means, you'll be 16 forever. Keep using school to make yourself feel smart. Cover those issues up!
gongargongar 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure it was commonly accepted that the earth was flat in those days. Are you saying that they weren't wrong, they just merely had an opposing opinion?
gongargongar 2 years ago
And also, not sure what the fuck your response about a law degree was about apart from some twisted and misguided form of sarcasm. And you need to take a step back here because you don't actually know an awful lot about what you're talking about - what with stating criticism is FACT, something I can't get over. Can you not understand that a critcism is relative??? If I say someone's hair is bad that's a critcism, does that make it fact?? Criticism is just someone's opinion - informed or not.
sangel222returns 2 years ago
If someone's hair is awful (Its nice that you devote yourself to such rivetting topics) and you say that its awful, then that is fine. But if it is not awful, and you say that it is, then you are wrong. It is hard to get much more simple than that. Putting value to something that IS or IS NOT, is not an opinion. It is attempt to determine qualities in the subject at hand.
gongargongar 2 years ago
Ok bother my parents, well I only have one parent to start and secondly I'm 18 nearly 19 so don't patronise me with "little girl". And I'm fairy much aware that youtube is certainly not out of my fucking league. Secondly, you are the idiot that stated that criticism meant fact. And also, I'm not the one arguing here. I stated my own opinion on the song and you felt the need to attack me and tell me I was worthless.
sangel222returns 2 years ago
Oh and voting my comments as thumbs down, real classy. That will make you right!
gongargongar 2 years ago
not entirely true...listening to this song put me to sleep and during that sleep i was dreaming so maybe they're geniuses...or maybe not
AKAFriendlyJim 2 years ago 7
lol ha well it does have that element certainly. But IMO, it's lost the passion and youth of Blondie's original.
sangel222returns 2 years ago 3
iha's version of "a night like this" is more controversial... i like this one better.

Would have succeed if they were covering Sound-A-Sleep. Lol.

I applaud their totally new take on this classic track. It's actually kinda cool. Having said that, no one can ever, ever top the original. :)

Smashing Pumpkins realy fucked this song up. No one but Debbie Harry and Blondie can sing this song..

this is horrible one of the worsr covers i 've ever heard they should be a shamed of themselves

C'mon man, it's a completely different take on the song. To say that it's the worst cover ever is quite an overstatement.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Darcy's singing sucks ass on this song. She's trying to hard to be cool or something...or maybe her voice is just scratchy from the crack smoke.
MIvarsson99 3 years ago
she's too cool and hot, shut up
long live d'arcy!

well, she´s spending her´s millions in her farm, and you are here saying shit.

I don't have to like everyone who's rich. You must be a total kiss ass or whore if you never criticize rich people.
btw---I used to like D'arcy before she became a bitch and broke up the band with James...
MIvarsson99 3 years ago
Interesting cover, but I don't like the beat in the background.
xXPinkGoddessXx 3 years ago
I've never liked this version. Dar's voice is too creepy in the beginning.. If Billy had just done this himself or if she had sang the entire song the way she did her 2nd verse I'd like it more.

That ending is freaky, but coool.

I like this one, and the original myself.
This one sorta fits the feel of the lyrics more though, if you ask me.
Envelion 4 years ago 3
This is like one of the only songs featuring D'arcy on vocals right?-Its better than Daydream I think? whata ya think? I guess Daydream is more original.
jerseykid211 4 years ago 3
This is how covers should be done. With the original spirit of the peice still in tact, but with a grace and beauty that is uniquely of the band performing it.
Fathoms2004 4 years ago 2
To my ears, this version blows away the original by Blondie.
tyraelhermosa 4 years ago
your ears are broken. Its good- but Blondie is a legend.
Taszu60 4 years ago 2
Yeah Blondie is a lengend, but on a personal basis, i like this one more. It just seems wayy more peacefuller than the original.
jerseykid211 4 years ago 2
Of course this version is more peaceful, that is what they were going for. Blondie's version is so different and anyone can easily say that they like Blondie's version more because it's more powerful and energetic. I like both very much but to say that one version blows the other one away is such an overstatement IMO. However this version's ending drags out so long and the electronic sound of it ruins the more natural feel of the rest of the song.

smashing pumpkins made 2 covers of my favourite band: blondie and fleetwood mac, now i understand why i liked them, they have incorporated some elements of this 2 bands in their music, obviusly mixed with others influences and experiences, what do you think?
kataplero 4 years ago 2
i think you're right. They have class, a sound, a style and good vibrations.

Its cool but Blondie's version is better, though Debbie Harry said recently that she is a fan of smashing pumpkins
