This I remember is the 1988/89 Benson & Hedges Cup. I even remember that rain had cut down this classic match, and gave WI an otherwise easy victory. I guess if I remember correctly Richards ended with 60*. However, on this day, he was so murderous, I have no dount whatsoever , had it gone to the full stretch of the allotted 38 overs, Richards would have still done the job.
All time great! We never saw bradman, sobers and other legends. This man changed the way the game was played before him. Sachin, Lara, Ponting may have better scores, but Richards brought the innovation in Cricket! A genius by birth!

I'm always amazed at how he picked up those fast deliveries just outside off stump and sent them packing for miles over cow corner. There will never be another Viv, that's for sure.
My favourite Batsman of all time. Lara is my 2nd best. How many batsmen do you know today that stride to the crease without a helmet and take the world's best bowling apart? Viv did it against the very best and at times on uncovered pitches.
The rain ruined the game and played straight into the West Indies hands. Any decent team would chase 108 from 18 overs with 10 wickets up their sleeve.
@Parrock1 Nah I think you will find they were booing because of the rain rule back in those days which heavily favoured sides batting 2nd and effectively killed Australia's chances. Australia outplayed the Windies for most of that game, made about 220/4 from about 38 overs, then after taking 2 early wickets, the 2nd rain delay made it 118 from 18 overs, with 8 wickets in hand it was easy.
Hey fuckwit, what sort of a supid comment is that? Saying viv is not a great crickiter. You are a fool. One of the most stupid comments I have ever read on youtube
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i dont consdr viv as d cricketing legend...he didnt seems to have knwldge of cricket....rather he looks like baseball hitter.we hav greats like geff buycot, rohan kanhai, bradman, sachin tendulkar, sunil gavaskar, ricky ponting, rahul dravid, barry rechards.,gary sobers, haneef mohhamd
can he match these great by even 1% of their tech and expertise...no...never
morever if such the case....i would prefer heydan nd virender sehwag much above him...when they play, they produce worth watching more than any
don't be an idiot...this man was great...he destroyed any bowling attack and never lost a series in 6 years. you are only watching his aggressive strokes...this man has batted for a day and half and still end up not out....plz think about what you are saying
The 6 of Merv is brutal, raw Horsepower from Viv.Incredible shot..! Make no mistake ,Viv on his day was easilt the best and most intimidating cricketer!
Notice the boos in the crowd as Desmond Haynes hit the winning runs. Haynes & Richards sprinted off probably bcoz it was starting to drizzle. Was that why they were booed or was it just one eyed aussie dissappointment at having the daylights thrashed out of em. LOL.
Awesome! I was at old Trafford for an ODI in the 1984 "Blackwash" tour. We had the WI at something like 102 - 7. Richards scored 189 and had a 106 partnership with Holding - who scored 12! I remember a straight 6 off Willis that went like a tracer bullet and smashed into the sight screen barely head high.
I wish these greats of the game had the benefit of the Sky sports TV coverage - we'd be able to see the ball sail into row 15 in perfect detail.
@MarkyMarc46 I too remember that innings at Old Trafford. In my opinion it was the most devastating ODI innings of all time. My mate and I, both proud Poms, sat on the settee watching it and actually willing Viv to repeat his classic strokes again and again against England. A very special cricketer. I'd have loved to see him playing 2020 in his prime!
I have watched this video so many times and can't get enough of Viv, what a player he was. Nobody can and will bat like him, look at the way he his pulling, hitting sixes over long on and his shots in the offi side. His swagger and control is amazing. Viv you are the best and God choose you for these special skills. What a legend!
He always seemed to take HUGE risks yet they always came off. Averages mean nothing when you look at this guy. If he played selfishly he would have averaged 70+.
thats how we use to hit em with tennis ball in the garden. this is truly amazing. bowlers of today on flat decks would have needed a helmet against him
Viv is so casual, that some people may even think that batting is the easiest thing in cricket. It looks so simple when he is batting, its almost ridiculous.
Viv Richards may well prove to be the greatest of all batsmen, certainly the most devastating. He has more time and brutal on all bowlers. Imagine if he used the modern bats, they'd disappear into the 2nd tier! Nothing better watching Dennis Lillee & Viv in battle, the best fast bowler of all Vs the Best Bat of the last 60 years. As a kid they were my hero's & they still remain the best ever. Viv would kill em now moreso & 20/20 would suit him. He is the best by a solar system or 2
Yes, this match caused a change to the rules for rain affected matches. The West Indies had belted Australia all summer and were a much better side, but in this match Australia were hard done by. They scored a massive total (230 odd off 38 overs - big even now, but huge back then) and then when the match was reduced further the Windies only had to score at the required run rate for a few overs. The crowd justifiably felt this was unfair. Not to take anything away from Viv's brilliance though.
This man is truly a great batsman. In terms of records Lara and Sachin holds them all, but in terms of all round package and enertainment Vivian is number one.
Good points, but the facts are Viv Never Played For Records. Michael Holding said that he only played for the team, if Viv wanted the records, he would own all of them in the book. He was more than good enough. In terms of talent, he was 40% more talented than the rest, he is still well above Tendulkar, Lara etc. Sobers may have been on Viv's par. Remember VIV twice averaged over 63 in his career & had scored 121 1st Class Centuries as well - the last Modern Player to do so!
MASTER BLASTER ! SMOKIN JOE ! When I was small my father used to call me inside when Vivian Richards was batting. When he got out I went back outside to play.
Even when helmets were introduced he never had worn one, he'd just stand his ground with a cloth cap and chewing gum casually and hoike the ball to all parts of the ground with the greatest of ease!
The master. I've been watching cricket since the late 70's and no batsman has come close to this man for such breathtaking batting. A true genius, there were times when it was impossible to bowl at Sir Viv.
Vivian Richards surely is the best batsman since 1970 and possibly all time, but we have not seen anything of Bradman and the likes who have dominated the scene before Viv. In the recent past Viv is closely followed by Brian Lara. Lara, too, was only one of his kind, and might be on par with Viv in terms of sheer batting talent. There are others, but these two are the best of the lot.
what a great batsmen, one of the very best, who wants to shake the aussies hands, there was a reason why both batsmen ran off, the aussies are rude arrogant cricketers
absolutely fantastic...magnificent...there is no one like him...no one comes close...i guess only gilchrist is somewhere close the viv..tendulkat is his heydays may be was close to viv...but the aura which viv has is not matchable...sometimes i feel sehwag from india is as murderous...
You have to remember though that Gilly, T'kar, Sehwag etc had it easier than Viv with better pitches protective gear (esp the helmet) batsman-friendly rules and inferior attacks. I cant imagine any of these blokes face the likes of Thommo (easily over 100 mph at his peak in the 70s) and other far more dangerous guys than today's without helmet and friendly rules in place on those fast bouncy pitches. Today's champs would'nt face even today's trundlers on today's flat tracks without helmet.
You think only batsmen have developed, not bowlers? I feel every era has a great hero. Besides you just cannot compare Gilly and Sehwag with Sachin. He is the greatest there is, there was.
YOUR OPINION. Mine is that as batsmen Bradman, Richards, Sobers etc were miles and miles ahead of T'kar. And countless others think like that. You have made a super-vague statement like 'batsmen have developed' and 'bowlers have also developed'. Bowlers have been killed through the 90s and this decade with batting tracks dozens of restrictions etc. Batsmen have so much protective gear and fast bowing has declined severely since end-80s. Most of today's heroes would be zeros in the 70s and 80s.
and, your enthusiasm for leaving those scholl-boyish comments are only matched by your level of bias and extremely poor knowledge of cricket. Why wud someone listen to your opinion as to who are the best players when we have experts like richie (benod), tony (greig) n many others (who played the game at the highest level) telling us HOW IT IS along w/ their reasonings and explanations. Surely, they know what they r talking abt unlike 'wanna-be' ppl like u!
T'kar had his helmet when he got rapped by Donald, Shoaib, Lee, Jones etc. Thommo (who bowled to the KING) was a 110 mph at his peak (hitting sightscreen after first bounce on the pitch) and others like Snow, Lillee, Imran, the WI quicks, even Willis, Hadlee, Pascoe, Hogg etc would have smashed T'kar without helmet and protective gear to 100 pieces on those 70s and 80s pitches in the absence of batsmen protecting rules. It would be 10000X more difficult than batting on today's flat tracks.
You didn't have flat tracks ... a max of 2 bouncers an over rule... WI 4 pace quartet... mad hatters like Lillee, Thommo etc aiming for a cap on your head. on pitches that were seldom covered and had enough grass like the outfield...
when was the last time you have seen a grass covered track and the batsmen ruling the match. that's what Richards, Greenridge and Hyanes did on a regular basis.
And oh BTW the boundaries were the fence and not the ropes that are there these days.. those Sixes have to clear the fences that were about 90 - 110 yards away and he launches them about 15 - 20 rows over and above those fences...
Your foolish comments, that obviously reflects your thought processes n the knowledge (or the lack there off) of the game, are some of the most remarkable that I have ever heard. Viv is my most favorite as well, but, to say that today's gert batsmen like sachin, lara etc would get smashed is a complete nutcase!!! Even a batsman like ravi shastri got century in WI agnst a fiery marshal (the best of them all), ambrose n walsh. cont ...
@ARKN06 by your logic, all those who came before viv, were better than him because pitches in their time were even worse. and in viv's time in fact pitches WERE covered. in sobers' or hutton's time they were not.
and for heaven's sake, stop generalising the 70s - 80s as having been a hell of an era of bowling. apart from the WI bowlers, and lillee, thommo and snow and willis there were'nt terrifying fast bowlers like you would have us believe. the rest were as medium paced as any today.
How come a genius of such magnificence like Sir Viv failed to inspire his next generation in the Carribean islands to pick up cricket in real earnest??...It is such an extremely disturbing and disappointing scene today when we see the Windies' cricketers' quality...Gosh!!
So true. I mean, it's funny when India and Australia are both concerned about "shaking hands" after their rather acrimonious encounters of late. Gilchrist especially whined about some Indian players not shaking hands in his new book. I mean, seriously, who gives a fuck!
Sachin and Lara are the best be far in terms of records and statistics and would pay to see them bat. Viv however is the ultimate entertainer , I am not saying Sachin & Lara weren't entertainers, they were. Viv was just intimidating with that swagger. I just rate him above Sahin & Lara ,thats my preference.
Great innings....richards was way way ahead of his times.....had he played today....he would have been the best batsmen by a distance...it would have been interesting to see mcgrath vs richards....i think he is the best the game has ever seen...even better than bradman....
Dad would call me in off the street when Viv came in to bat .When he got out I would go off and play with my friends again. AWSOME ' Sir Vivian Issac Richards'
All i can say is Damn, look at all the greats celebrating!!! We are shitty now, but our glory days will come back. All dynasty will fall, we did and so will Australia.
the unfortunate thing is west indies have a bad cricket board like ours(Pakistan), weve always relied on natural talent, but the system fails the others
love the calypso music, do u know wats it called, th music at the end
People talk about Brian Lara or Sachin Tendulkar but the way Viv Richards played throughout his career. Well The Make bowlers fear of him, which you dont associate with LARA or Tendulkar. Lara may be more skilled in terms of placing ball but Richards make bowlers fear of him.
Viv richards had a certain swagger about him, perhaps a bit like a heavy weight boxer... The remarkable thing about Richards one day record is his strikerate... Many of the great players of his era have strikerate's (eg. Dean Jones) that look pedestrian compared to the modern era, but Viv Richards STR of 90 per 100 balls still holds up today...
The Windies Total before the Rain was 226 of 38, it became reduced to 108 from 18 overs, in all honesty they should have just abandoned the match. Nevertheless, the way that Viv was striking the ball on this particular night, I don't think 226 in 38overs would have been too much of a problem.
Rodney Hogg hit him flush on the jaw with a bounce once and he barely flinched. The next ball was short again and he put it 15 rows back into the grandstand at the MCG, he could change a whole test match in a few hours and a ODI in a matter of overs.
The only drawback if it could be called so about this innings was that the attack was not all that good - though Alderman and Hughes were better and quicker in '89 than 90% of today's medium-pace trundlers are. I heard he hooked Snow, Lillee, Imran, Hogg, Pascoe, Gilmour, Walker, Dymock, Prior, Willis, Botham, Dilley, Nawaz, Kapil, Hadlee and even Thommo (bowling eeasily at a 110 mph then) in the Packer Series and later on the frontfoot!
Thats why J.Thomson, along with C.Kortright, E.Gilbert, F.Tyson, R.Gilchrist, A.Roberts, M.Holding and M.Marshall remain the ONLY bowlers to have hit the sight-screen after first bounce on the pitch. LOL .. I see what you mean the wk was standing 20 yards behind the sightscreen .. Hey Chuckhtar, Lee etc have their balls going about ten bounces to the ss.
ALSO replace the gentle medium-pacers and spinners that Afridi bangs with these 100-110 mph monsters, and he would have his HS, Avg, SR etc in single digits, and ten thousand stitches on his '16-year-old' face - In the pre-90 uncovered tracks without helmet, against the pre-90 bowlers he would have 0s and 1s in his stats all over. His greatest .. ONLY achievement is that at 16 he made a 56-year-old Boycott feel 21. Ciao.
@ARKN06 afridi is of course no match for king viv.
but on the subject of uncovered pitches and fast bowlers. i think it's unfair to say that of batsmen from the subcontinent. most of them grow up playing on maidans that are as 18th century as any of the pitches that viv, or even boycott played on. without helmets, and some who can't afford it without pads or gloves even.
to that you add the menace of guys that clearly throw the ball. pitches that are 20 instead of the usual 22 yards.
I wouldn't compare Alderman and Hughes to the likes of Imran, Kapil, Lillee, Hadley, Thommo or Botham, but I would take these two over Hogg, Dilley, Pascoe, Walker... After this series Alderman took 40 Wickets against England in the Ashes series of 1989. I think this bowling attack was pretty useful, although not first rate like the windies had on the other side of the equation.
This was the Emperor of Batting at almost 37! What was he like then in the mid and late 70s and the early and mid 80s?! The Aus series 75-76 where he and Fredericks stood tall among the ruins of a 1-5 battering, the Packer Series, the '79 WC, his 153* against Aus, 189* vs Eng ........ His 153* against Lillee-Thomson-Hogg in '79 was, is and shall remain cricket's greatest innings ever by many a mile. T'kar, Co and fans can dream on.
Ah, those were the days when the West Indies were the West Indies. Now we have a bunch of impostors dressed in white flannels and maroon helmets masquerading as the West Indies team.
pls upload more of Viv, people of the late 80s and 90s didn't see him at his best, please post more of his great ODI knocks other than the one's we've all seen.. ie the ones that were on bbc sport or that are already on youtube.
I hope somebody puts up videos of his knocking up the 110 mph Thompson-Lillee pair in the Packer Series, as also then and later where he destroyed Hogg and murdered other Aussies like Walker, Gilmour and Pascoe ........ Also his 153* on a fast, bouncy unpredictable MCG pitch in '79 against the attack of Lillee, Thompson and Hogg, which shall remain by far the greatest ODI knock ever.
Why were the crowd booing towards the end of this game?

I suspect they were booing the home side for playing so badly. Australians are cocky bas*ards but they're not that unsporting.
Parrock1 1 year ago
@Parrock1 Nah I think you will find they were booing because of the rain rule back in those days which heavily favoured sides batting 2nd and effectively killed Australia's chances. Australia outplayed the Windies for most of that game, made about 220/4 from about 38 overs, then after taking 2 early wickets, the 2nd rain delay made it 118 from 18 overs, with 8 wickets in hand it was easy.

I think perfect detail is what spoils the experience.

He is the best by a solar system or 2
yippaoz 3 years ago
Why the heck were the crowd booing for every boundary/six that was hit by Richards? Did anything happen in this series?
vijayprabhu 3 years ago
Yes, this match caused a change to the rules for rain affected matches. The West Indies had belted Australia all summer and were a much better side, but in this match Australia were hard done by. They scored a massive total (230 odd off 38 overs - big even now, but huge back then) and then when the match was reduced further the Windies only had to score at the required run rate for a few overs. The crowd justifiably felt this was unfair. Not to take anything away from Viv's brilliance though.

This man is truly a great batsman. In terms of records Lara and Sachin holds them all, but in terms of all round package and enertainment Vivian is number one.
saintandrews84 3 years ago

There are others, but these two are the best of the lot.

flyingparadise 3 years ago
You have to remember though that Gilly, T'kar, Sehwag etc had it easier than Viv with better pitches protective gear (esp the helmet) batsman-friendly rules and inferior attacks. I cant imagine any of these blokes face the likes of Thommo (easily over 100 mph at his peak in the 70s) and other far more dangerous guys than today's without helmet and friendly rules in place on those fast bouncy pitches. Today's champs would'nt face even today's trundlers on today's flat tracks without helmet.
ARKN06 2 years ago
You think only batsmen have developed, not bowlers? I feel every era has a great hero. Besides you just cannot compare Gilly and Sehwag with Sachin. He is the greatest there is, there was.
perlbab 2 years ago
YOUR OPINION. Mine is that as batsmen Bradman, Richards, Sobers etc were miles and miles ahead of T'kar. And countless others think like that. You have made a super-vague statement like 'batsmen have developed' and 'bowlers have also developed'. Bowlers have been killed through the 90s and this decade with batting tracks dozens of restrictions etc. Batsmen have so much protective gear and fast bowing has declined severely since end-80s. Most of today's heroes would be zeros in the 70s and 80s.
ARKN06 2 years ago
... cont
and, your enthusiasm for leaving those scholl-boyish comments are only matched by your level of bias and extremely poor knowledge of cricket. Why wud someone listen to your opinion as to who are the best players when we have experts like richie (benod), tony (greig) n many others (who played the game at the highest level) telling us HOW IT IS along w/ their reasonings and explanations. Surely, they know what they r talking abt unlike 'wanna-be' ppl like u!
jonhz 2 years ago
ARKN06 2 years ago
You didn't have flat tracks ... a max of 2 bouncers an over rule... WI 4 pace quartet... mad hatters like Lillee, Thommo etc aiming for a cap on your head. on pitches that were seldom covered and had enough grass like the outfield...
when was the last time you have seen a grass covered track and the batsmen ruling the match. that's what Richards, Greenridge and Hyanes did on a regular basis.
blossam720 2 years ago
And oh BTW the boundaries were the fence and not the ropes that are there these days.. those Sixes have to clear the fences that were about 90 - 110 yards away and he launches them about 15 - 20 rows over and above those fences...

Your foolish comments, that obviously reflects your thought processes n the knowledge (or the lack there off) of the game, are some of the most remarkable that I have ever heard. Viv is my most favorite as well, but, to say that today's gert batsmen like sachin, lara etc would get smashed is a complete nutcase!!! Even a batsman like ravi shastri got century in WI agnst a fiery marshal (the best of them all), ambrose n walsh. cont ...

what is also dumb is players wearing helmats on the last over, but facing a spinner...makes no sense
islandwarrior16 2 years ago
@ARKN06 by your logic, all those who came before viv, were better than him because pitches in their time were even worse. and in viv's time in fact pitches WERE covered. in sobers' or hutton's time they were not.
and for heaven's sake, stop generalising the 70s - 80s as having been a hell of an era of bowling. apart from the WI bowlers, and lillee, thommo and snow and willis there were'nt terrifying fast bowlers like you would have us believe. the rest were as medium paced as any today.

People talk about Brian Lara or Sachin Tendulkar but the way Viv Richards played throughout his career. Well The Make bowlers fear of him, which you dont associate with LARA or Tendulkar. Lara may be more skilled in terms of placing ball but Richards make bowlers fear of him.
pavanlara 4 years ago
Viv richards had a certain swagger about him, perhaps a bit like a heavy weight boxer... The remarkable thing about Richards one day record is his strikerate... Many of the great players of his era have strikerate's (eg. Dean Jones) that look pedestrian compared to the modern era, but Viv Richards STR of 90 per 100 balls still holds up today...
19833891 4 years ago
The Windies Total before the Rain was 226 of 38, it became reduced to 108 from 18 overs, in all honesty they should have just abandoned the match. Nevertheless, the way that Viv was striking the ball on this particular night, I don't think 226 in 38overs would have been too much of a problem.
19833891 4 years ago
THE GREATEST BATSMAN EVER. NO FEAR.
jagmeet7 4 years ago
Rodney Hogg hit him flush on the jaw with a bounce once and he barely flinched. The next ball was short again and he put it 15 rows back into the grandstand at the MCG, he could change a whole test match in a few hours and a ODI in a matter of overs.
tigerrish 4 years ago

ARKN06 4 years ago
ALSO replace the gentle medium-pacers and spinners that Afridi bangs with these 100-110 mph monsters, and he would have his HS, Avg, SR etc in single digits, and ten thousand stitches on his '16-year-old' face - In the pre-90 uncovered tracks without helmet, against the pre-90 bowlers he would have 0s and 1s in his stats all over. His greatest .. ONLY achievement is that at 16 he made a 56-year-old Boycott feel 21. Ciao.
ARKN06 4 years ago
@ARKN06 afridi is of course no match for king viv.
but on the subject of uncovered pitches and fast bowlers. i think it's unfair to say that of batsmen from the subcontinent. most of them grow up playing on maidans that are as 18th century as any of the pitches that viv, or even boycott played on. without helmets, and some who can't afford it without pads or gloves even.
to that you add the menace of guys that clearly throw the ball. pitches that are 20 instead of the usual 22 yards.
adityanaikdesai 6 months ago
I wouldn't compare Alderman and Hughes to the likes of Imran, Kapil, Lillee, Hadley, Thommo or Botham, but I would take these two over Hogg, Dilley, Pascoe, Walker... After this series Alderman took 40 Wickets against England in the Ashes series of 1989. I think this bowling attack was pretty useful, although not first rate like the windies had on the other side of the equation.
19833891 4 years ago
This was the Emperor of Batting at almost 37! What was he like then in the mid and late 70s and the early and mid 80s?! The Aus series 75-76 where he and Fredericks stood tall among the ruins of a 1-5 battering, the Packer Series, the '79 WC, his 153* against Aus, 189* vs Eng ........ His 153* against Lillee-Thomson-Hogg in '79 was, is and shall remain cricket's greatest innings ever by many a mile. T'kar, Co and fans can dream on.
