@Materhorn86 No,I was not getting too much extra noise with my TS9,but the TS9 was not cutting the mustard as far as being able to drive my fuzz pedals in general(the dreaded "mid hump").Soooo,I went with the Barber LTD,which is MUCH more transparent and adjustable(there is 2 internal trimpots for bass and treble)and with the Barber LTD my clean channel gain sounds much more natural, almost like its a part of the amp itself.(I only use the clean channel on my tube amp)Good luck on your"Tonequest"
I got this pedal two weeks ago,it is not as analog Mike says himself,a super thick compressed fuzz. This pedal is a very musical sounding fuzzy /distortion that sounds really good with humbuckers as well as S.C.I run mine with a tube screamer in front of it and it sounds amazing. If you turn the fuzz up all the way you can get a slight octave up effect, that sounds great with the neck pickup. And it sounds clear as a bell when played in a band setting.
@gibbytone75 When you stack the astrotone with your tube screamer does it make a lot of hiss, or is it just totally unavoidable regardless of what pedals you stack?
Fuzzes are also a tough one. When they work right they are brilliant but it can be so difficult to get the right one in the sweet spot with your (one's) gear...
Don't dis the gearmandude? He's a bonafide douche who sucks at guitar. He's actually a delight to dis, why else would you watch these videos. The demos and playing are terrible. He doesn't even know how to use the pedals he demos and always the same lame licks. No seriously this guy i a laughing stock.
@taylorjeremy71 You suck. If you don't like it change the channel. Most of us want to hear the gear and see what others think about tone , features. Then I have to read this crap by some want to be music critic. PS You might consider a spelling lesson?...Or suicide
I think Les Paul types sound great with a fuzz. So does Billy Gibbons. But, I do think it would be good to either use two guitars (one Strat & one Les Pauly type), or do a separate video for each.
By the way, I agree about Fuzz Face types not cutting through so-well with a band, For players looking for a Fuzz Face clone that cuts through a lot better, try a Throbak Fuzz Haze. Check out the Pro Guitar Shop video for it as well as the one GMD did. (Gearmandid?). VERY-versatile. Great OD tones too
@thesjkexperience doooooooooooooooooooood ... don't dis the gearmanndude ... ever ... blasphemy ... we shall burn you at the stake as we play collectively with les pauls and fuzzies
@Derveregun I wanted a Sun Face. But Based on GMD's videos I'm finding the Astro Tone to be more musical. It is also more useful as an overdrive pedal. It has a lot more range. I think I'm now gassing for an Astro Tone!
I love GMDs videos, but have never commented. I appreciate hearing demos of all of the different pedals out there, but I want to say something different. GMC has some chops!!! He's got some serious licks going on in his vids!
@jackofalltrades156 Hi, I just posted my new pedal it is a copy of a Sam Ash Fuzzz Boxx. I only used a 9v battery. Thanks hope you like it. Orbitbuilder
Hey gearmandude, your reviews are awesome, I think a lot of us tone seekers out here really love these reviews, keep up the great work!! I was talking to another working guitarist I run in to every once in a while and he knew of you from the trademark footwear, lol.
This is one of my fave GMD vids. Thanks man! However, it suuuure would be cool to test out this claim about the Sun Face -> Astro Tone getting a 'Spirit in the Sky' sound. Gearmandude! Make it happen! You're the shiz.
I thought about that too. But, I believe analogman is out of NY, priority mail in February means there's a good chance of the beer being somewhat cool. Plus, Analogman sent him a beer. That's pretty cool. I really do have a life, you'll just have to take my word for it.
With 5 to 15 watt tube amps selling like crazy. I think this would be great to give ya a nice classic overdrive sound without running your amp maxed out. Wonder what it would sound like through a Solid State ? Sometimes the warmer overdrive units don't sound quite as nice without a good tube amp. Ever try running a Boss SD1 through a Solid State Fender ? Tone Disaster ! But Ya run it through a Bassman,,,Tonal Bliss. Great review as always !
That sounds like it would purr with a Fender. A fuzz face can contain so much compression, that the transistors sometimes buzz out before actually driving the STRONG pre-amp stage of vintage Fender amps (blackface). This one definitely looks like it would be worth a try!

I'm jealous! Just got my astrotone about an hour ago, still in the box, I'm trying to think of an excuse to leave work early so I can go home and rock this thing. I play a Campbell American UK-1 through a Deluxe Reverb so this review with a Les Paul was just what I was looking for. Thanks gearman!
Dude, you should check out the new Ibanez "Darkstone" guitar for bluesy goodness/Godness. Like a Fender and a Les Paul rolled into one. No twiddle stick here. Plays and sounds like a dream and the price REALLY rocks! My mum bought herself one the other day and i been preferring it to my USA Jackson Soloist. I wish i'd bought 5 of them instead of my 1 Jackson. : (
i like it it sounds like a clear more manageable fuzz face
