Kinda funny how when Jeff left the Yardbirds, he got Rod Stewart, and when Jimmy reformed the Yardbirds, he got Robert Plant. Think about if those 2 were switched around, Rod in Zeppelin, and Plant in the Jeff Beck Group. Lmfao
there is no other singer like rod stewart.. when im down and put on his songs and hear his voice he makes me feel better for some reason .. from the time i was 13 to now and im 35 and will always love his music ....
MY POSTING IS MUCH MORE COMPLETE, ORIGINALLY FILMED BY SWEDISH TV....MINE ALSO HAS MICKY MOST THE PRODUCER GIVING JEFF BECK SHIT FOR NOT SHOWING UP FOR A SESSION, AND THEY ARE WAY BEHIND....PLUS ROD GIVING INPUT ....so there
Saw them in 67 or 68 at the Kinetic Theater in Chicago. I believe a band unknown at the time opened up for them.... Peter Greene, Danny Kirwan, and Jeremy Spencer, fronting a blues band with Mick Fleetwood on drums - Fleetwood Mac. But that show the Jeff Beck Group put on was the only thing I witnessed that came close to seeing Hendrix (saw him 3 times). It was jaw dropping.
Yes, I saw this ensemble at the Windsor festival in 1967. I would like to think that I knew at the time I was witnessing music history, but I didn't. I sure as hell know now how lucky I was!
this is fantastic.. this track is one of the greatest rock moments in my life - I used to go to a record/hi fi club and I clearly remember putting this on - everyone sat in seats like at a cinema and we "checked out the stereo" - the opening riff "mrs mills" everyone's faces dropping ..what's he doing ... then the riff kicked in .. I can't tell you of the joy when that moment kicked in ..the final recorded version of this track must be played LOUD.. bless who ever put this up...
Nice one for putting this vid up man ! Its rare and sweet and great to watch and people who knock it dont know shit and it does not matter whats missing or how long it is ,Its a studio mix :)
Beck-Ola and Plynth water down the drain one of my favorites LPs and songs, all time. Saw this band back in 69 right after Nikki Hopkins was kicked out The rocked the Commodore Ballroom in Lowell, MA. Rod dod one of his screams and shot the house PA so Beck did about a 30minute solo around Rice Pudding.
1969, The greatest year in rock history & Beck-Ola one of the best from that year. An extremely heavy lp not as refined & polished as the previous years Truth but in my opinion better. The band just wailed & Stewart was at his vocal peak. Check out the instrumental Rice Pudding from this album...Incredible! One of my top 10 favorite albums of all time along with Let it Bleed, Beggars Banquet, Are You Experienced, Abbey Road, Zep 2, Second Winter, Cream Goodbye etc...
This is amazing!!!! I can see why it didnt work out for them though, Jeffs guitar playing is way too prominant, theres no space for Rods voice or monumental ego. Jeff was always meant to be makin instrumental music i reckon...
Fillmore East then had 3 bands every night. 1st set by the 7th Sons. Then a visionary masterpiece: The Grateful Dead playing extended music from Anthem of The Sun. Finally the dramatic moment. Would Beck still have IT, in a scene dominated by Hendrix and Clapton? Stewart was so nervous (!) that he sang off stage 'till Beck dragged him out! It was a freaking atomic music bomb that blew us all to a new level, a statement of raw and sublime expression. Part of me is still in that 4th row seat ;-).
I was fortunate to have had 4th row center seat for the US debut of the Jeff Beck Group @ the Fillmore East in June '68 I had been a total Beck & Yardbirds fan but Beck was in a car accident right after leaving the group and was out of the scene for almost a year. The only thing I 'd heard was the Beck's Bolero/Silver Lining single and Bolero really got me wound up for this show. Everyone was buzzing with anticipation to see what Beck do. (continued)...
Wow, what a find! Getting to see even just a couple of minutes of when this timeless music was being made in the studio is priceless! And Plynth was such a monster track that doesn't get much attention anymore, so it's great to see it in action. I does seem like that take was used on the record. Of course it was common to assemble a final vocal track by as a composite of several takes. We can only hope that if there's any more footage from these sessions that it will get released! Thanks!!!!!!
How great to see this listing: When this album came out I was in Japan in the military as a dj on the Far East Network in Tokyo. Rod Stewart had such great phrasing and with Beck they just kicked ass. We weren't supposed to play any music not supplied by Armed Forces Radio, but my buddy George Day and I played the hell out of this album right from the start with this cut and also "Ain't Superstitious" -- a killer track getting most of the plays.
I don't know how anybody can give this any less than five stars, no matter what you do or don't hear in the mix. This video is history in the making, simply amazing. Sure, I'd like to see Jeff shredding, but seeing this much is very cool.
This is a question and a rating... Where is the lead guitar track?? Is this an alternate version of the song? Are you missing a channel of stereo or...?
Anybody who likes this song, please search out the album version... it's much better. Jeff absolutely rocks the leads, but you don't hear it on this version.
I will rate this a 1 out of 5. I love the song, but I love to hear the guitar too. The original version of the song, I give 6 out of 5.
What you see here is a recording session. Rod is laying down the final vocal track heard on the album. This is not the finished product. If you listen to Beck-Ola, you'll hear layers of guitars, sometimes three leads playing at the same time. Clapton, Page, and Hendrix were also doing the same thing at the time. It probably took hours to finish this tune.
Yeah it appears that is what is going on though I question if the vocal was actually being performed as the video was shot or is this a rough mix with staged vocal. This is certainly the very same vocal take as on the album . There is in addition to the main chordal guitar, at least one lead guitar track pulled back in this mix which COULD BE one of many mixed loud enough to hear or the others are yet to be laid to tape.
Right ,do ya think im sexy [ mick jaeger said he was the sexiest singer ] ted nugent showed up at a drum clinic in a music store that carmine appice was doing and he said you have been playing with that wimp rod stewart now make those drums sound like thunder like the vanilla fudge[ ritchie blackmores favorite group ] .
Impossible to believe actually. Trying to explain how great Beck is to someone unfamiliar with him becomes very difficult once you admit he was in a band with Rod Stewart. If fame was contingent on talent, Beck would be as famous as Brittany Spears, while she and Rod Stewart would be unknown.
It all started with the goofy ass outfits during the Faces yrs, then it had to be "rod and the faces" then simply "rod stewart".Soon after came "do ya think im sexy" and eighties cheese pop,and that was all she wrote for Rod's street cred.
Bullshit. "Talent" is not simply a matter of technical prowess - Yes, Beck is fucking amazing and criminally underrated but To dog Stewart like that is truly ignorant. He's got a great voice, he's got taste and he can entertain.
We had 10th row seats to see the perform this entire album and truth at the Fillmore East Amazing. Procol Harum opened and John Mayall introduced Laurel Canyon Blues with Mick Taylor.
I think it was the last tour of the Jeff Beck group with Hot Rod. Jeff and Rod stood at the edge of stage at opposite ends battling for the audience's attention. The had everyone on the edge of their seats.
Beck with Rod the mod on vox was by far the best stuff Beck ever did, and ther coolest stuff Rod ever saing. Too bad Beck was such a moody introvert. Cuz who knows how many cool albums the Jeff Beck group w Rod could put out.
Wow, a film of a recording session in progress. You don't hear Jeff's lead guitar because it hasn't been recorded yet. Guess what, I listen to Beck-Ola every day on my way to work!
One addictive album - When I listen to a Led Zep album I get about 2 tracks in, then swap it for Beck-Ola - everytime - just more exciting and interesting, also makes me feel like I'm in a western saloon with that honky tonk piano of Nicky Hopkins
Yes, Nicky Hopkins sure contributed, great stuff. Hey, look! Somebody gave me a thumbs down. Ha! Ha! Ha! I guess I should be listening to Barney's Greatest Hits instead? " I Love You, You Love Me, We're a Happy Family..."
Most wanted Beck to be a conventional pop singer and Beck wanted Stewart to sing on the singles(like " Hi-Ho Silver Lining"). You can read about these things in the "Truth" and "Beck-Ola" reissues.
Yeah. Truth has been one of my favorite albums of all time. I remember when it came out, I loved it way beyond Led Zepplin's first. Nobody in rock had a piano player like Nicky Hopkins. Jeff Beck was great for Rod Stewart . Brought out the best in him.
and with Ron as well. This is friggin gold dust - the only footage I've seen of any of the first Jeff Beck Group performing where the sound matches the images
I recently picked up the newly remastered BECK-OLA cd with the added tracks (Very Good!) The liner notes state that Jeff admitted that his intentions with this band was to blow everyone else off the stage. I think he succeeded.
Interesting 1969 recording session. Main body of tune was probably already recorded as an instrumental and Rod is later adding his vocals, perhaps. @owen0515 This is taken from a Swedish music show called Pick Up Plock. They only showed music from the end of the 50's to the 70's.
If I remember right, this show aired for one season back in 98 or 99.
Where SVT got their hands on this is a good question.
