Actually, if you listen to her upper range there is alot of 'hiss' on her vocals. Minnie actually can sing whole phrases in the whistle register. Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a virtuoso flautist lost his mind when he first heard Minnie. He was blown away by the fact her whistles were pitch-perfect. All good that people prefer Mariah, I just wish people didn't fabricate truths because they prefer one artist over the other :)

She had great whistle register control, probably the best. She didn't scream her whistle notes like Mariah and could sing the whistle scales fluidly. She could start soft then go high, high then soft, she was AMAZING! She is one of my favorite singers ever, and her version of Otis Reddings "respect" with rotary connection is my favorite.
Her control over her instrument is incredible. I loved seeing her paid homage in the Tribe Called Quest documentary they aired some footage I had never seen of her performing 'Inside My Love', different from the ones posted here on YouTube. Whether with the Gems, Andrea Davis, Rotary Connection, Terry Callier, Wonderlove or solo - Minnie was the TRUTH! ;) <3

Like I said, Mariah's earlier work was her best vocally, pointedly her first album. I still like some songs, but my foundations may run deeper than yours :)

That is why she blew away people like Phyllis Hyman, Charles Stepney, the Crusaders, all accomplished musicians. And she could sustain her notes. Her higher notes cannot be sustained where people she idolzied like Minnie Riperton can actually sing words in the whistle register let alone sustain the notes for extended periods.
Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, Marvin Gaye...they all kill Mariah. She does too many damn runs. She lacks emotive power. Again, she was at her best on her first album.

Actually, if you listen to her upper range there is alot of 'hiss' on her vocals. Minnie actually can sing whole phrases in the whistle register. Rahsaan Roland Kirk, a virtuoso flautist lost his mind when he first heard Minnie. He was blown away by the fact her whistles were pitch-perfect. All good that people prefer Mariah, I just wish people didn't fabricate truths because they prefer one artist over the other :)

@MsMerising Minnie was/is a great legend! She was unbelievable and unlike Mariah, her whistle notes were very pleasant to my ears. She sounded like an angel. She had great whistle register control, probably the best. She didn't scream her whistle notes like Mariah and could sing the whistle scales fluidly. She could start soft then go high, high then soft, she was AMAZING! She is one of my favorite singers ever, and her version of Otis Reddings "respect" with rotary connection is my favorite.
