The Queen has been trained from a young age to always have the best interests of her subjects at heart in the long term, she does not feel the need to impress the population with promises that most of the time cannot be honoured. Unlike politicians who use every trick in the book to reach the top and when they finally get into office they will use every trick in the book to try and stay in power.

The first job I had after high school here in Canada was working for the provincial; government of Manitoba. It is required that you swear allegiance to Her Majesty; her heirs & successors. The Civil List exists because a much larger sum gets paid over from the Duchies to the Government. Swapping it over might stem the increasingly hollow complaints over the 61p per capita or so the monarchy costs a year, but it would also make the Royal Family fiscally independent and possibly less accountable on their expenditure.
Incidentally presidential systems aren't free and only have an head of state plus spouse, not an entire family together undertaking thousands of engagements per year.

Maybe you think like that because they are one permanent State Family, It is a known fact that any Presidential budget in Europe or America costs more then any Royal Family of Constitutional Monarchies. Brazil´s Presidency costs six times more. And as I remember the first presidencial act after throwing away the Brazilian Monarchy was to double the salary of the head of State. The basic difference is that the Brits publish their expendures, Republics hide it under National Security affairs.

The people and the armed forces' loyalty to the crown has prevented us from ever having a dictator. Franco, Napoleon, Hitler, Mussolini etc. The history of the world has never listed a British dictator and hopefully never will. the queen's generosity? Hey they had to MAKE her pay taxes. If she was really dedicated to the service of her country, she'd be out there working in homeless shelters and heading organizations designed to relieve the poverty of her country and make sure everyone has a chance. She'd ask her polo playing family to help too. Not just token visits but real work to make Britain a better place for EVERYONE, not just those born with titles.
The President of the United States is a paid public official. he's paid $400,000.00 a year. He lives in a home which is provided for him during his term. He pays for all his own clothes and food. He has access to Camp David. When he retires he will receive a pension of $162,000.00. His protection is paid for by the Federal govt.

In the 17th century they had no real concept of democracy, the whole world was governed by very wealthy people and absolute monarchs, even Republics tended towards having Oligarchy. I do not believe in monarchies, either, but I don't believe you should hate the person who holds the title of King, Queen--whatever. They were born into that system. The Queen is not so bad--I'm sure she has many good qualities just like any of us. I don't see that she has done anything to deserve to be hated, nor to be called upon to be killed. The Queen has been trained from a young age to always have the best interests of her subjects at heart in the long term, she does not feel the need to impress the population with promises that most of the time cannot be honoured. Unlike politicians who use every trick in the book to reach the top and when they finally get into office they will use every trick in the book to try and stay in power.

The Civil List exists because a much larger sum gets paid over from the Duchies to the Government. Swapping it over might stem the increasingly hollow complaints over the 61p per capita or so the monarchy costs a year, but it would also make the Royal Family fiscally independent and possibly less accountable on their expenditure.
Incidentally presidential systems aren't free and only have an head of state plus spouse, not an entire family together undertaking thousands of engagements per year.

I understand what you are saying, but I don't think the Civil lost payments will make a massive difference to education or social care etc. Billions are already spent on those areas and it never seems to get much better - it is strange that a developed nation cannot do these things.

She is head of state of 16 Realms, not just Britain.
The Civil List is the money awarded by Government to pay for the staff and upkeep of assets owned and employed by the State - for example, Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty uses her own money to finance her private homes and to fund her personal activities.
The British Government funds Her Majesty's British state-related activities, just as the Canadian government pays for the Queen's state activities when she is in her role as Queen of Canada

Maybe you think like that because they are one permanent State Family, It is a known fact that any Presidential budget in Europe or America costs more then any Royal Family of Constitutional Monarchies. Brazil´s Presidency costs six times more. And as I remember the first presidencial act after throwing away the Brazilian Monarchy was to double the salary of the head of State. The basic difference is that the Brits publish their expendures, Republics hide it under National Security affairs.

The people and the armed forces' loyalty to the crown has prevented us from ever having a dictator. Franco, Napoleon, Hitler, Mussolini etc. The history of the world has never listed a British dictator and hopefully never will. Becoming a republic isn't going to solve all (or any) of the UK's problems overnight. The Monarch is also the only person a British prime minister can talk to without ever having to worry it'll end up in the papers. President Blair? No thanks.

the queen's generosity? Hey they had to MAKE her pay taxes. If she was really dedicated to the service of her country, she'd be out there working in homeless shelters and heading organizations designed to relieve the poverty of her country and make sure everyone has a chance. She'd ask her polo playing family to help too. Not just token visits but real work to make Britain a better place for EVERYONE, not just those born with titles.

The Queen isn't the only person in the world who lives in luxury you know, compared to starving african children, we all live in luxury. What do you think the Queen spends the civil list on? She can't use it to buy new clothes - it is used for state duties, e.g. royal visits, state dinners, official receptions etc. She has her own money like anyone else does, but she does not take tax payer money and buy herself new tiaras and Rolls Royces. She gets a lot less than what her estates give back!

Which in 2008 was around $80 million pounds as compared to over $350 million to support the USa President in his role as Head of State. Why do our entertainers & musicians go to the US? Because you give them enormous amounts of money! Most choose not to become resident in the US for tax purposes and prefer to pay for the best free medical care, best free education & best free social services in the world. If you think67pence (a dollar) per person would change anyone's life you should visit the UK & enjoy what's here.
