Could be an artifact of having to lay down a drum beat with singing at the same time, but in listening to this back to back with SP's 1983 Budokan Japan set, you can see why Perry is just the better singer. Something lacking in Deen's nuances, shading, timing, and styling, and seems to be just one register lower, as well. It still is a great job that he is doing, but to me, journeyman, versus Steve Perry being the master singer...
No one can ever replace or come near to Steve Perry, but I will admit that Deen is very, very talented. And frankly, though I give Arnel his due, Deen does a better job on these songs-and since Arnel doesn't have to do a complete set by being spelled with Deen, they aren't grinding him into the dust and making him 'toast' as they did with Steve.
I have posted some videos of myself singing to journey. I would appreciate it if you could stop by my channel. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. thank you.
dear jesus. can you say talent!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!? oh my god....i'm burning my drums.......i'll never be able to pull anything like that off. Deen your my idol, great job:)
@ArnelRocksChile If you really knew the process that Journey has gone through with their lead singers since Perry left you would know that answer. It is very simple-Deen turned the offer down. I cant make it anymore plain to you than that. Deen is doing what he enjoys most and what he is most comfortable with, but that does not take one iota away from the fact that he does an oustanding job of singing SP era Journey songs.
its sad they have two people in the band trying too sing the perry songs,an we now it only takes one too sing them his name is steve perry.wonder why they havent had a hit in 15 yrs
@tr4207 You make a valid point. Until Arnel plays a major role in writing songs that take Journey to anywhere near the level of fame, notoriiety and respect that Perry did, he is simply just another singer who is trying to fill SP's very large shoes.
the background noise is incredibly rude; I can't believe the audience would be so disrespectful; this is a sterling performance. The 30 years I lived at concerts, you could hear a pin drop, and that was all over NY, NY.
Exactly....what band scoops up a poor Philippino boy off of youtube except for some publicity. Arnel can sing...but if you see his stuff before the tribute band...he sang totally different. He morphed into Steve Perry mode...but f*uck...so would I ...I guess. But Deen would be the better in-house choice by far and let Arnel still be a roadie.
@ArnelRocksChile Arnel is not even as good as Augeri. If Augeri wuld not have lost his voice, Arnel would still be in the phillipines singing in tribute bands.
@neechee5150 Well, guess what neechee5150, that's a BIG "if". Come on now! You don't actualy think Steve Augeri [his voice] could stand the rigors of singing, belting in about 60++ concerts a year do you? He tried to test his limits and failed.
@ArnelRocksChile Why do you ignore the facts and the truth to defend Arnel. If Augeri's voice would have held up, Arnel would still be singing in tribute bands in the phillipines. If Deen had the lead singer personality, was not shy by nature, and so passionate about playing drums, Arnel would still be singing in a tribute band. This is a simple matter of elimination and logic.
@ArnelRocksChile Do you want to debate the fact that Deen was offered the lead singing job before anyone had even heard of Arnel? Do you want to debate the fact that had Augeri's voice been repairable through surgery, he would still be the Journey frontman? Do you want to debate the fact that Arnel can not work a crowd and be the true leader of the band like Perry was? Go a head, make your case that Arnel steps up front and leads the band and not the other way around.
@ArnelRocksChile The best choice to continue the legacy of Journey is Steve Perry, and egos and money seem to prevent this from happening. Schon and Cain are making alot more money by hiring Arnel than they would if they had to include Perry at the share of the profits and partnership/corporation that Perry would demand. In Perry's absence, Deen raises the bar for Arnel every time Deen takes over lead vocals.
@neechee5150 Stop it already! Geez! I don't really care what you think about Arnel nor how you think he's not godd enough a frontman for Journey. Obviously you're one of those bitter fans of Steve Perry or Steve Augeri Or even Deen. So what if Arnel isn't as good as these guys i've mentioned? Well, Neil and Jon doesnt think so lest they would've done exactly what you been yappin about.
@neechee5150 The only reason why I can think of your dislike towards Arnel is because of the fact that he's ASIAN [like me]. I'm not surprised if you didn't like Charice much too. Geez!!!
@ArnelRocksChile First off, I do not even know who Charice is, and you have been caught in a lie. Second, even contimplating playing the race card here is a pure falacy, a smear and a lie that is used to obviscate the real issue. I could not care less about Arnel's geneology/race. However, the simple fact remains that every time Deen takes over lead vocals, he raises the bar for Arnel.
@neechee5150 You've been very adamant from the very start that Deen is the best choice for journey's new frontman. You even unabashedly professed that everytime Deen perform, he raises the bar for Arnel. If so, then why in tarnation didn't Neal and Jonathan made him [Deen] their new frontman? Why do they painstakingly scour the internet to find a replacement?
@neechee5150 If Deen is so good in singing the dirty dozen apart from being the best drummer there is then why the hell he isn't fronting Journey now? Could it be that he wasn't the one they [Neal & Jon and Deen himself] were looking for? The one who can continue where Steve Perry left off? The one could epitomize the so called legacy sound?
@neechee5150 Aside from Still they ride and mother father, what else could Deen pull off? He's the best drummer and all. I like him alot and he himself sing praises
for Arnel so, who are you to discredit Arnel like that when everyone from Journey seems to agree that they made the right decision to make Arnel as their singer?
@ArnelRocksChile Stick to argument at hand. Since Augeri started having problems with his voice, Deen has sang many more tunes that just Mother Father and still they ride. Search Youtube and you will find this to be fact. Deen does an outstanding job on every SP era song that he has sang.
@ArnelRocksChile Cont Here is something that sould be so obvious that it need not be said--Neal, Jon & Deen are not going to say, hey Arnel's pretty good, but Deen is better or we can make lots of money now without Steve Perry even though Arnel is not even in the same league as SP. They are out to sell a product and PR is the name of the game. They call it the music business for a reason.
@neechee5150 OK. That does it! I won't continue arguing over some mundane matter specially if it's with a WOMAN. Geez! I should've seen it. It's quite obvious and yet i chose to ignore it. Bloody serves me right. have a good day ma'am.
@ArnelRocksChile You have yet to even bring a cogent, sound, and valid argument to support your case. You have used so many ad homenim tactics and falacies and now you add being sexist to that list of methods to obscure the facts and the argument at hand.
@ArnelRocksChile Cont You simply refuse to accept the fact that had Deen chose otherwise, Arnel would be doing cover bands in the Phillipines. Dispute the fact that bringing Perry back(egos aside) would mean less money for Cain and Schon becuase Perry is going to command a bigger share/ more stock in the corporation. Schon and Cain also have more control of how much touring the band does with Perry not at the helm.
@neechee5150 So, what's it gonna be ma'am - REFUSE TO ACCEPT THE FACT or ACCEPT THE FACT?
You're reading too much of Robert Ludlum's books... too many conspiracy theories. lol.
Lemme guess... you're not even married are you? Guess not coz a woman with an attitude like you, guys would be dead scared to even stand next to you. You simply let off an air of a nagger type. Thanks for your two cents. Goodbye!
@ArnelRocksChile Once again you reveal yourself to be a sexist and not a prime candidate for MENSA as well. Prove that Deen was not offered the lead singer job in Journey and that he turned it down. Once again your use of ad homenim tactics and basless and false speculation reveals that you attack the person instead of the logic, the facts and the argument.
@neechee5150 ...and oh by the way, i only just realized you're already 39 years old. Sorry. My apologies. Surely a 20 years old like me shouldn't be arguing with a senior citizen. My bad.
@aorphia well that's cool. i believe a lot of fans would agree with you but, the problem is - DEEN DOESN"T WANT TO BE LEAD SINGER!!! LIVE WITH IT!!! Geez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deen will tell you himself that he can only sing 3 or 4 songs a night before he is vocally spent....probably a slight exaggeration on his part but if you've never sung lead vocals 4 or 5 nights in a row, much less JOURNEY lead vocals, a tour is not a good testing ground to see if you're able!:)
but he knows the truth to arnels nothing more than a hired puppet by neal ...hell that's all neal wanted and that's just what he got!and the way neal is arnel better watch his back neal showed love to everyone else before he fired them...
i've always liked journey but i've never been a huge fan even back in the day and i've seen them in concert in the mid's 80's, but when i hear deen sing he just grips my heart. i just love his singing & drum playing and i can't praise him enough, he is sooo good and so humble about it.

Really the future you say??wow and who is going to be in the band when schon, cain and valory leave??There is no demand for arnel to the countless of real journey fans..
Its a given that the band has maybe 10 years probably less of Hi Energy performing left. The 2008 tour was a get aquainted tour along with the new album. Just fir the sake of argument that the have 10 years left...that is plenty of time to grow together and continue to shine...with Arnel!
I don't blame Steve...who wants to be told they have to major surgery or else...Steve took the "or else" and now everyone pays. When you give an ultimatum, your butt better be able the cash the check your mouth just wrote.
He was open about kicking drugs/alcohol, lost 40 pounds and shaped up physically/mentally. He has a new son born May of this year. For concerts that sometimes last a straight 3 hours, he is amazing. The drums alone with his feet going 3 hours nightly, using his upper body for the same length of time AND singing lead? He was becoming run down. Neal and Ross were pushing him, he wouldn't last another tour season. Thank goodness Arnel came along with his angel face.
angel face???i though halloween ended awhile backk..please don't promote journey you're doing no justice for the rest of millions of real journey fans don't want to hear..go to the arnel side please and kindly stop wasting peoples time for your arnel propaganda posts..
