From 9 yrs and up I studied classical singing but by the time I was in high school, I developed a passion for rock 'n roll and fell in love with Kansas. I absolutely LOVED the exact precision necessary for the mix of classical and rock; no one had ever done this before and I was inspired to changed directions at graduation but fter hearing me do a harmony to a Triumph song, my professor told me it was not possible to mix the 2 types of music; I should have brought in Kansas!
@1stpeppermintpatty Nobody? I was born in KCMO. saw these guys 7-8 times in the Summer Jams at KC Royals & Arrowhead Stadiums, Mun. Auditorium, Mem. Hall... from '76 through '81.. but I also saw YES, Genesis, RUSH, Shooting Star, REO Speedwagon, Steely Dan, Queen... other Master Musicians & their Bands having just as precise and intricate style & Mix as Kansas... I saw 'em all, 'with' Dave, Kerry & Robby before Steve left in early '81. Saw 'em at Starlight, Sandstone & Penn Valley in the '90's.
@1stpeppermintpatty Should have brought in Kansas, YES, Old Sammy Hagar, The Edgar Winter Group (Ronnie Montrose), The Band, Grand Funk Railroad, ANGEL, Alan Parsons Project, RUSH, Nazareth, Free/Bad Co. 'Anything' Clapton... and so on... as Kansas says many of these performers/Musicians were-are their inspiration...
Keep up on what you love to do.. Maybe I'll see YOU in concert?
Its from a photographers website called Philmages. You can see his watermark on Phil's bass drum. The time period is the "Point Of Know Return" Tour and the photo looks very much like one in the POKR tour guide program.
Most likely adrenaline. The whole concert was fast! Sometimes the tapes are a little fast and need speed correction. I'm not sure that is the case here.
I'm a drummer and our task in a band is to keep the time. I know when I get hyped up I tend to speed things up and not even realize it as it's happening. Many drummers use a click track on an in ear bud to stay on time when playing live.
@rickyon Sorry, man, but your info. on this "Studio Recording" is misrepresented, unless you were the only one in the crowd? No audience! This is one of three known recordings from the Pre-Release of Leftoverture - recorded in Louisiana, under pressure- this album changed it all. Steve couldn't concentrate, Kerry took over, writing most all of the songs- showing his inspiration of Christianity. Hit the 'net , you'll find at least 22 songs which have at least a 2nd "Studio Recording" released.
I have no idea what you are talking about! My information on this recording which is live, not a "Studio Recording", is completely accurate. It is from a bootleg recording of a live show in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1976 . What do you mean when you type, in what seems like a condescending manner, "unless you were the only one in the crowd? No Audience!" You can hear the crowd applauding at the end of this recording. I have the whole show. There is lots of audience noise! Please explain.
@eltorocal This is obviously live, because in their heyday, they sounded EXTREMLEY similar the record live. One of the best things about Kansas is that even to this day, they are one of the few bands that are SUPERIOR live. But the ONE thing is that I always thought that the middle part sounds more virtuostic with a violin than 2 moog synths, just my 2 cents.
Born and raised in Tulsa, I was searching for possible video of concerts I attended there in the 70s...and BAM! You go and freak me out with a Tulsa recording of Kansas live at the fairgrounds!
I wore out my Kansas vinyls, playing them over and over again, and to this day every note and lyric of every song remains imbedded in my bitty brain.
It's such a joy to hear the massive talent of Kansas once again and to see there are still other folks who feel the same way.
I love your screen name! I have the whole show but as i noted in the info section almost every other song is played too fast! I've posted lots more Kansas and over 75 of those posts are live so look around and enjoy!....Rick
You're welcome Anton! Have you checked out any of the songs from my band that I've been posting? Arsen was the name, Check them out and let me know what you think!....Rick
Don't know where you keep coming up with these gems but I hope it doesn't stop! Its like getting new Kansas every week or so..... PS.... Dave Hopes masterfull melodic bass lines still and always will inspire me!! never seemed to get the props he deserved!
I agree! Did you know that Hope started on the trumpet in 3rd grade, moved to tuba in the 7th grade and at 13 years old was the youngest member of the musician's union in Topeka, Kansas? He started playing the bass at age 16. His rig was awesome! At one point he used a Crown power amp that most bands back in those days used for the low end in their P.A. systems! I've always loved the sound he got!
BRILLIANT SONG!
