Since 1.8 there has been no animals spawning.... I'm 100% sure that they spawn again... Very slowly.... So save ur animals and they won't despawn if u have a animal farm. Make bread!

Notch also updated the fence physics. What I mean about that is, there used to be a invisible block around the fences and you would always be a few inches away from it, now you can get right next to it.
