There is very detailed lore for everything - not just the game story, but also for small trivial things, e.g. exactly why you need to have a blacksmith before you can build a mage tower (because the tower must have mystic "lightning rods" built into its walls). All the little details that make the game world come to life.
WoW, however, turned this amazing fantasy world into a virtual amusement park. Where is WarCraft IV ?

@vorteksio2 When did they say Blackrock never fell? I know the humans didn't win the first war, but I could see how all the missions would line up. If the last human mission is the only one not too I could see that, as well.

Same as people who don't know what Final Fantasy is knows who Sephiroth, Same as people dont know what the Zelda series is about but know who Link and Zelda are or they know Mario is w/o knowing what the Mario series is about.
In addition the graphical style WoW is way different then the Warcraft series. Not to say that WoW is aesthetically unpleasing but seriously, freaking disneyland.
The most glaring difference between WoW and Warcraft 1, 2 and to some extent 3 is how gritty and bleak the atmosphere was in the latter. People dying everywhere in brutal wars, entire towns destroyed, pillage or subverted by necromancy. You knew shit was serious. Thing's like this still kinda exist in WoW, but have no real place alongside the fever for loot, gearscore and gold. Multiplayer always ruins the atmosphere and any significance the story might have had.

@Xerdocreisson WC2 works on new computers indeed, but scroll speed is proportional to CPU clock and was designed for a 66 MHz CPU, so oldtimers like me find it a little bit too fast when scrolling is sped up by a factor 500, i.e. it's almost impossible to scroll to other areas than the corners on the map. Ofc, you can still place the map view in the minimap...

Actually, it wasn't. Orc's win was the canon ending for Warcraft 1. The orcs subjugated the South of Azeroth, and proceded to invade the north. Cue WC2, which the humans DO win.

@randommmetalhead yeah, wow ruined the lore, not blizzard as a company....
Lets see..the original was just orcs vs humans, then the seconds randomly added dragon flights and pointed out orcs were aliens from another planet across a portal... then all hell breaks loose with undead armies being led by a magical orc in a helmet--and the orcs with reclaiming their "shamanistic roots"...
it would have only spammed more and more fantasy elements- even without wow
just look at SC2... its so disjointed

i never got to finish this game, i got killed by a wall of slime monsters in a cave, that was the last tim i played it, about 10 years ago

the first game i ever played was WC2 while seeing my dad play it and i was hooked
i also got the experience to play WC1 but only the first 4 missions of orcs as well as the humans, the controls were not user friendly in the MSDOS
U gotta imagine how Blizzard came a VERY long way, now w/ WOW's 2nd expansion and etc.

Actually, it wasn't. Orc's win was the canon ending for Warcraft 1. The orcs subjugated the South of Azeroth, and proceded to invade the north. Cue WC2, which the humans DO win.

@skinflint420 I do remember that firearms came up in Japan in edo period (1603 - 1868) and that fireworks were invented in China during the Song dynasty (960 - 1279). btw: wiki and google are your friends, use 'em.

@MAWK93 Death Knights were actually zombies, of some sort. It's been a while since I've played Warcraft II, but as my memory may serve me well, it goes like this. After the first war, the necromancers were slain by Gul'Dan if I'm not mistaken. To fill the absense of the departed Necromancers, they dug up the corpses of the Knights slain in the first war. Through a dark ritual they bound the souls of the Necromancers in the bodies of the Knights, and strenghtened them through jewellery. continued

Did you also know that Warcraft 3: Reign of chaos is not only a sequel to Warcraft but also a sequel to Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness and Warcraft 2: Beyond the Dark Portal? It's a fucking 8 year sequel not a competitor.

@Vladdyboy We waited 8 years for a game with worse gameplay than Warcraft 1 and 2. Low numbers, heroes and creeping ruined the game...I mean you want a game with massive armies, not with small commandos! Warcraft 3 did only two good things 1)Bring Starcraft mode in WC franchise with totally different factions 2)One of the best editor ever
By the way Warcraft 1 was worse than Dune 2 that had aircraft, more interesting unit and building ability, terrain that influence speed. Warcraft 2 improved it

you know i think the person at the end is bolvar because in warcraft 3 u dont see stormwind but in wow the first ruler was bolvar he was the regent lord so in a way ur playing as bolvar in warcraft 2
