  • MrDalekJD bought me here!

  • Thank you so much :) did my exam earlier on in the week and political poems came up! This video helped me so much thanks xx

  • Did My Exam Today And This Video Really Helped Me! Thank You! :)

  • You are amazing.

    Seriously.

I knew nothing about this poem 10 hours before my exam, watched this video and wrote a pretty decent essay!

    Thank-you so much <3 x

  • This helped me so much and I used this in my exam today comparing it to two Scavengers!

    Thankyou!

I also have a question, I forgot to write in my paper reference number in for both the paper 1 and paper 2 exam completely, fortunately someone noticed it today which made me realise that I also forgot to put it in Paper 1, is this a problem? Should I go talk to my teacher? Thanks in advance.

  • I just finished my exam, and the question was to compare the methods poet used to show politica/social views from Two Scavengers with one other poem, I chose this and you helped me out so much! I cannot thank you enough!

  • just finished the exam

i compared two scavengers with this

    i think it went great

  • could you also, compare this poem with two scavingers

  • THIS IS SOOOOOOOOO GOOD!

  • I have my exam this afternoon. The fact that I was searching youtube for revision tells you that I was struggling at best. I am now doing this poem in my essay - regardless of the question. THANKYOU! <3

  • good vid but I don't get why purple weeds are oxymoron with amiable weeds. someone please explain

  • @General1Abz I think it means the vibrant colour strongly contrasts/almost contradicts the barren waste land of District 6.

  • @ruizucool @General1Abz That and the fact that weeds are usually seen as hostile and unwanted yet here they are portrayed as friendly.

  • Paper 2 Section A here I come.

  • This has helped me so much! thanks man! im gonna go through them a second time

  • Do you do cluster 2???

  • @AlliyaK Nope, sorry

  • You have no idea how useful this is. Shame ive only found it now... with the exam tomorrow :L:L (our language papers and lit are switched for some reason :/)

  • Learnt more from you in 8ish minutes than I have in 2 years, thanks so much!

  • o man thanks alot i found you got english paper 2 toomoro afternoon.

    wish me good luck

  • Man, I wish you were my English teacher :(

  • I've learnt more from you in the past 10 mins than I have from my English Teacher in two years.

  • You're A Lifesaver, Thank You !

  • I just watched all your cluster 1 poem guides, thanks man!

  • @seneson A pleasure- watch them again in the morning!

  • Thank you so much, this was really helpful. But I have a question: do you consider this poem to be autobiographical because I read a quote from Tatamkhulu which said it was "entirely autobiographical" but my teacher told me that this was a fictional character instead as he describes these feeling as if he were a black man.

  • @ruizucool yeah, i was wondering if it was a character or not

  • @weirdalienguy @ruizucool It is autobiographical but it really doesn't make any difference to this exam- just use the word "persona" and you'll be fine.

  • What would you compare this to???????

    Preferably something not political??

Also thankyou for this, its amazingly helpful. I had 8 months off school and never did some of these poems. Fingers crossed I could get a low A now :) xx

  • thanks for the lesson your a great teacher <3

  • 6 standers to represent District "6"??

  • Mate keep uploading videos like this they are amazing!!!!!

  • These are truly fantastic. Thank you. i've got my exam in a week, and this is helping me. I hope you get some break for your generosity.

  • this is great thankyou:)

quick question, we've always been taught 'Structure' (as in physical layout) as either 'form' or 'layout', I looked at a few exam q's at it says 'Compare the layout'

I've always know Structure is the way the poem unfolds ect, not the physical layout ..but I'm not sure You've called it structure, but do form and layout mean the same thing as physical structure? I just don't want to get confused in my exam!

    thanyou

  • 2:15 I also like to think that there is a middle stanza ("No sign say it is...") which could hint at the breaking of apartheid, and the fact that there is the same number of stanzas before and after this 'breaking' signifies that again nothing has changed.

  • Thank you sooo much! I used this poem my GSCE early entry exam in yr 11 and got an A! I love this poem so much I'm tempted to use this in my AS exam tomorrow. =) Thanks again!

  • very useful, thank you!

hopefully i do ok in my exam :)

  • Thankyou so much for all the help, with this and Limbo.

But who are you and why do you do this? Bit of a strange question, but I honestly don't understand. Are you a teacher, or?... And why do you choose to help out teens like us? As I don't see how this could benefit you. Sorry, I'm just curious ^^

  • Thank you soo much! Your analysis is incredible and really helpful! I hope it's okay but I downloaded this and your Island Man study guide as well so I can replay it over. I've linked it to my friends on facebook as well - the deserve the grade too! ;D thanks again!

  • @KissVirgin09 My pleasure, glad to be of assistance. OK to download I suppose(although I'd obviously prefer as many youtube hits as possible) and great to share on Facebook. Cheers.

  • Thanks so much, my anthology is packed with notes now ;)

  • this was really helpful thankyou :) -- not to be a douche but the poem actually has 6 stanzas :S

  • @ExStatiicc You missed "No sign says it is (...)". This also counts as a stanza, so there are 7 stanzas. ;)

  • @Draggy28 look on bbc bitesize - he is right

  • @Draggy28 bbc bitesize says this is not counted as a stanza.

  • @gillingham45 BBC bitesize is wrong.

  • @bm124 it's called a 'caesura' according to my teacher...

  • My exams tomorrow and i rember my TEACHER mentioning you and she was right you were some BLOODY amazing help in my exam. Thank you.

  • Really helpful, thanks man!

Thought i should let you know, at 4:35 you're talking about the purple weeds and saying hows it's an unusual colour for weeds but the poet could be talking about thistles as the thistle's flower is purple. Thought i'd let you know :D

  • This is very helpful and you make really good points, thankyou ;)

  • thanks for this got my exam in an hour, left it till the last minute but watched most of your video's theyve all been helpful

  • There is no nose WTF? @6.40

  • @idiot12gh I must sincerely apologise, you are entirely right- there is no nose. Any other deliberate mistakes spotted will win a prize.

  • Arghh stopped working after 4:57. It's really helpful, though, thanks for uploading. Probably my best bet for cramming 4 hours before the exam. If there's motivation on sale, let me know where to buy some, please :)

  • YOU ARE GOD!

    thanks so much!

seriously, bbc bitesize or something should employ you for these videos

  • finally! it's so good to hear or see an analysis that only gives you useful information. i had no idea of the apartheid policy until just now from you. thanks this is brilliant! :)

  • The repeption of body parts could also highlight the simularities within humans, in a kind of ironic exposure at the stupidity of apartheid. Just a thought :)

    Great vid!

  • thanks a lot :) really helped me the morning of my GCSE english literature exam :D

  • @MegaMultiverse Not meaning to worry you but you do know that this poem is not in the literature exam: it's part of language paper 2 which is on June 10th

  • @bm124 In the literature poem exam for pre-1914 and Simon Armitage and Carol Anne Duffy etc. We used a structure of: Intro, Structure, Language, Imagery, Conclusion for our essays. In example question from poem's from other cultures it appears that it asks you specifically for structure or language etc. How then should I lay out my essay?

  • @bm124 - hehe..."Not meaning to worry you" .. I think he must be crying by now!! :D

  • @MegaMultiverse but this isn't part of the english literature poems though?

  • OMG! Thank you soooooo much for this its going to really help me in my test 2morrow! : )

  • Thank You so much :) This has helped me write more notes on this poem and I should be able to add them into my exam!

  • Two Words ...

    THANK YOU!!! :)

My english intermediate 2 exam is on thursday and i think you have just saved me !

    Again , Thaaank you!!! :)

We need more people on Youtube like you, Not like Screaming Kids who sing badly or Have really high pitch voices.

    Helped alot..

    Thank you soo much :)

  • Very nice of you to say so. Keep checking back for more and tell your friends!

  • thank you - this has been very useful

    really helped with revision

  • wow, really helpful thanks alot!

  • OMG! Thank you soooooo, sooo! MUCH! You are a life saver! I have the exam mock tomorrow and i know its a mock but i really want a good mark as it will count towards my final exam!

  • could you also say that the purple aimable weeds represent the happiness that was implanted into that ground and however much the goverment try and distory it they cant distory their happiness, would that be ok? thank you for your videos (:

  • thanks so much this is so helpful!!!

  • your analysis has been really helpful for me, ive got the exam on thursday and this has added to my revision. I just wanted to say about the links which you didnt pick up on between theglass window, which is a metaphorical barrier. then throwing the object to shiver down the glass. He wants to break the barrier, but shiver isnt a very strong word as he knows that it wont make a difference

  • thanks 4 all of the help u have given me, if possible, would you please be able 2 do an analysis for 2 Scavengers in a Truck, 2 Beautiful People in a Mercedes; and What Were They Like? And thanks again for all of the help uve given me (btw, plz dont comment on the awful gammar, punctuation and spelling in this comment xD)

  • Wouldn't dream of it! What Were They Like is already done (see my other videos) and I'm aiming to do the remaining Cluster 1 poems as soon as I have time but the kit I use is currently not available so it may take a little longer than I'd like.

  • i have an early entry exam in a few days, and as an A-grade student, this would have been impossible without ur help. thanks again

  • I was thinking this as well, you could also say that the weeds are symbolic of the fun and laughter and they purple represents this, weeds are often hard to get red off, so its saying that the views of the black people may still live on even if they are not wanted.

thanks for your videos, there great!

sorry if that didnt really make sence.

  • Could it be said that when describing the dead weed as purple, he is not only saying this because he feels sympothetic but also to show that colour does not determine who or what a person/creature is.

  • Interesting idea. You could take this to the next step and compare it with "smooth bashed in head" from Vultures and discuss the superficial judgements made by society and how these can often be incorrect (the "head" ends up "inclined affectionately to hers" which is in stark contrast to the brutality of the metaphor used to describe it just as the vibrancy of the colour "purple" is in contrast to the standard preconceptions of weeds.)

  • All of your videos have helped my sooo much! Thank you!

  • You are the best :)

  • thanks alot for this!

hands on head, i swear i learnt more from this than i learnt from a years worth of lessons from a dispicable teacher haha

only constructive comment i can make is that, you could have slowed down a little, otherwise fantastic!

    thanks once again!

  • OMG yes how creepy it came up in the exam! i wrote everything you said holy shit your so good :D

  • Got my exam in an hour! So nervous! Thanks for the video xxx

  • My english teacher shown this is class today.. haha

You do a so much better job than she does.

it would have been so much better if you put all the poems up though..

  • That taught me more than my english teacher has all week! exam tommorrow- ARGH!

  • No need for ARGH- watch the others and send questions if you've got them.

  • in the final stanza, could you say the juxtaposition in connotations between 'burn' and 'shiver' shows the dichotomy between whites and blacks?

  • Not something I'd ever thought of before but this seems like a really interesting idea. You'd need to be careful to explain it in detail though, maybe linking in the fact that the glass itself becomes a metaphor for the divide between them. It's destruction could therefore represent the black population coming in from the cold so to speak! In terms of further comparison you could then link the word "burn" and the anger it suggests to the "hot slow step on the burning ground" in "Limbo".

  • Thanks

  • Thank you, very deep.
