just wondering,,, i have had mine for about 4 days, and it is like really slow about diggesting ? and how comes that some of the plant "mouths" sometimes grow inside each other does it mean anything`?
1) dont have much sunlight.. would florecent lights due?
2) what happens in the winter when they die temporarly or hibernate -whatever- do i still water them untill the summer?
3) i understand that you really sholdnt use manure or anything like that.. but im puzzled because i dont have professional plant stores here where i live -egypt- can i just use beach sand? as somthing that has no nutriants or anything? or can i just use sand from a local park?
@emc201983--I just bought a tiny one in a plastic case that can be used as a terranium, but it has a smell like an insecticide. Does yours have that smell? It appears that you have yours outside. Mine is inside and it scents up the whole room.
i had a venus flytrap that kept growing traps with its leaves curled outward makeing the trap unable to close when i tryed feeding it i ended up loseing it when i left in the direct sunlight for a week and burned it up was wondering why the traps kept growing that way
How do you do that? I mean, i have bought many of them, but they all die in some weeks ... How much water, how big pot? Please help me!! Do i have to take out the ugly old traps?
@Xyonon flytrapcare(dot)com Make sure that you're watering with rain water, distilled water or reverse osmosis water ONLY. Never tap water, as there are too many minerals in it that will kill the plant. Also, make sure that it's planted in peat moss, with perlite or silica sand. Anything enriched, like Miracle Grow will also kill the plant because all the extra nutrients will burn the roots.
very nice man. I've tried to do a timelapse, but I get impatient and move the plant and lose the whole effect. Great work and a lot of patience. Looks like towards the end of the vid the plant was getting increased amounts of sunlight, making me think it's during the summer, I hope that it's now in dormancy otherwise you may lose it due to stress. Great job tho!
@maddcatone my plant never got dormacy since about 10 years, i dont know how the plant deals with this, but i dont want to change anything in her life ;-)
@emc201983 Oh wow! If that's the case then I recommend dividing it, cause you might have a beneficial mutation in the species. I would love to have flytraps that didn't all shrivel away at the end of the summer.
not bad mate i think the music fits perfectly and its weird how the plant moved in its pot to the left. did you not have to put it into dormancy to keep it alive?
@Snakefang284 go to flytrapstore com, they have seeds and actual flytraps, pitcher plants, sundews, and other type of carnivorous plants. Educate yourself first before buying because it will drive you crazy when you're trying to find the supplies to start from scratch, but that store has it all.
That's pretty awesome. I've always wanted one... I got to try and take care of a couple for my biology class, but I failed miserably... :\ good thing it wasn't for a grade. What do they eat besides insects? Can you give them a piece of raw meat if there's a lack of insects around? Or would I have to go to my pet store and pick up some crickets?
@Piranhaboy01 Well in my area catching insects isn't exactly fun, and I don't care all that much to bother, however crickets at my local pet store are fairly cheap. I'm guessing those should be perfectly fine... are they ok to be eaten dead? Cuz I don't wanna have to try and catch one of those suckers alive, even if it is in a box.
@Fragacide they are fine to be eaten dead. you might have to wiggle the insect a small bit to stimulate the trap to close then tug on a leg to continue the process. flytraps will close to trap and then close some more if the insect doesn't escape
Well done. I think I am going to get one. I had one when I was a teenager and it lasted a while. Now I have heaps of indoor plants. Get work, and I am glad you stuck with it. It was interesting to watch the crown of the plant migrate across the pot.
Plz can someone help me? whats happening to my venus fly trap? ( I didnt buy it with roots and soil, I took it from a store :-) , so my VFT is turning yellow. The other day it started to turn red from the top of the mouth. My VFT is without roots, so im not very surprised to see it die.)
@Donciulis don't worry about the roots. even when in full growth, they still only have a few hair-like roots. Just make sure the bulb is always in very wet moss and put the plant in the sun. You will be amazed what it grows like then. The red color will appear on all the traps. look at my vids and you'll see
Mad3InRomania, Without dormancy your plant will grow much slower. After a couple years it will die from exaustion. IF you live in a place that it doesent get colder than 20 degrees farenhieght, then you can grow them out doors in full sun and durring fall (now they will begin going dormant. In late febuary to mid march they will begin coming out of dormancy. Check out Sarracenia North west. Free care shhets and awsome plants for good prices. I orderd bedore an its always good.
@stephenBquick If it doesnt have a dormancy period (which it uses to replenish its energy and grow the rhizome under the compost) it will probably die after 3 or 4 years.

@ivancekx the venus flytrap doesn't bloom every year... but this spring there were 6 flowers and the flytrap split into two, I got about 100 seeds ;)

Yup, you have to remove the "black mouths", the dead mouths of the plant. It's normal to some mouths to die.

well, my plant is about 8 years old and never hat dormacy...
it grows very fast and now its even going to bloom...
by the way: i just cut off 12 leaves and got 9 new plants from them...
emc201983 2 years ago
Really?? Does yours slow down in growth durring winter at all? Congrats on the leaf cuttings :D I Get my new plants through rhimzone division.
Killerspider762 2 years ago
yes, it slows down and makes smaller traps and they are less red, then in summer
emc201983 2 years ago
Cool, what temps do you keep yours in durring winter? Mine often experience freezing temps but come back in spring just fine.
Killerspider762 2 years ago

because the traps can only close 3 or 4 times and then they are useless for the plant...
they also have a limited lifetime without catching something, thats normal
