I know. The lighting is no good because the glass reflects so we could not use any lighting.
As to the Japanese cake watercolors, they turns to be chalky and the binder sticky. Maybe more suitable for painting on mulberry paper or shikishi board. It's convenient than tube color to use, but the price is very expansive. How do you like them?
Very good explanation & very true indeed. many Western shops do not know about this and advice to use Western watercolors. Which DO bleed when wet mounting is done. I tried to explain some shops but they simply do not understand why, they keep saying that both are water based. Too sad. (they regard the Marie colors as cheap quality)
Well, my late teacher would only use rouge from the tubed color, and he would use mineral blue or green from azurite powers, Indigo and umber from the traditional chips and gamboge from a stick, But nowadays, everybody uses Maries's. They are improving in quality of packaging and have come up with some nice new colors too. It seems very hard to put the natural colors into tube while maintain their natural beauty.
Now you can use western watercolors without worry about bleeding in wet-mounting thanks to the Silicone dry-mounting technology. BTW, have you ever tried gouache color on rice paper? Its binder is more stable, isn't it? My teacher always use the gouache color Chinese White in a big tube. And I have found Alizarin Crimson in gouache a good alternative to rouge for my rose painting.
I feel that the color tones in Maries paint sets appear more authentic in Chinese painting. Do you? Barbara

That painting is AMAZING!...Specially for being painted 20 years ago. You should do a vid on painting with the colors.
