Although some individuals with autism are gifted, many, many are not, and most probably have diagnosable MR (mental retardation) as well--it's an unfortunate reality.
@moearly Well, I'm glad someone sees my point. I think of any diagnosis that isn't totally understood as more of a box for which to put people in so that they may be helped. The more behavioural patterns found in the people with the diagnosis, the more efficiently shaped the box is. I think this way because all the Autistic people at my charity are almost totally different people. They are not "autistic" but they have "autism". I could of expressed it better but do you see my point?

There's not enough known about it yet to confidently separate them in their own categories at this time, but people are doing research and trying to learn more about it. Hopefully their insights will help distinguish different types of autism to allow for the development of more specific treatments for the different types. And I hope they find a cure, too!

When you take into the account the fact that Aspergers is indeed on the spectrum, you can't really discredit it as not being Autism. I see that when you speak of Autism, you speak of what is commonly known as "AD" or "Classic Autism", whereas I am defining the similar characteristics of PDD, Aspergers, and Autism. These behaviours are common because Autistic kids sometimes don't know how to properly express their emotions so they resort to doing things such as bashing their heads through walls!
To continue my argument, I'd like to add in the fact that many of the behaviours you mentioned being present in Autistic kids IF they are present can most likely be stopped with early interventions and behaviour therapy, and total dedication form both parents! That's what many people such as yourself and celebrities such as Jenny McCarthy fail to realize! There is no simple "cure" or solution to the behavioural aspects of Autism! @gunmoon2 Yes, there is a simple cure. Removing mercury from the brain cures those behaviors. Behavioral "therapies" are useless until the mercury is removed. And, if we removed the mercury from your head, you might be able to act like a human being.
You know, the whole problem with the Mercury theory is that it was debunked a long time ago, though people are pushed into believing it anyways out of fear. Also, if children WERE truly being poisoned by Mercury, then where would it come from? Thimerosal was removed from routine childhood vaccines quite a few years back! Of course there is still the concern over women who eat fish while they're pregnant, but doctors let women know on a regular basis to NEVER eat fish while pregnant!

@foresam I agree...autism is a nightmare. My family's been through hell but my son is a great kid & very blessed. You say my kid is PDD/NOS or Asperger's? He's classic autism. Has a full blown autism diagnosis. That diagnosis was made at one of the best children's hospitals in this country. I spoke about a lot of great things my son is doing but my son is still impacted greatly enough that the doctors/experts have concluded that an autism diagnosis is still appropriate at this time.

As you may know, parents with autistic children need to find a psychologist who knows the right test to use for individuals with a language-based disorder in order to get an accurate IQ when conducting neuropsychological testing.

Although some individuals with autism are gifted, many, many are not, and most probably have diagnosable MR (mental retardation) as well--it's an unfortunate reality.

@moearly Well, I'm glad someone sees my point. I think of any diagnosis that isn't totally understood as more of a box for which to put people in so that they may be helped. The more behavioural patterns found in the people with the diagnosis, the more efficiently shaped the box is. I think this way because all the Autistic people at my charity are almost totally different people. They are not "autistic" but they have "autism". I could of expressed it better but do you see my point?

@Redflowers9 I do think that I see your point. It's hard to know how many "autisms" (I guess you could say) are out there. There's not enough known about it yet to confidently separate them in their own categories at this time, but people are doing research and trying to learn more about it. Hopefully their insights will help distinguish different types of autism to allow for the development of more specific treatments for the different types. And I hope they find a cure, too!

He wrote two books about this so there's no need for anyone else to duplicate his work.

@foresam I agree...autism is a nightmare. My family's been through hell but my son is a great kid & very blessed. You say my kid is PDD/NOS or Asperger's? He's classic autism. Has a full blown autism diagnosis. That diagnosis was made at one of the best children's hospitals in this country. I spoke about a lot of great things my son is doing but my son is still impacted greatly enough that the doctors/experts have concluded that an autism diagnosis is still appropriate at this time.

He's a Cub Scout, snow skis, reads, sings, loves Taylor Swift, has friends, strong math skills, is very loving, plays the trumpet at school. My son was severely autistic w/no speech, eye contact, social or play skills. He has a richer life & more class than you'll ever have. He's a GREAT kid, very smart & there are many other GREAT kids w/autism out there.

As you may know, parents with autistic children need to find a psychologist who knows the right test to use for individuals with a language-based disorder in order to get an accurate IQ when conducting neuropsychological testing.
