you must be very proud of your dad.his minor blues solo on DEEP IN THE HAT(WALT BOLDEN LP)is one of the most beautiful guitar solo i've ever heard.and i am still listening him.
elvin always had interesting guitar players in his bands during this time.
roland prince was with elvin from around 72 to 79
he made several recordings with elvin during that period. Most of them on european labels. He was truly an unsung hero on guitar.During those times ,the flavor on guitar was joe pass, pat martino, pat metheny, john mclaughlin. The up and comers who were getting a lot of press were scofield, abercrombie.
This video does not really show off the talent that he had on his instrument.
I love it how a lot of the jazz guys just kind of sit there and bop away BUT with Elvin he beats the crap out of everything. every single not he plays he frigin' means. And you can totally feel the power he puts into it in his playing. Such a massive sound, and people think that jazz musicians from that era (even though im quite sure this is a bit later in Elvin's life) are meant to be conservative and subtle. PFFFT Elvin plays louder and with more power then any rock drummer!
unfortunately I don't think so. The closest thing is probably "Mr. Thunder", which is a quartet plus an additional percussionist, from the same year as this performance. It also features Prince on guitar, but has Milton Suggs on bass and Steve Grossman on sax.
