La petite mort, French for "the little death", is a metaphor for orgasm.
More widely, it can refer to the spiritual release that comes with orgasm, or a short period of melancholy or transcendence, as a result of the expenditure of the "life force". Literary critic Roland Barthes spoke of la petite mort as the chief objective of reading literature. He metaphorically used the concept to describe the feeling one should get when experiencing any great literature.
I only bring it up to help those interested in Dowland's lyrics appreciate them more. Just look at this beautiful song's play on death and the lady's ability to cause both death and happiness.
My highest compliments to Sotto Voce aka civileso. I love many of your videos and this one is so wonderful and a feast for the eye as well as the ear.
gorgeous... such a voice makes the words of the sing so much more bittersweet. Quite aside from spurning such a heavenly voice, I daresay it would be sweet death to me. Thank you for the lovely post.
Thanks for posting. In response to Latin language, Latin lives in renaissance choral music, and isn't obsolete. Investigate composers such as Gombert,Manchicourt and the like and you will hear Latin alive and well Thanks! Nice to have met you!
