@MrTinlizzy - Talking about Queen. I would love to have heard Phil Lynott (after the breakup of Thin Lizzy) on a mid 80's Queen album. Maybe "The Works". A well written song with Freddie & Phil just as "Under Pressure" with David Bowie. That would have been awesome !
2 guitar players in a band can go one of 3 ways, they can weave, like the stones,or go one strictly rhythm one strictly lead like AC/DC or both play exactly the same thing...like this!!
They don't play exactly the same, I don't know the exact English word for it, but in Denmark it is called 'to play with more voices'. It is a very common thing to do in music generally, both with singing and backing vocals and with instruments. Thin Lizzy did it with 2 guitars and made their remarkable and unforgetable sound. If you ever tried to play these things on a guitar (or any other instrument), you would know what I'm talking about.
@jakobkuli Yes, It's a 1/4 octave harmony and i think that somehow they have a contrast of major and minor keys between the two of them. Listen to " Emerald" from the Jailbreak cd with a good pair of headphones, when they play the main melody in the middle of the song, pull one earcup off your right ear, then go back and do the same with the left. You will hear a few notes different . Their harmonies are the most difficult to play !
It's a shame that here in the US ,TL never got the radio play of all their other great songs. So many people are unaware here of songs like "Johnny" "Bad Rep" "Rocky" etc. I play these songs for friends and people I meet and it's like new territory.

The thing that I appreciate most in Phil Lynott is that he doesn't give up his deeply romantic side (even in the heaviest tunes). And I'm amazed also at his way of letting his bass play the acoustic guitar part.
Phil actually played all the acoustic guitar parts on Thin Lizzy records. He has a certain strumming technique with bass & acoustic that's really distinctive.
Anyone new to Lizzy who digs this tune should check out:
Romeo & The Lonely Girl; Fight or Fall; With Love; Dear Lord. All great laid back Lizzy tunes that still have a nice beat driving it along.
Don't want to start up this arguement again, but Phil only really discoverd drugs when Thin Lizzy were recording Black Rose in Paris in 1979 so he wasn't doing drugs for a 15 years. At most 7 years. Not much better but it had to be stated.
Many great musicians hve taken drugs such as Jimi Hendrix,Elvis,Keith Richards and others. Do they deserve more time? And what about millions of people around the world who take drugs? What gives any of us the right to say who deserves time and who doesn't
My point, again, is some people think that stars that take drugs deserve more time than regular people, or people who died in other ways. This is not what I believe, and I don't think that makes me "fucked-up". It's just my opinion, just like you have yours.
Phil Lynott was a great songwriter too. He'd reference CuCullen and then write these crime dramas and tough guy tunes and you just bought it,man b/c the delivery was so goddamn real.Phil would've busted a cap in 50cent's ass anyday. This song,as bittersweet as it is, is probably my favorite Lizzy tune.
It's the only Lizzy lineup IMO, though the Gary Moore/Scott Gorham era was a good combo too. After all Moore did that beautiful solo on Still In Love With You. I read the Thin Lizzy biography The Rocker, and I have to see I was a bit teary eyed at the end when reading of Phils death all those years ago, the guy was an absolute genius.
RIP Phil! Whats done is done. While I am terribly sad Phil is gone, blacksabfan is right, he did it to himself. If you watch the videos from their early career with eric bell you can actually see phil deteriorate from then to his later videos with john sykes. Same thing with hendrix and and jim morrison too.
Hard drugs and the destruction they reap are awful.Legalize pot so what.
None of us will really know what demons Phil Lynott had within him.He seemed too proud to tell the world about it and so his escape through drugs became public knowledge when it was obvious he was losing the battle.
Such a sad story, imagine what he could have achieved.
Burn in hell...just because I don't feel he deserved a longer life because he did drugs for 15 years...I know people that died because of drunk drivers and people that were innocent and died from accidents...those people deserve more time...not people that abuse drugs and die. Get your priorities straight asshole.
I just read this after I made the car wreck comment which to me, affirms what I just said and for the record - I have lost half of my friends to drugs....RIP, everyones bodies and genetics are differnt. When did Phils dad die ? I'll bet $ it was before 65... lots of factors played into this mans demise ---> women, fame, fortune, and not to even mention he gave everything he had to the fans ....us. By the time he realized what he had done it very may have been too late... see ya in church mang ;^)
Yeah that's true, but it doesn't really matter how good your body is if you do that much coke and heroin for that long. The only thing that killed Lynott was prolonged drug abuse, which has a 100% success rate if you do those types of drugs that long. People come across like I'm disrespecting Lynott...no, he was a great musician, one of my favorites, but my sympathies lie with his mother, his fans, and people that die from other things that weren't their own doing...not with Lynott himself.
I'm not saying I'd rather have him dead. Can't you read? I've read Putterford's book and yeah...he abused himself to the point where he knew he was gonna die and was giving away his most prized possessions at the end. If Lynott wasn't famous, you wouldn't give a shit. If a non-famous person did drugs over 15 years and died, you'd probably at best not care, and at worst say 'good riddence'. Just because someone is famous doesn't make them "more deserving".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I love Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott as much as the next person, but why does anyone DESERVE a longer life when they spend years abusing their body with drugs and alcohol? If he died in an accident, then maybe...but he killed himself over a long period of time. It's still sad, but as far as deserving more time...I respectfully disagree.
Of course Phil Lynott deserved more time. Everybody does.Blacksabfan do you think Phil wanted to do all those drugs? Of course not but he couldn't stop. Just because he made a mistake, like everybody does in their lives, he doesn't deserve to live? That's a fucked up mentality.
Probably not once he knew he was gonna die. Before then though he took them without a second thought. I'm sorry that it upsets you but the harsh reality of it all is "no, he didn't deserve more time." The man destroyed himself and you can point fingers at others, but at the end, the only one to blame is the one who took the drugs. I'm a Lynott fan, go look in my channel, but I'm also a realist.
And no, not everyone deserves more time. We have population problems as it is.
As far as making mistakes...everytime Lynott took another hit, he was making a mistake. I wasn't just one mistake, it was the repetition of the same mistake over and over. Unforuntely he was never given a big enough scare to get off the drugs.
It was not a repetition of mistakes. If giving up drugs was as easy as make it out to be it wouldn't be so dangerous. You make it sound as if Phil was an evil person who didn't care about the harm his addiction was causing his loved ones but I'm sure that is not the case. He tried to stop.
My beef is that if it wasn't Phil Lynott, he'd be demonized. Or you wouldn't give a shit. I just don't think that because he was a rock star that was loved by millions, that he should get anymore time than some non-famous person. That's been my point the entire time. I guess because I don't create biases based on how famous someone was before they died that means I have a "fucked-up mentality".
This comes from one of the biggest Lizzy fans there is.
Never did I say Phil Lynott deserved more time because he was famous I just think its wrong to say he doesn't deserve to live because he did drugs. I am not biased and have made no indications that I am so. I am simply saying its unfair you have deemed Phil Lynott as imperfect and not worthy enough to live which seems very wrong.
I didn't say he wasn't worthy enough to live. I said he didn't deserve anymore time than what he was given. I would say that about anyone who abused drugs that long. Yes, it's hard to quit, but I guess it's a matter of will and what's more important to you, now isn't it? If you think it's wrong, so be it. I don't. I'm just tired of all the hero worship. The man did impressive stuff in his life, made several mistakes, didn't listen to the warnings, and died. Seems like no fault but his own.
Well whether Phil deserved more time or not doesn't matter now. The most important thing is remember him for his musical abilities and genius. That is what he would have wanted.
Life is full of addiction...half our grandparents are opiate addicts.
You and I are a car wreck away from being Morphine addicts.
I could write a hundred things to make you think differently about your thoughts...
I have been a major Sabbath fan since 1975 and thats 31 years my friend and I can tell you that at 12 years of age they affected me greatly in a negative way as well as a good one... but I digress.
The car wreck thing isn't a choice though. Ever listen to Thin Lizzy's songs? Lynott knew damn well he was dying and that what he was doing wasn't good. Did he stop? No. Why? Who knows. Some people get wrapped up in the hero worship thing where anything that remotely questions blind praise is subjected to several "thumbs down" comments. Whatever. At least I know MY priorities are straight.
You don't need tabs...I worked this out when I was 16 - Lizzy harmonies are simple to work out. Mostly major scale intervals...day out for grannies !!
I LOVE YOU TUBE !!! This footage is golden bro. Thanks for putting this up. RIP Phil. There will NEVER be another; not even close, or a half decent imitation.
This is probably my favorite Lizzy tune; it captures everything that made them unique: Evocative lyrics, a mesmerizing, soulful vocal, and a guitar soli section (twin-leads playing simultaneous "solos") that reaches into some hitherto unreachable place in my heart and stirs my Irish blood.
Been a Lizzy fan since I was 10 and heard 'Jailbreak' on American radio in '76. Their stuff still sounds as good today and fan loyalty seems diehard. A real testament to Philo. Can't wait for the Vibe in '08. Gotta watch all these great vid's before they take 'em down...
Thank you so much for posting this....I love thin lizzy,a lot of us americans here still cherish this style of rock to this day...screw all the rest of that crap
"I love thin lizzy,a lot of us americans here still cherish this style of rock to this day.." not enough of you did at the time these guys were touring the states unfortunately
I saw Thin Lizzy and Queen in Phila 1977 and 1983 Lizzy in Pensauken,N.J. Then Scott and John at Trump Marina 2004 with Deep Purple,, Great Bands of all time...
fucking legends does anyone have footage of when Lizzy toured with Queen...This is the best era of Lizzy Lynotts voice is spot on shame basically 10 years later he was dead :(DAMN HERION

It was not a repetition of mistakes. If giving up drugs was as easy as make it out to be it wouldn't be so dangerous. You make it sound as if Phil was an evil person who didn't care about the harm his addiction was causing his loved ones but I'm sure that is not the case. He tried to stop.
littlefirestarter 3 years ago
Did you even read what I said before???
My beef is that if it wasn't Phil Lynott, he'd be demonized. Or you wouldn't give a shit. I just don't think that because he was a rock star that was loved by millions, that he should get anymore time than some non-famous person. That's been my point the entire time. I guess because I don't create biases based on how famous someone was before they died that means I have a "fucked-up mentality".
This comes from one of the biggest Lizzy fans there is.
blacksabfan 3 years ago
Never did I say Phil Lynott deserved more time because he was famous I just think its wrong to say he doesn't deserve to live because he did drugs. I am not biased and have made no indications that I am so. I am simply saying its unfair you have deemed Phil Lynott as imperfect and not worthy enough to live which seems very wrong.
littlefirestarter 3 years ago 2
I didn't say he wasn't worthy enough to live. I said he didn't deserve anymore time than what he was given. I would say that about anyone who abused drugs that long. Yes, it's hard to quit, but I guess it's a matter of will and what's more important to you, now isn't it? If you think it's wrong, so be it. I don't. I'm just tired of all the hero worship. The man did impressive stuff in his life, made several mistakes, didn't listen to the warnings, and died. Seems like no fault but his own.

Good civil conversation, between you guys
keep it up!
jimymac1 3 years ago
Well whether Phil deserved more time or not doesn't matter now. The most important thing is remember him for his musical abilities and genius. That is what he would have wanted.
littlefirestarter 3 years ago
correction - his dear mother deserved to have her son live a longer life.
Had he a better Doctor he would still be alive and well.
Philo would not appreciate the bickering from any of you so ....kick back and go your own ways but keep it tuned to the LIZ !

Right. His mother deserved it. Although I don't know about the doctor thing.

Life is full of addiction...half our grandparents are opiate addicts.
You and I are a car wreck away from being Morphine addicts.
I could write a hundred things to make you think differently about your thoughts...
I have been a major Sabbath fan since 1975 and thats 31 years my friend and I can tell you that at 12 years of age they affected me greatly in a negative way as well as a good one... but I digress.
humboldtmyche 4 years ago
The car wreck thing isn't a choice though. Ever listen to Thin Lizzy's songs? Lynott knew damn well he was dying and that what he was doing wasn't good. Did he stop? No. Why? Who knows. Some people get wrapped up in the hero worship thing where anything that remotely questions blind praise is subjected to several "thumbs down" comments. Whatever. At least I know MY priorities are straight.

this is the greatest Thin Lizzy song ever.... R.I.P. Phil.... Does anyone have tabs for this awesome song?
guitarlad89 4 years ago
You don't need tabs...I worked this out when I was 16 - Lizzy harmonies are simple to work out. Mostly major scale intervals...day out for grannies !!

Heroin? You mean the CIA's product, if you want to know who killed the man it was the English and US Gov.
As they are killing many others right now.
Check out Michael C. Ruppert.

Philo was INSANELY charismatic, wasn't he?
This is probably my favorite Lizzy tune; it captures everything that made them unique: Evocative lyrics, a mesmerizing, soulful vocal, and a guitar soli section (twin-leads playing simultaneous "solos") that reaches into some hitherto unreachable place in my heart and stirs my Irish blood.
God love you, Philo. You'll never be forgotten.
