  • pardon me, but what's that diesel engine doing in there?!

  • It was my understanding that the diesel unit supplied electric and air pressure for the coaches.

  • Naw, not likely. That heavyweight car likely has gen power, and there were't any HEP cars that I could determine. I doubt a little R-1 Ten Wheeler could haul that train that size, so they likely needed the diesel's power. 1385 may have had an aux. throttle installed for MUing with diesel units-like the Clinchfield #1.

  • @ampicoab Steam locomotives provide air brakes, not just diesel and electric. Steam locomotives have both air pumps and electrical generators. Diesel locomotives provide Dynamic Braking. This works off of the electric traction motor of a diesel locomotive.
