  • Great video thanks for the ride.

  • I've got an 18hp motor just like that, backfires when you shut it off and it floods really easy when starting. I cleaned the carb and put a new pump kit on it. If I try to start with the air filter off, it spits a bit of gas out of the carb and blows air out the carb. Valves sticking? I don't think it's that because if the intake valve was open when it fired, it would blow up, no?

  • @junekentucky look at the float on the eingine mine did the same thing.

  • LOL. I have that exact same mower, though I'm not sure what year mine was made.. Pretty damn old though. Even with the stock single-cylinder 11hp engine it can still do wheelies if you throw it into the highest gear and drop the clutch. I can only imagine how much fun it is with the engine you have on there :)

  • That thing is a beast!!!

  • I cant tell if ur black or white

  • that's awesome!

  • ... idles kinda high... nice match-up though!

  • overkill. lol

  • awesome that's insane lol!

  • Nice but you could damage the transmission with too much power.

  • Just bought an 18 horse for my Snapper. Can't wait!

  • i had a 1980 snapper w/ 8hp briggs good ol mowers

  • Hey, I am looking to purchase an "older" Snapper riding mower to "fix -up" and use as a weekly cutter. Any certain year models to look for or stay away from?

  • I bought mine with a motor that was pretty much blown already (Lots of blue smoke), so baring that they seem to last forever. from the 70's on to today they are pretty much built the same, drive train parts havent changed at all. theyre really simple machines when you get into them.

  • @CoolBreezeClub I have two snappers for sale? but guy's I live in Ontario Canada

one is an 30 inch 8 hp B&S motor and the other is a 1994 Snapper SRM 140 12.5 B&S engine both need little work 425.00 takes the pair..I also have a host of older B&S push mowers...cleaning shop pass the word guy's please and thanks

  • I did something like this. Put a 17.5 brigs on my 1989 33' High Vac Snapper RER. Just replaced the deck today after 22 years of use. Now I am thinking I am going to restore the whole thing. This mower should last for another 22 at this point. Great Video!

  • hey i might be buying a snapper riding mower and two eager push mowers for 75$ good deal? i don tknow the condition all i know is that they run and the snapper has an 8 1/2HP engine and the push mowers have 2 1/2 hp engines in them.

  • Yeah its a good deal. as long as theres nothing "Mechanically" wrong with the motor they are super easy to tune up. even if it doesnt run, but the motor sounds and feels normal when you pull on the cord slowly a couple times they can be brought back to life. usually just a carb rebuild and they run forever. Mine had blue oil smoke when i bought it, so i knew the 11 horse was on its last leg, and i knew when i bought it that i was going to do something like this.

  • That looks dangerous!

  • we need to line em up. my jd has 18hp onan twin.

  • Yes it does

  • I have the same mower but it's painted black with a 4hp snapper push mower Motor. And yet I can pull some kick a•• weeles.

  • try swapping pulleys, Increase the pulley size on the motor and/or decreasing the size on the transaxle(don't forget that your blades run on a different belt). It'll cut your mow time down and have your nieghbors making thier own videos.LOL

  • Not that easy with a snapper. not a belt drive, its an offset center friction wheel and the blades run right off the same crank pully. not much room for changing things around under there. i MAY however put a hydrostat drive on it next year.

  • I did'nt know that ,all I've played with is Craftsman/JD's And Murray's, and they are all belt driven,so, that changes the whole game does'nt it?

  • @beanhill74 whats hydrostatic mean

  • @th19940305

Its a kind of lawn mower transmission.

most older mowers have a belt drive system and a clutch, which works fine, but a Hydro Static unit uses fluid power to power the wheels. the motor drives a belt which in turn gives you Hydraulic pressure.

They are 10 times as smooth, and the forward / reverse is controlled thru a pedal on the floor board and not a shift knob like on most mowers.

The down side is they are more complex and not as cheep to maintain.

  • i do whellies on my snapper im ten

  • i got a 18hp twin cylynder with duel stacks its fast

  • got a 15.5 Briggs on mine, mows the yard in fifth gear running barely over idle and don't use much gas that way either

  • screw all those dumb people below crap takin! your cleaver to put that on a snapper!

  • my cub cadet model 72 is better but i have one of these and i like it

  • The reason i bought this particular mower is because i have a fenced in back yard, and this mower is narrow enough to drive threw the gate. I can also drive it in between the trees and it maneuvers really well for an older mower. If i had bigger acres to mow id have a bigger mower.

  • But if i did have over an acre to mow id probably have a circa 60's Simplicity Landlord. They look just like a full sized tractor, but at only 2 1/2 feet tall.

Cub cadet #72 looks pretty nice.

  • my lawn mowers better

  • Have 5000 people watched a video of your lawn mower?

  • my mower is just like yours but it has a 10HP briggs

WTF are you needing 18 hp?

  • When i bough the mower it had an 11.5 hp motor on it.

I got it cheap because the original motor needed rings bad and smoked badly.

when the motor finally blew about 2 months later i started pricing out how much it was going to cost for a re bore of the block and a new piston and ring kit. it woud have been about another $120 including a carb rebuild kit plus my labor.

for that same $120 i bought a junk craftsman rider and pulled the motor for this mower.

I parted out the rest and got 80 back

  • Plus i think its cool.

My old man neighbor loves it, he calls me Tim Taylor

  • thats a good deal yeah i payed $125 for mine all it needed was a throttle that cost me 11 buck so for a $136 mower its a champ also i gave it a new paint job last year gloss white and cherry red

  • How long did it take to do all maintenance work on replacing the engine and getting all belts/pulleys prepared?

  • my grandfather had one of these but stock it would of been good as a racing mower or even some sort of cart but then he got rid of it

  • Thank you.

Its funny the amount of reaction i get from people driving past my house.

Everybody knows it as the "Forrest Gump" mower.

  • Man, over reving the snot out of that motor...

  • Not so much anymore, all the springs in the governor have been replaced, now it runs a bit slower and allot smoother.

  • Why put a nice engine on a piece of CRAP mower?!?!

  • that opposed twin it running too fast

  • If you change the oil, The stock B&S engine should wear out in about 2038. The 11.5 horse that came with mine lasted about 20 years. then it blew up.

The disk wheel is holding up fine. its got cracks and splits in it, but its to be expected after 20 years. seems to be holding up just fine, no issues.

  • Then I guess I'll just plan to pass mine onto my son and let him do the upgrade. He was born just three weeks before I bought it, so that should work out just fine. Thanks for the info.

  • Thats not necessarily true- i have a 5HP briggs motor about 38 years old- its on a 1970 toro- all original, electric start, splash oiling, still running. I have a few other older motors, about 25 years old- still going. Keep in mind, those motors have aluminum blocks- theyre not cast iron.

Its true, regular oil changes make em last longer - i also use a lil bit of lucas oil additive - believe it or not another long life helper-a fuel shutoff. Helps keep fuel from leaking by and thining the oil.

  • I'm picking up one of these today at my local snapper dealer. I was about to leaev when I decided to see if there were any Snapper videos on Youtube. The side discharge model comes with a 30" cut and a B&S 12.5hp these days. I'm hoping mine will last as long as yours obviously has. I've also thought about "upgrading" the engine one day as you have when the stock B&S wears out. I'm curious though, how is the disc drive tranny holding up against all those horses? Any slippage?

  • looks like a beast dude!

  • I dont know speed, but i do know i can get it going a bit sideways in when im making the turn in my driveway.

I mow in second gear, but when im done i kick it into high and go over everything again. gives it the nice clean lawn lines.

Plus snappers have only one blade, and its like 4 feet long, so it leaves nice manicured lines like a baseball field.

(I have a small yard, so its Ok do things twice)

  • that is pretty fast for second.

how fast does it go in top?

  • wow!!

  • There you go!! I like it. Might have been fewer modifications if you just drilled out new mounting holes for the engine and bolted it down with the carbuetor facing backwards. Since the engine has a flat backside and is equipped with a fuel pump, you don't have to modify the fuel tank. Anyways, neat mower. Now, I'll have to dig out an old Kohler MV20 for my Snapper rider...

  • I did things the way i did for the single reason of keeping the exhaust pointing to the back. i wanted to keep the stock exhaust in place because it makes a nice roar/humming noise. almost airplane like.

    RF

  • Big engine, small machine. It will never stall.
