Get ya trousers on, you're nicked!!!! Best tv series ever made in my view. When I get tired of this mind numbing pc world we live in today, I get my Sweeney box set out and enjoy some true freedom of speech!!
@broadband01 That fuckin' Jack Regan was a bloody good copper ! I'd type that in MORSE if some of you You Tube blighters could understand it ! ☺ RIP John Thaw....
British TV shows was the Best in the world. The Saint (1962) Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969) The Avengers 1960s The Sweeney (1975) The Prisoner (1967)
Blakes 7 (1978) The Professionals (1977) Space: 1999 (1975) Jason King ( 1971) UFO (1970)
The film of this series is going to suck- they'll probably make it some PC bullshit where Carter will be an open homosexual and Haskins will be a black woman or some bullshit like that.
The Sweeny is a classic of it's time and should be left alone.
Great TV in the days before political correctness,Ian Kennedy -Martin wrote some good episodes,so did Trevor Preston.RIP John Thaw & Garfield Morgan Gawd Bless you Guv!
@beeblebroxthe2nd They used Consul GTs for car chase's as the Grannys were to soft suspension wise for the said chases! And the Consul GT was alot quicker anyway!!!
@DaBeesNees100 Still is sometimes. I recall the Sweeney piling out of the public bogs in Chandlers Ford a few years ago, and taking out some tooled-up Bank Robbers. I instantly thought of Regan and Carter when I heard about it. I don't think the Flying Squad were using a 3.0 litre Ford Consul though, more's the pity...!
London needed Regan and Carter last night!! They wouldnt have just stood there and watched the mindless destruction, they would have got stuck right in!!!!
Watched the films the other day. They have their faults, and the first one is a bit better than the second, but still a great blend of crime, violence, politics, and busty women. Great London scenery as well. Diane Keen was quite a looker back in the day!
Regan was a proper copper, beating up snouts and crooks by day, out shagging and drinking all night, then have a shave in his large glass of whisky which he was drinking whilst driving to work in the morning.
@gentil79 it wasn't a Granada ..it was a Consul GT...more agresive than a Granny...had one in 1978, same colour everything, right down to the fog lights
@RichardElden Perhaps it is in someways, but The Professionals series lacks the realistic, gritty, true to life, feel of The Sweeney.I know as ive seen every episode of both shows. The Professionals might have had more exotic villians, weaponry, women, etc, which wasn't seen much in The Sweeney, but The Sweeney had stronger language, very realistic&believable characters. Its like comparing hawaiien 5 O to Dirty Harry or The French Connection.
@RichardElden Is it really? If it was that shit, why has it been voted before as one of the best tv series, ever made? Why have they released dvd packages in Europe&in America of it then?It inspired Life On Mars,Theif Takers&The Bill.It also caused controversey in the Met at the time, because what was shown in the Sweeney, actually happend in real life. The same for The Bill too.Name one police show, either from Britain or America, that can beat this one, from that time period?I can't think of one.
The Mark 1 Granada rules, light years of British Leyland and crap like the Princess and the Marina. My dad had a 3000 GXL in metallic green and this was one classy, refined car. My uncle had a Cortina 2.3 Ghia and this was a flying machine. Ford were definitely the best carmaker in this country in the seventies.
@Glenn1967ful Of course the MK1 Granada rules, the Granada is a work of art as is the Cortina MK3, all Fords are great cars even todays Fords. I had a T, reg MK4 Cortina 2.3 GL with manual gearbox in gold, that was a great car.
Great cars and a great series, but if you think the granny was the best of British 70's cars...I'd go get a reality check, the Rover SD1, P6B and the Jag XJ's would hammer them in reality both in a straight line and round corners. I've owned them all. As for breakdowns ones the shocking neglect was dealt with (on all of them) I can't say there was much difference. I am also pretty sure the granny was German anyway, the Mk2 certainly was. Fords were old fasioned
@kohoutekcorporation Well said, This is more like it. This comes from days when TV was worth watching, instead of all this so-called reality shite of today. RIP John Thaw and Garfield Morgan.
Lots of the cars chases were filmed in the old gas works around Scots Road in Southall, it was a popular filming location for The Avengers & The Proffesionals as well as many feature films, its now a housing estate
@JuanMacready widely recognised as one of the best dramas british tv has ever produced - still being shown 33 years after the last episode was made!!! says everything really
EXCELLENT...programme, actors in John Thaw and Dennis Waterman(a guy i've always enjoyed watching, in his various roles). What makes this clip even more enjoyable was the Thames TV intro. Fuckin Brilliant post. Thank You. They're on ITV 4 five minutes, can't wait. I was 10 or 11 when the original run was broadcast and i sneakily seen bits n pieces. But mainly i remember the intro when i was told t go t bed LOL.
@merseymain my mum had the biggest crush on John Thaw...we NEVER missed the bloody show cos of that....THANX MUM......my dad wasnt too chuffed, but he still watched it...RIP dad, i love you...xxxx
@racesgirl2000 That's probably because Philip Glenister based his entire character (and very well done too) on Jack Regan of thirty years earlier, a golden era for tv, when real life could be openly portayed warts and all , unlike todays PC climate when everyone nauseatingly pretends things like that no longer happen. Another factor was that there was no whimpy wet soap aspects to the stories, just good hard hitting action all the way through, unlike say "The Bill" soap in uniforms!!
They're remaking it with Ray Winstone as Regan. No casting 4Carter but Tom Hardy, Daniel Craig, Orlando Bloom, Jason Statham, Ewan Magreggor(?) up 4the role.
Nutty how they had a designated driver, probably 'cause they visited the pub whilst on duty. You couldn't be bald back in the 70's, had to work that comb-over or the comb-forward, unless you were the chief.
john thaw looks hard it this. i could take him on later in his career when he played mr tom, or even when he was morse, but in the 70s i dont know. he looks like he could give you a right kick in the face with those slim square shoes, and then rough you up in the cell with a nylon jacket with sharp pointy collars too big for the coat style. then dennis waterman would enter the cell and beat you with a pack of cold fish and chips. poking you with one of those two pronged wooden chip forks.
i remember being at a club in the elephant and castle in 1978 and getting into a fist fight with dennis waterman over a woman. he was a pretty good fighter and after trading a few blows i was thrown out. i had a black eye the next day but i had managed to give him a bit of a pasting before it was broken up.
Great show, currently watching some reruns.I used to sit and watch them with my old Man (Dad)back in the 70s.I can't stand any of these idiotic American Policing series, are there Cops really that thick?I doubt itEspecially that ginger twat who looks sideways at everything, whats that all about ?!The Sweeney had it all, drama, violence, misogny, sex, great acting, comedy,it had the lot."If your Family had a Coat of Arms,it would have crossed Jemmies!"Inspector Jack Reagan.
Every Monday night at 9pm I was there with my Dad watching this brill show. I was popular at school then because the other kids weren't allowed to watch it. Good times. Any one got a time machine?
I love the Thames TV logo and tune just before The Sweeney started... me mum used to let me stay up late (well, it was late in those days..!) to watch it on a thursday night. Awsome theme tune, Awesome series, Beautiful closing theme... Non-stop Brilliance from all involved in the making of this ground-breaking series. The car does still exist, there was an article in Classic Ford about the deal made with Ford to provide the motors for nuffing!! The car is exempt tax.
i remember the nissan almera advert (about 1996 ish) it was a spoof of the sweeney, and regan went to a burger van to buy a cup of tea, but it was disgusting and he said "I COULD NICK YOU FOR THIS".....hehe.
someone commented that the gold consul GT (NHK 295M) was still around, i checked on the DVLA website and it hasnt been taxed since 01-11-1989, although it maybe still around, but i doubt it, the car was registered on 11-04-1974 and was still recorded as being bronze the last time it was taxed!
Nah, won't happen. Ray Winston is a good actor, loved him on the "Robin of Sherewood series" but appearently there's no money and - understandably - they are afraid it's going to flop.
oh thank you jolf1245, youve made my day with this news. i also like ray winston when hes not advertising paddy power or cornflakes, but id hate to see a film version of this classic.
The best opening credit, I have ever seen. I don't know what happened to the film? There were supposed to make a film about Sweeney. When is it gonna come to cinema?
Time was they were called the police force, and they were a force to be reckoned with. Now they're the police service because the bureaucrats thought 'force' sounded too threatening. Politics and bureaucracy have turned a once powerful police force into a joke.
Best British Police show ever! Hard hitting, gritty, violent, humourous, great cast, superb scripts. 'The Sweeney,' set a Gold Standard that has never been surpassed. Proper old school blokes, no hint of political correct BS, no female bosses-purely eye candy & potential shag material (like in real life-only we have to pretend otherwise officially!) no soppy blokes with a feminine side, or over reliance on hair products! No mincey FWD cars, in short, when the Police could POLICE PROPERLY.....
Great, gritty British drama. It got better with each season. John Thaw's cynical beaten down by the system Maverick Reagen was incredible!

winchmeet 2 years ago
Don't the real cops do this now? So what're you complaining about?
kingrocker44 2 years ago
It's called sarcasm. You should try it sometime ;-)
Of course they do this now but The Sweeney portrays how they are far more realistically than current shows.

I WAS being sarcastic.

Next year apparently with Ray Winston playing Regan.Shut it !!!
sunderlandgent 2 years ago
Nah, won't happen. Ray Winston is a good actor, loved him on the "Robin of Sherewood series" but appearently there's no money and - understandably - they are afraid it's going to flop.
jolf1245 2 years ago
oh thank you jolf1245, youve made my day with this news. i also like ray winston when hes not advertising paddy power or cornflakes, but id hate to see a film version of this classic.

The best opening credit, I have ever seen. I don't know what happened to the film? There were supposed to make a film about Sweeney. When is it gonna come to cinema?

Indeed, even when criminals were afraid to watch the tellybox, as it told them what was coming.
Coppers nowdays need to be a good bit 1970's mentality - Plain and straight to the point. At least you knew where you stood then, not like now...
strontiumdog19 2 years ago
Time was they were called the police force, and they were a force to be reckoned with. Now they're the police service because the bureaucrats thought 'force' sounded too threatening. Politics and bureaucracy have turned a once powerful police force into a joke.
LDG10k 2 years ago 6
Your spot on, and I am a police officer we're not allowed to do anything to criminals, its crap.

"24 Horas al Día". Así la renombró TVE cuando la emitió en los 70s.
Nó éramos muchos los que la veíamos entonces. Y nunca se ha repuesto despues. Me pregunto cuánta gente la recordará hoy día....
