@giocentriq That's impossible, if Weird Al covered this in 1973. (This cover, recorded when he was a child, was his first ever Demento submission - it was never played, and promptly thrown out!)
ok this is fucking disturbing and that is why i love it also i have seen the forbidden zone and i love that too. WOOOOOOO kudos to this person for making the video!!!!!!
Greatest Dr. Demento song ever, and there were lots! Love this song. But having been to the La Brea Tarpits many times, they're not near Pico & Sepulveda.... WTH?
The song alludes to the street names that non-Southern Californians have trouble pronouncing... like Pico (mispronounced Pick-o), Sepulveda (Sepple-VE-da), Doheny (Do-HENN-ee), Cahuenga (kah-hoo-EEN-ga), etc. The "Tar Pits" was added on to "La Brea" just for the fun of it. :-)
Felix Figueroa and His Orchestra is the artist on the label. Dr. Demento said tonight that it was a collaboration between bandleader Freddie Martin and songwriter Jule Styne. Yes, the video is very clever and creative!
I hate to correct the Good Doctor, but it was actually Eddie Maxwell who co-wrote it with Jule Styne. Eddie wrote the captivating music and Jule wrote the clever lyrics. Also, "Freddie Martin" was the name that Felix Figueroa later used professionally.
I've had this stuck in my head since the first time I heard it on Dr. Demento in the mid 80s. Thanks! Here's to another 20 years of it stuck in my head!
Great job! You put a lot of work in this, and it came out wonderfully. I have loved this little known song for years, and you really did it justice with your very creative video.
This seems to be the only copy of the song on line, and it comes with a cute animation (despite dinosaurs being as inappropriate as they were in The Flintstones -- but what the heck).
Love this. Miss those sunday nights! Thanks for posting ....

"La Brea" in Spanish means "the tar," so the La Brea Tar Pits means literally, "The 'The Tar' Tar Pits."

Being an Angelino, I commend you for creating footage that does the song more than justice.
