  • Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune were originally on KCOP 13 in Los Angeles, where WoF announcer Charlie O'Donnell (except he wasn't the show's announcer at the time) was a news anchor. At least they still have both shows on WDIV in Detroit. (If ABC still owned WXYZ, they probably would have moved the shows there from WDIV had it been part of a deal on the part of ABC for its stations it owns and operates.)

  • Keep in mind that Jeopardy hadn't yet caught on & this was before Jeopardy & Wheel Of Fortune were shown as a package deal on all the affiliate stations.

  • 0:01-0:02: excuseyou77 has the winners circle video of Markie Post and the contestant winning $25,000.

  • watch?v=KQ7vR9U5Pt8

  • No room for "Press Your Luck" at the time.

  • That 1984-1985 set was beautiful.

  • It really was. :)

  • "Jeopardy!" without Art Fleming? Surely you jest. Such a program will never take off.

  • Nice vid, but I do not recall where the syndicated Wheel of Fortune was on that schedule. I learned from another YouTube poster that WoF and J! had been on Channel 7 since their respective '83 and '84 debuts but aired during the day before moving to the evening in 1987.

If anyone could tell me what time WoF aired on WNEV in those days, it would be appreciated.

  • OH MAH GAH! The Jeopardy! pilot!

  • This is from September 1983.

  • Alex Trebek's Jeopardy! didn't premiere until 1984, though...

  • This is really neat! And it's a treat because they showed the pilot episode of Jeopardy! in the promo too.

  • I remember a similar ad on WNEV that promoted four other game shows. The All-New "Let's Make a Deal" with Monty Hall, "Match Game" with Gene Rayburn, The New "$100,000 Name That Tune" with Jim Lange, and "Wheel of Fortune" with, of course, Pat Sajak and Vanna White. Near the end of THAT promo, Sajak said, "Now that's what I call a Winning Line-Up!" If you remember too, Feel Good About THAT!!!

  • Did WNEV air the CBS afternoon soap lineup? "The Young & The Restless" at 12:30pm, "As the World Turns" at 1:30pm, "Capitol" at 2:30pm and "Guiding Light" at 3pm. Did they also air Card Sharks at 10:30 (eastern time) in the morning?

  • Yes, as far back the WNEV years (which began May 1982, the successor to WNAC 7) the station ran the complete soap and gameshow lineup, but would sometimes preempt shows in moderation. For example, circa 1990, they delayed CBS This Morning by an hour to air a children's show called Ready to Go. Once the CBS affiliation went to WBZ 4 in '95, we no longer saw GL at 3pm (they moved it to 10am, then 9).

  • Even when WNEV was WNAC, they ran the soaps - the only one I remember them dumping was Search For Tomorrow for about six months in the late 70s, before a letter writing campaign brought it back.

Jeopardy didn't last long in the morning - WNEV moved it to early afternoons shortly after it premiered. Wheel of Fortune soon moved to the evenings, and Jeopardy soon joined it. The Match Game episodes they were airing at this point were reruns.

  • They were indeed...also, during their days as WNAC, they also pre-empted Whew, though it did air in nearby Providence, RI.

  • I remember reading that too...Alex mentioned that he went to look for the show at 3 pm, but found "Quincy" reruns instead.

  • Not all stations treated it so shabbily...for starters, both Cleveland and Detroit carried it during the primo 7-8 PM hour (can't remember if it was 7 or 7:30) from the get-go.

Also, those J! clips were from the pilot (the 2nd one, since the 1st used a set that had much more in common w/the short-lived 78 revival, right down to the old-style gameboard).

  • "Weekdays, Followed by 'Morning/Live',

    on Channel SE7EN!"

    "Join the fun!

    Tomorrow morning at nine!!!"

  • 'Morning/Live' I think was a local show, if i'm not mistaken? All I recall from this era was Look, which was renamed New England Afternoon a year or so later.

  • I remember them, Wonder whatever became of Susan Sikora since "Morning/Live." FYI, Bill O'Reilly hosted New England Afternoon.

  • And I think also that the bridge from Christine McVie's "Got a Hold On Me" was used for "Morning/Live's" theme song.

  • How long was Morning/Live? If it was an hour, that's bad news for Press Your Luck.

  • KGO, like KABC and WABC, put Jeopardy on at 7 PM and Wheel of Fortune followed at 7:30 PM.

  • Yeah, but some stations air Jeopardy! on in the afternoons. Take for instace WLS-TV Chicago. They air Inside Edition at 3 PM, Jeopardy! at 3:30 PM then their news at 4, 5 World News Tonight at 5:30, 6 PM then Wheel at 6:30 PM. KHOU also follows this practice too. Some stations also air the pair on different stations like WFAA-TV Dallas J! is at 3:30 PM then WoF is at 6:30 PM on KTVT. So it really varies.

  • Well, WFAA doesn't air it anymore. And they had it originally on at 3 PM and then moved it to 3:30. When they moved it to KTVT, they originally had it at 4:30 PM but have since moved it to 11 AM (their midday newscast flopped).

  • When did J! move to KTVT in Dallas and why so early?

  • Not to be slightly O-T but in NYC, Jeopardy was on at 2:00AM on NBC 4. The ABC-owned stations, including channel 7 in NYC, got the rights to the show, eventually going to 7:00PM...the rest is history.

  • When did WABC start moving J! to 7 PM becaus when I lived in the Bay area from 1984-1991 KRON-TV aired Jeopardy! at 4:30 PM before moving to 7:30 PM before KGO acquired it in January 1992 after KRON went to early prime.

  • Some of the "Jeopardy!" clips were taken from the 2nd pilot for the current version.
