I just got a knew compressor that go's up to 350 psi I got a pease of rod poot a point on it got a a half inch tube shot it at an old car throe one door and out the uthere side it's so much fun
You could probably get that tank up to 300psi. Take a look at my latest video. My cannon is made of a grill propane tank and a 3 inch pvc pipe. It shoots pepsi bottles 1/4 mile on only 150psi. I am making a stronger one right now, though I don't know why lol! Looking at the land around YOUR house, you could probably hit the side of that mountain if you upgraded your cannon a little bit.
the cinder block you shot at is probably only 1.5 or 2 inches thick and also cinder blocks are soft compared to other bricks so it doesn't require much energy to break. I made an air cannon that can blow a 4 inch thick brick twice the size of the one you used to hundreds of pieces, it can also shoot a water bottle straight up in the air so high it goes out of sight.
I will post a video of it soon, you should check it out maybe you will get some ideas.
Great job! Myself and some coworkers made these for a corncob chucking contest a few years back, great fun. Just remember that having a bigger tank will not yield any higher power, only more consistent pressure release. The power of the cannon is limited by air pressure, the minimum ID of the plumbing, and how fast you can open the valve. Great soundtrack BTW! Nice work!
that has quite a air chamber. too bad you used a ballvalve. you should have used a quicker opening valve or at least attached a wooden plank to the ball valve to increase leverage.
@Australiaroo That is the real trick to these cannons, they are limited by how fast you can open the valve, or how far you get the valve open before the projectile leaves the barrel. You can't really use a butterfly valve because they will bleed the pressure from the tank. The only other types of valves you can really use are solenoid/piloted air valves, or a mechanical system to open the ball valve.
@ab48726 to which the extent you are elaborating i am assuming you are an educated person in spudding in which i question because using a piston valve doesnt leak if you build correctly
@Australiaroo LOL, not educated, only mildly experienced. But I have done a bit of research and put some thought into the processes involved, aside from building one of my own. I'm not quite sure what you mean by a piston valve, I don't think I've seen one of those before. Can you explain how they operate?
@ab48726 a piston valve is a valve that you create that functions as air pressure is inserted into the cannon, a piston with a sealing face is slid forward and seals the barrel. to activate and therefore shoot the cannon, a small amount of air is let out behind the piston via blowgun or ball valve which creates a vacuum and sucks the piston back, hence exposing the barrel. now the compressed air leaves the air chamber and out the barrel. Piston valves result in accurate and powerful cannons
@regolithe if that was 100 to 120 psi how could the ball valve hold that much? because i have a half inch ball valve and it holds...well i don't really know. never mind.
i doubt this is true but next video u make lift up the block to show it isnt prebroken cuz u dont want negative comments. but i know that power did break that..... and if it was frozen could have went though a fence.... then a house..... then back into the frezzer.... lolz
If you're really concerned about failure go Sch 40 steel. Sch 80 if you wanna go nuts. Pressures listed are often max failure rate, so standard sch 40 pvc is good to around 500psi AIR OR WATER. Normal compressors top out at 150, so ya're fine. A decent ($15) ball valve is good to 400-500 psi too.
Just as a safety measure, I'd wrap the whole thing with rope and duct tape, just in case. Murphy's law being what it is and all. I had a regular combustion potato gun blow up on me using hairspray and it took half my hand with it, left a contusion the size of a football on my leg, and they pulled 22 pieces of shrapnel from my leg and arm. That was just hairspray. The projectile decided not to move that time and BOOM. Just be careful, that's all I'm saying, and have fun!
It's actually quite possible, seeing that PVC shatters when it explodes, and the shards would go considerably fast as the burst pressure is over 500psi... Just saying.
PVC is designed to hold liquids under pressure, not air. Also, PVC is designed to be used underground. There is a big difference between water under pressure and air under pressure. That pressure rating is for liquids, PVC is not intended for air.
You're right that the same pressure is exerted, but the hazard is how it acts if it fails. With pressurized water, if the pipe fails the pipe bursts and the water pours out. With pressurized air, if the pipe fails it violently ruptures and PVC shards go flying and its just not a good situation to be in. PVC is not designed to flex a lot (like with sudden decompression) and every time it happens the pipe is weakened. It can fail the first time or the thousandth time. It's just dangerous.
a piece of paper could hold 100000psi if it was thick enuff , i beleive pvc could hold 500psi if it was thick enuff to , but this pvc in the video would hold 200
The PVC is after the ball valve, all pipes before it are metal, which means the PVC not actually holding pressure for very long unless you block the barrel up. Also i have a PVC air cannon that will hold 200 PSI... "DUHHHH"
I just made a massive air cannon that has a two inch ball valve. I can shoot golf balls and ice slugs and super balls, but tennis balls and Water bottles would be awesome, three inches is too big...
I'm guessing there's a two and a half inch to two inch reducer?
That is totaly unessisary, there is a certain size the air tank needs to be to match the barrel. That thing you got is to big, you cant move it aroud easly. 200 psi with a smaller tank can match what you have. As long as it can push the projectile with 120 psi till it leaves the barrel it would be just as good.
I didn't build this like an engineer. I built it based on the resources that were available to me. would a tank half that size been better? Yes. did i have access to one? um... no.
good job but i'm not sure use the gas bomb that fucking dangers lol !!!! its realty good you can normaly break the house with more shots but still use the gas bomb damn
have you guys thought about using a solenoid valve? like the ones for backyard sprinklers? you can wire it up to a AC - DC adaptor like a phone charger and it dumps all the air out at once....
I built an air cannon with exactly that setup, the valves are good up to about 150 psi, idk how much you're running, but it definitely beats the shit out of a ball valve. The valve is completely open before the projectile even moves, you can feel it open before you feel the recoil haha. Give it a try! ill pm you pics if you want.
So if you don't like your neighbors...Oh, a tennis ball broke your window? Sorry to hear that, must've been those kids across the street. I saw them playing tennis before...
ever try a baseball!?! or you can fill that bottle full of concrete.......that thing can blow away any millitary gun under the cannons.......BTW.......thats mach1 at 550 mph
How long is your pvc? I made a short one at 35 inches long and it cost me 18 bucks after the grill igniter. A bit of hair spray and it will shoot 400 or so feet in the air easy. Get yourself a small gps and shoot it out covered in a sock and see how far it goes. It will also show speed.
This was at about 75 psi. I did a shot once at 120. Never saw the tennis ball again. I don't know anything about ratios, but I know what happens when you put a lot of pressure beind a ball valve and let it go suddenly.
Long range video would be damn near impossible. I shot a wter bottle straight up once, and it was in the air for over twenty seconds. If anyone could calculate how high it went, I would be appreciative.

actually 1.5:1 is combustion usually 1:1 works well

0.8:1 is the perfect ratio for a spray and prey combustion. Anything over that you are just creating unnecsary friction thus a lower muzzle velocity.
